No they didn't.   If you believe the post, it's due to the moody betting shows from the track.

Fears grow over future of Oxford greyhound track

Saturday 3rd November 2012 in Oxford By Freddie Whittaker, http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk covering Politics and Kidlington. Call me on 01865 425498

FEARS for the future of the Oxford Stadium are growing after a key greyhound race meeting was axed.

Campaigners said that the loss of Friday morning meetings at the stadium, which is between Blackbird Leys and Cowley, would jeopardise its future as a greyhound track.

The move comes after developer Galliard Homes unveiled plans earlier this year to build more than 200 homes on the site.

Opponents of the housing proposals say the loss of the race meetings could weaken arguments that the stadium should stay open.

BAGS racing (Bookmakers’ Afternoon Greyhound Service) was established at Oxford and other stadiums by bookmakers in 1967 so that punters could place bets in the daytime.

The Greyhound Racing Association, which owns the stadium, has not explained the reasons behind the decision to switch the meetings to a track in Yorkshire.

BAGS said it was a “business decision”.

Blackbird Leys Parish Council chairman Gordon Roper said he was worried the loss of the event would make the stadium less viable in its current form.

He said: “As far as I know it was fairly popular, and if it’s gone then less people are going to go up there.

“But this could be the thin end of the wedge, it could be the go-karts next, then the racing will be down to two nights a week.

“The parish council still opposes the development of the site. I understand people need homes, but this needs to stay as a leisure facility.”

If a planning bid is submitted, councillors will have to look at the viability of the stadium as a business before making any decision.

Residents of Blackbird Leys have raised concerns in the past that development of the site would put extra strain on the area’s road and schools network.

Oxford East MP Andrew Smith, who lives in Blackbird Leys, recently sent out a survey to 2,340 households seeking their views on the proposals for 225 homes.

He had responses from 273 homes, and the majority of those, 188, were against developing the stadium.

Mr Smith said answers were needed on the reasons for the withdrawal of the BAGS meeting.

He said: “Moving this meeting is a blow for the stadium.

“The GRA and BAGS should answer questions about why this has happened.”

BAGS meets happen at 18 stadiums nationwide and are run by the BAGS organisation, which is not-for-profit and based in London.

BAGS has confirmed that Tuesday daytime races would continue at the stadium.

The Oxford Mail contacted Galliard Homes and the Greyhound Racing Association for comment, but received no response

COMMENT: Time to come clean

Saturday 3rd November 2012 in News

DISQUIET continues to grow about the future of Oxford Stadium.

The stadium, which faces the prospect of closure with houses built on the site, has suffered a body blow with the decision by the Bookmakers Afternoon Greyhouse Service to move its Friday morning meet to Yorkshire.

The fear is that the stadium is dying a death from 1,000 cuts and will reach the point where its lack of viability means housing is an inevitability.

The Greyhound Association failed to return calls from the Oxford Mail yesterday, but we will not be going away.

Until, that is, the association finally levels with local people about its intentions for this site.

GREYHOUNDS: Withdrawal of BAGS is kick in teeth for stadium

11:00am Saturday 3rd November 2012 in Oxford By John Gaisford   http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk

The withdrawal of the Friday morning BAGS meeting will be like a knife through the heart of all the people fighting to save Oxford Stadium from houses being built on the site.

What more incentive is there for Oxford City Council now not to accept the planning application from Galliard Homes?

The loss of almost £500,000 in income from the BAGS contract is a real killer.

A crumb of comfort though is that before the introduction of the extra Friday BAGS meeting, the company was making a profit as it had done for the previous 20 years, I am told.

Everyone connected with the stadium, which has been providing entertainment since 1938 – owners, trainers, staff, bookmakers, public and the suppliers will all be left on a knife-edge as the time approaches for the application to be submitted.

Like everyone, BAGS did not want to be left out in the cold if everything went belly-up for the stadium over the next year, and ensure they had the facilities to complete their annual programme for the betting shops.

Greyhound Racing Association boss Clive Feltham described the decision as a ‘bombshell’, turning Oxford into a loss-making company. Why then did the GRA tell the council earlier this year that the stadium was not making money?

In addition, the site has become much less appealing as a going concern and could well put off potential buyers.

The best thing that could possibly happen is the Irish Government agency NAMA calls in a loan worth almost £50m, and puts the GRA into receivership and the stadium is then sold to the highest bidder.

Racing manager Gary Bai-den admits the racing office and the rest of the staff are very uneasy over the future.

