what age pup theres a guy selling some on flappersdream website by bandicoot tapoki for 400 quid but there 12 weeks old
Report maggotno1 June 12, 2012 6:37 PM BST
buying a pup at 12 weeks is ok if you have the time to wait and the money to rear it.
Report mesi June 12, 2012 6:46 PM BST
i always think thats the best time, the waiting and dreaming Happy
Report patrick starr June 12, 2012 7:01 PM BST
had never done it personally before mesi but get what you mean now.

have spent another great afternoon getting jumped on,chased, licked, hit by wagging tails by the two i bought at 12 wks,the watching them and dreaming bit whilst they are already giving you so much fun means for me its the best value you can get if buying a dog.
Report hectoratoratora June 12, 2012 8:32 PM BST
Jade when buying a pup its not principally about how much you spend or how its bred. Its nearly all about the quality of rearing the  pup gets.Find a proven top class rearer with a good recent record and buy off them .If you dont  get that right it will likely end in dissappointment
Report the.mad.dog.man June 12, 2012 9:11 PM BST
buying a pup is for mugs will cost you thousands before it even in a race and it might be useless save your money
Report patrick starr June 12, 2012 9:23 PM BST
mdm,i paid £750 per pup and its £80 a mth rearing so circa £2500 before they actually go in a race, its not cheap but i dont think its that bad tbh.

if you count the cost of buying a pup at 12 weeks and the rearing ud get a decent dog at any sales with winning form and ready to race.iv been breeding pups for 25 years and every year it gets more expensive.as said above the wait and the money spent on rearing come race nite might be money down the drain.have a look on data some good young dog on it.
Report patrick starr June 12, 2012 9:48 PM BST
deffo mate, will look them up on data later Happy

what you think of breeding on mine, did you like faith on track?
Report maggotno1 June 12, 2012 9:54 PM BST
seems a good staying bitch, good stud dog,so youll have every chance.all you need is a bit of luck.

Yeah she was a lovely bitch, beat some right good dogs over 6 bends. Bit of luck she passes some of her talent on now
Report dunlaying June 13, 2012 10:01 AM BST
They are not guaranteed to chase.
We had two pups from a litter of 4.About 1972.
Houghton Gyp ,a steady winner of provincial opens was one of them
Houghton Tour ,Derby favourite and Anglo-Irish winner was another,
the two we bought ,and we had the pick, did not chase.
They had the speed ,one was beaten in a photo in a Southall open with his head to one side playing.Heartbreaking.
From memory we paid £170 for the pair and then had over a year of rearing to pay for.
Newdown Heather-Patricia's Star, bred by Barbara Tompkins who trained John Silver to win the Derby.

P starr live that bitch u got a pup from shame what happened at crayford!
won't the pup need 10 bends !Wink
All the best !
Report patrick starr June 13, 2012 10:31 AM BST
cheers fatty, yes the thinking was they had to stay as if they werent open class at least they could have a full graded career around swindon, again assuming they do actually make it to the track one day!

Just had a look at leaf also pf,very nice Happy

Thats always gonna be the big worry dunlaying, they have so many tests to pass before they actually go into traps for a race.
Report p_r_e_m_i_e_r__f_a_n_t_a_s_y June 13, 2012 10:48 AM BST
I wasn't on the lookout for any at the moment to be honest but the opportunity came along so went for it. I really like the Maybe Baby line which swayed it for me.
Report playthegameboy June 13, 2012 12:10 PM BST
I'm in a syndicate and we went down the pup route a couple of times but never again! Too many things can go wrong. I think you're better off buying something that's run a few times and preferably won a race (especially if it's won at a slow track)
Report GANT007 June 13, 2012 2:00 PM BST
PF.........Best of luck with the pup.......Great damline.......Where are you getting him reared if you don't mind me asking.......Skips dogs are always well reared.
Report GANT007 June 13, 2012 2:04 PM BST
Playthegameboy..........It all depends what grade you want to race at........Most lads will get rid of dogs that can't make A3 in Ireland these will make open racers in the UK in time........Others will get rid of dogs as they have some sort of problem........I prefer the dreamers route as I rear and school by own.
Report p_r_e_m_i_e_r__f_a_n_t_a_s_y June 13, 2012 2:16 PM BST
Noel is rearing him for me Gant
Report playthegameboy June 13, 2012 4:38 PM BST
We just want to have a night out at the track every few weeks and a winner every now and again. That's why I think buying something with a bit of form suits us.  We've bought out of Galway and Harrold's Cross and been really lucky. The 2 pups we bought were useless despite being well bred lol. Hit and miss I suppose. Nothing worse that going down to Youghal on a cold winters morning and see your pride and joy throwing it's head in the air down the back straight and not even doing a qualifying time Shocked Expensive lesson learned Laugh
Report GANT007 June 13, 2012 8:40 PM BST
PF......That gives your pup a great chance to make it.

Playthegameboy.........I know the feeling.....I was schooling a few pups about 3 weeks ago and as I was leaving the schooling track a lad I know was coming in. Out of pure curiosity I went back in for a look. He took out 4 cracking looking dogs just for a handslip. They would have been well reared but they just did not want to follow.
They were nearly 13 months old the poor chap was sick.......The track owner told me since the majority of dodges he has seen of late were all by Hometown Boy......To mention this stud dog is forbidden in greyhound circles.
Report Monsieur Bond June 14, 2012 8:32 PM BST
My pup is 14months old (Droopys Bogart x Blonde Lucy), has had 3 handslips at Westhoughton. Broke his leg at 5months old so still waiting to see if he'll make it to the track. It's cost a lot upto now and he's going to end up a grader at best but I'll be happy for him to make the track. There was a litter of 6 and its the bitches who are unbelievably keen. First time we brought them out of the van and walked into the stadium there was a trial going on.  They heard the hare (couldn't see it) and knew straight away what it was all about. My boys a slow learner in comparison.
Report GANT007 June 16, 2012 1:23 PM BST
At that age bitches would be at least 3 months ahead of dogs maturity wise. I find with bitches they tend to react to other bitches out of pure jealousy.

.....Hi guys..i'm a total novice as i have never owned a dog but i've a few questions if you don't mind.....

.....When you are buying a dog and you have young pups to choose from what should you look for?.....
.....If one of the litter was a loner or quieter may be a better word would that be a negative?.....

.....Or is it all pot luck when they are very young?.....

.....Sorry if some of the questions where silly.....
Report FATTIEWHITEYSLOVEADRINK June 20, 2012 6:49 PM BST
It's all about luck with pups the trainer knows a bit when there 12 months but up to that it's a lucky pin or fav colour or cute looking thing!
Report patrick starr June 20, 2012 7:02 PM BST
Everyone told me the exact same fatty, complete and utter luck with young pups.

What i would say shane,if you have a track in mind to race at,if they grade,to buy a dog whose breeding should suit your track(hence i race at swindon so bought pups to hopefully stay the trip, but wouldnt be what i was looking for were i to race at romford)

I have a soft spot for quiet bitches but have never owned an open class dog so was determined to buy the loudest dog in the litter this time!

I went and seen them, told a mate about them,he wanted in and wanted a bitch, hey presto,we got the best of both worlds, loud, daft as a brush dog, quiet and reserved bitch. lol
Report JayTrumpOldTomDubbl June 20, 2012 8:07 PM BST

As for buying a pup bring your stopwatch and time them up and down the pen Devil and if that fails just buy the one that looks most like the great PF Laugh
