Following his hugely encouraging trial run at Shelbourne on Saturday night, Milldean Panther is now definitely being aimed for the **** International at Dundalk on Thursday week.

The dog has been booked in for a trial over the track this Friday and his Oaks winning kennel companion Milldean Tally will also be trialled.

Panther’s presence in the race will certainly boost the attendance on the night as enthusiasts will want to see the Derby favourite in action in his pre-classic outing.

However, there has as yet been no success in the search for a worthy British challenger for the richest one-off race in this part of the world.

English Derby winner Blonde Snapper has been retired while finalist Coolavanny Bart sustained a likely career-ending injury at Sunderland on Saturday night. Connections of last year’s English Derby winner Taylors Sky and this year’s finalist Farloe Ironman have declined their invitations and other leading contenders have been ruled out to the clash with the William Hill Festival at Sunderland. The finals night of the Festival is also Thursday week.

One possible British runner is Paul Young’s Bubbly Phoenix which contested the **** Race of Champions last Saturday at Tralee but a definite answer is not expected until today.

Apart from Milldean Panther the only confirmed runner is Razldazl George but among the entries are Betfair 600 dual winner Kingo, recent Oaks winner Milldean Tally, **** NI Derby winner Captain Scolari and Cox Cup winner Quail Hollow.

Plenty of interest from across the sea i see Plain no shock seen as the prize money is only a pitiful €20,000 to the winner, €6,000 to 2nd, €3,500 to 3rd and €2,500 to the 4th, 5th and 6th for 1 run Plain

Report Swayne July 3, 2012 2:34 PM BST
agree incredible, but perhaps not surprising. also cos' the Irish want a UK component by putting your dog forward in forthright manner you might stand a chance of being accepted with your dog perhaps not being absolutely top class, and chance of big payday as PF says for one race, and at very least easily covers costs and have excitng and maybe unrepeatable day for owners.
Report woodmanchester July 3, 2012 3:42 PM BST
Dont think the English got anything else good enough. Think we nearly totally depending on Lister and Draper for our top dogs and they dont like making the journey, dont blame them really. We got some very smart youngsters coming through, but struggling for the International. No disrespect, but the likes of Sawpit Sensation, been over before, Westmead Adonis, Derby finalist, would probably just be making up the numbers, if they went over. Dont know the current status of all dogs but if fit, would Farloe Ironman be possible? And, i'd like to see Slick Santiago have a crack if at his peak

Report p_r_e_m_i_e_r__f_a_n_t_a_s_y July 3, 2012 4:10 PM BST
He wouldn't have done enough to get an invite i'd say but his owner/trainer should drop some hints, as Swayne has said it's supposed to be an International so you never know.

I don't know how much the travel costs to come over and i'm sure if a dog got an invite the trainer would want to bring them for a trial first but surely it would not cost more than 2,500 which you're guaranteed back.
Report patrick starr July 3, 2012 4:13 PM BST
Yeh,he occured as owner has already proven willing to travel, also,he equalled Blonde Dino's track record at perry barr, the last Uk winner(runner even?)

Nambisco ran in it last year.
Westmead Bolt the year before but i think he was based with Fraser at the time.
Ballymac Ruso and Kinda Ready the year before that.
Blonde Dino won the year before that, Romeo Maldini also ran that year.

With the constant complaint about prize money you'd think anybody getting an invite with a fit dog would jump at the opportunity.

Razldazl George will get in as Derby Champion, Milldean Panther will get in, Barefoot Allstar will get in as Scottish Derby Champion (if let take his place), after that i don't know. Maybe Kingo (Betfair 600 winner) and Milldean Tally (Oaks winner).

Don't think Sparta Maestro (Puppy Derby winner) or Tyrur Big Mike (Easter Cup winner) will go for it so no idea who the 6th would be, maybe Piercestown Sand (Gold Cup winner).

Report woodmanchester July 3, 2012 8:20 PM BST
Dont think youngssters like Alien Planet really cut out for International duty. But, yeah, been wondering whats happened to Piercestown Sand. English might have had a contender or two if the race wasnt at the same time as the Classic. An unlucky but sound semi elimination there could be a possible if its one of the classy runners? Report Swayne July 6, 2012 2:22 PM BST
RP today says €2.5k entry, refers to €17.5k net to the winner. Clearly money is good whichever way you look at it, but for any UK the prestige/pride of being associated/in the race is what would make it for me, even if cost a fair lump, which it doesn't if you get accepted. If I had a dog good enough/near good enough, I'd start a website promoting it to get in!!!

I know that's what i said in the first line, if i was given free reign and all the dogs where available and no UK raiders where interested that's who i would have offered places too. Subway Ruth may not be the fastest but i feel those 2 wins, 1 a classic should have been enough to get her a place.

I would have gone for the big comp winners so that's why i didn't have Milldean Panther in the 6, nothing to do with his ability obviously.

Sure no matter who got in they is always going to be somebody not happy, sure look at all the furore over the selections for the Select Stakes in England.

He looks about the right price to me on his running this year, nice draw though, Tally was double the price i had her in at so it's a no brainer. I think on everything i've seen this year she has the leading off George around the bend (although it's a short run up) and we know she can lead Millie around. If she goes around in front it would take some run to beat her as she will be even better at 550y than 525y in my opinion.

Sponsors **** quoted Milldean Tally as a 12-1 outsider immediately after the draw was made on Monday morning but they have had a huge response and have had to cut the Oaks winner to 10-1, then 8-1 and now 6-1.

Meanwhile Milldean Panther has eased from 6-4 out to 7-4 and Quail Hollow’s price has also contracted from 5-1 into 9-2.

****’ spokesman Leon Blanche said: “We have had a lot of support for Milldean Tally. In contrast we can’t give away Razldazl George while there is nothing for Milldean Panther but there is good interest in Quail Hollow.

They now bet: 7-4 Milldean Panther; 4 Razldazl George, Kingo; 9-2 Quail Hollow; 6 Milldean Tally; 9 Cabra Millie.