“I don’t blame BAGS for taking the steps they have, it’s purely a business decision,” he said.

“But we must hope that some good housekeeping during the next few difficult months will help us to win the day.

“Friday night racing has the potential to be better than it is, so let’s hope we get plenty of support through the turnstiles.”

If its due to MOODY shows, as is suggested by some more ill-informed people, why have they still got Sunday bags ?

Think you'll find the greedy piss takers were only standing up on Friday's although don't know why they couldn't just get rid of them

Personally I think you talk with a few sour grapes in your mouth Go Racing, we all know the real reason, so it's no good everyone starting to blame different parties at the track. It has been a well thought out plan to slowly wind the track down. They would not be giving the track 2 months notice that Fridays are going if they were that concerned. They would just have took them away overnight !!
Report go racing November 4, 2012 1:05 PM GMT
...not at all, Sittingbourne nearly went for the same reason. We can ill afford to put anymore tracks at risk of losing the life saving bags contract just because a few need inflated prices to win at the game.

Johnny Muls, small independent bookmaker over here started calling in for anything over 20 euros on a dog there.
I know the unders are profitable but anyone know why?

and a person called Edgar replied

"when you have a group of seven or eight people including very influencial people at any track you will have a problem and that is certainly the case there!. If the truth ever comes out then a lot of people will get the sack and overall it would be a better place for it. Question: How does a trainer who has been banned from Oxford before get a contract back there and another trainer who speaks the truth to the powers that be is suddenly suspended for being upfront and honest about the situation!!!. Mind you if you are a small independent bookmaker anywhere taking large bets on graded dog racing then you only have yourself to blame!!!!"

agree with go racing, the "judges" as paul lawrence so smugly described them on rpgtv are nothing but parasites taking advantage of the cheating by the books at the track,we all know that, the soft ****s who actually think they are good at the game as a result of their parasitic earnings from the place are just as bad as the books, yet they are the first to whinge about closed accounts etc.

These "judges" couldnt dream of earning a living of a straight book.
Report starship November 5, 2012 6:13 PM GMT
standing up as a bookie at a BAGS MEETING and you make trap three in the first a 6/4 shot
not a punter in sight
trap three wins, what does the bookie win, nothing, he has not taken a bet
he has got race bang right and what has he got, nothing
the hours doing the dvds and the form, for what?
so he thinks to himself
next time i will go up 3/1 and punt it outside and earn my self a few quid
remember 3/1 is only his opinion
the selection still has to win
the off course bookies are the parasites,
they want the on course bookie to get the prices right
so that they can make money

for bags meetings, the big firms should stand and price up then only got themselves to blame, and maybe they will have to pay proper money and hire people who have a degree in dog racing not in ancient art

after all you only get out of something what from the effort you put in

You would'nt believe that two countries so close to each other could be run so differently....... essentially one of them is run by PC politicians, gravy slurpers, following the do-gooders policies the other meanwhile is hell bent on protecting its tradition, history, culture etc probrably at the second worst time in its economic history.

Excitement Expressed as Clonmel and Youghal Stadia Works Take Shape

Two major IGB Capital Development projects are quickly taking shape, and are set to drive the Greyhound Industry in Youghal and Clonmel hinterlands for decades to come. This comes on the back of a promised investment of just under €2.5 million for 2012 by the IGB in various facilities and equipment countrywide. Excitement was expressed by the General Managers of their respective building projects, as they currently oversse the first major investment in their venues for many years. Earlier this year, the IGB announced a contribution of €1million towards a brand new modern public stand for the Clonmel Stadium, as well as a €100,000 contribution towards a complete refit and refurbishment of the stand in Youghal. On top of these spends the IGB also are making a contribution of almost €1million to Dundalk this year.

Development work in Clonmel is well on schedule according to manager Eddie Anderson. Steelwork erection on the new stand which will have a ground floor concourse capacity for 350 people along with a new bar and Tote facilities. The completely new stand will also boast a brand new restaurant which will seat 112 people and the completion date is set for early next year on the 13th of January,  just in time for the Clonmel Festival. "This is the first bit of development here at our famous venue since approximately the 1950's and we hope to have the official grand opening sometime after the Clonmel Festival when we will have a great celebration for all the greyhound public from the area as well as for the town of Clonmel", said Eddie Anderson.

I'd agree with Czechbet there eyeball the prices are "most "only someones opinion and for the most part are not particularly clever", they make mistakes here just like they do over there. OK agree there is a difference between a 130% book and a 150/160% book, buut the facilities make up for that Laugh
