for those that know me i was a involved with a l bookie at the stow
there was four books
mcb, bunny, billy grimes and dougie tyler
each bookie took a turn each to put up the first show
IF billy grimes and dougie tyler genuine first show went out to the off course bookies
the stow would have lost the BAGS via off course gambles
it was the punters taking the prices before they got to the shops
ie
dougie or billy grimes would go up 4/1 trap one
and it would get smashed by the on on course punters
1st show in shops  2/1
so basically it was the on course punters policing the markets unwittlingly
helping the off course bookies
now there are no punters on course, mistakes or inaccurate prices go out as 1st show
Pause Switch to Standard View on course prices and off course...

They certainly have enough % on their side at SP, let alone the first cautious opening shows.
I guess they figure the "mug" money far and away covers the shrewdies.

Do any off course firms still take bets on bags with instructions on slip to take the first show.

starship, you should be done under the trade descriptions act for calling billy grimes a bookmaker

why the fk should he be done under the trade descriptions act for saying that?

Billy Grimes was a bookmaker at the dogs for 40+ years.

there were plenty that came and went in that time.

Starship.. you know that you and your sidekicks want everything your own way when you are playing.. nothing wrong with that, that's how it should be.. but Its ranks of hypocrisy when you preach how things should be done.. Perhaps if we left everything to you, the world would be a better place.

All good thanks.

He's getting on a bit now and he's really struggling
with his minces. but he still manages to get to the shops to get some sports
bets on.

Hope you are ok?

Billy Grimes is a real character. I worked for my dad and recall he would lay the bet even it it werent in the odd to pay out !
Back in the day of the 1% deductions i remember calling a 900/200 with him.  When i went to draw, without batting an eyelid he said, "Give me £11 and i owe you £900 !  GOOD DAYS
