POWERFUL BRITISH CHALLENGE FOR **** RACE OF CHAMPIONS
05/06/2012
Plans for the **** Race of Champions at Tralee have now been finalised and the valuable event will now be run as a 12 dog two-run event on Saturday, June 30th.
Event organiser Liam Lynch yesterday confirmed that all is now in readiness for the big occasion and he also revealed that there will be a powerful British challenge for the €15,000 to the winner feature over 550 yards which will be shown live as part of a telecast from Tralee on Sky Sports.
The quartet of British challengers for the big race are English Derby finalist Coolavanny Bert, which commenced his career at Tralee, impressive Derby final night winner Bubbly Phoenix, Jaytee Pedro and Young Sid. They are four of the best trackers across the water and add massive interest to this occasion.
But there will be a formidable home defence which will include Razldazl Rioga, Ballymac Vic, Broadstrand Lad and Shelbourne Geoff. Rioga began his career in the Juvenile Classic at Tralee and clocked 28.35 in a trial spin around the track last Friday. Ballymac Vic was reared just a few miles form the track and had his early schooling there while there is no need to introduce either Broadstrand or Shelbourne, two of Ireland’s leading trackers.
Entries close today for the Kingdom Supporters’ Club Novice Stake which will have a winner’s prize of €5,000 and a guaranteed bid of €20,000 if the winner manages to break 28.70 during the competition.
The full schedule of races is:
€15,000 **** Race of Champions (12)
€5,000 Kingdom Supporters’ Club Novice Stake (36)
€2,000 Open Bitch 525 (24)
€2,000 Open 500 (24)
€1,000 Open 750 (12)
€1,000 Open 550 (12)
€1,000 A1 570 (24)
€1,000 A2 550 (24)

Great rivalry. Think Phoenix will step up on trial and sound his warning for the Derby. Bert a big player too.

I would have loved to have seen him entered in the ECC Timber instead but can see why connections choose Tralle over Shelbourne.

Dunno. 7/2 Rioga if Phoenix gets held up and same price Pa on that trial run?
Report woodmanchester June 21, 2012 1:17 PM BST
Had a look and after due consideration of his rivals, think Bubbly Phoenix a decent bet at 7/2 now. Droopys Jet's form wasnt up to Phoenix in the Wimbledon Derby and didnt know the event was over 550yds, so reservations about Rioga and Pa getting home. Bally Vic could be the fly in the ointment but would hope Phoenix would step up well on his trial
Report p_r_e_m_i_e_r__f_a_n_t_a_s_y June 21, 2012 5:32 PM BST
I could not back Bubbly Phoenix at that price, will Tralee suit him? He is well drawn in his semi final but even at that i couldn't be tempted. I would have played Power Of God if he didn't have Razldazl Rioga drawn directly outside him which is a worry to me.

Shelbourne Geoff has a great draw with the inside being possibly a mess up to the corner with all that early pace. (Airforce Diva does not run, Pablo Supreme reserve).

I think it's a competition to watch on.

Glad i held fire. 4s Phoenix with Power. Dunno whats a good time at Tralee but bang there on trial form with others, isnt he? Dont think the track will be a problem. Surely can only come on for his trial. Was flying at the end of 480m Monmore, admittedly against a probable short-runner though. However, sure he can keep up a good gallop over 503m, unlike Rioga and Pa, as already mentioned. Strong favourite in my book. Dont think Power of God and Geoff quite up to his class, but that's only my opinion. Think he could almost win by default, but i rate him very highly anyway, a serious tool!

No idea. Think he's a superb all-round middle to wide runner anyway. Doubt very much any of his rivals could win a Derby consolation anyway

Does anybody know if Bubbly Phoenix is staying over here (maybe with Reilly) or travelling back and forward? I persume they would take up the offer off an International place or a Champion Stakes place before the Derby so until September his whole campaign would surely be over here.

Without being rude to those dogs that ran in that race Derby Final night i think almost every single dog in this competition is capable of winning that race.
Report woodmanchester June 21, 2012 7:54 PM BST
Not so sure PF. They could do but i doubt as impressively. True, Boher Paddy and Jaytee Pedro were knocked about but 28.22s on normal going for Phoenix by nearly 8 lengths was some performance

So what's our take on the final?

Razldazl Rioga 3/1
Ballymac Vic 7/1
Droopys Jet 4/1
Power Of God 8/1
Shelbourne Geoff (w) 5/1
Bubbly Phoenix (w) 4/1

Best prices available betting to 105%

I think a few of the runners are decent prices in this.

Razldazl Rioga is just favourite with most firms and has his trap 1 draw. He will again be looking to come away well and build up a big advantage with his brilliant early and middle pace but 550y is as far as he wants to go. It is crucial he leads and while he is well drawn there is big early in the race, 3/1 looks about right i thought.

Droopys Jet is another with good early and he will need to show it here if he is too clear Ballymac Vic and Razldazl Rioga on his inside and Power Of God on his outside will move rails run up. The draw looks tough for Jet to me so he will need his best start but he is priced fairly at 4s.

Ballymac Vic in 2 can start a lot better than he did in the semi finals and if he does the 7/1 could look big. He ran very well i thought when not leading and i think he is a bit too big. The worry is he has big early pace either side of him so really needs to smash out but still the price is on the big side.

I don't fancy Power Of God from 4, he loves the rails and i can't see how he leads those inside him from here.

Bubbly Phoenix has his 6 box here but he has to come away a lot quicker than he did in the semi final and even at that i thought he was close enough out of the 2nd to Power Of God and didn't make that much ground up, he doesn't interest me even at 4/1.

Shelbourne Geoff ran a blinder in the semi finals showing brilliant pace 2 to 3 and staying on well after a good start. I really like his draw here as Power Of God will move left from 4 and he has the beating of Bubbly Phoenix to the corner on semi final evidence. Once leading up Bubbly Phoenix he should turn in a decent position and to get after the pace setter probably Razldazl Rioga and i think he has a massive chance of back running them, he back ran Droopys Jet in the semi final and i'd say he is stronger than Razldazl Rioga over 550y so i feel he could back run either and they look the most likely leaders. I think he is big value at 5/1.

Shelbourne Geoff @ 5/1

Has the 9/2 Bubbly Phoenix gone? Can only see 4/1 on Oddschecker. Phoenix was soon well in arrears and crowded most of the way. With a better break, reckon he should push the fast Razldazl Rioga in the final. Slightly surprised Shelbourne Geoff was a length quicker than Rioga. He did well to pip Droopys Jet, who keeps going

8.10 - Crinkill Cowboy @ 3/1 (Love the draw on the fence for him and think he will lead up the inside and lead around as he should have enough early to hold Heady Days. Usual Story the fav out in 4 could have a tough time getting a run as Homestead Royal in 5 went up well in the semi finals and will move rails as will the bottom. I think the top is a big price and can lead all.)

8.50 - Newlawn Tock @ 5/2 (Good draw and can break a lot better than he did in the semi finals. With a better start he can get the better off Lisnakill Ross this time and lead into the back. Droumeragh Padre will come home well but if Newlawn Tock hits the front i don't see them back running him.)

9.30 - Dear Pa @ 7/2 (Comes away level leads up and leads all. He should have the pace up to clear Kilbarry Rover on his inside and Saleen Bob on his outside doesn't trap that well but has massive pace but i find it hard to see him leading Dear Pa. Paradise Martini needs to fly out from 4 and will have Cashen Mafuma edging in on him and Mafuma will do well to clear Martini unless he walks out. Pablo Supreme could have a decent draw here but really need to come away to get a good position. I think Dear Pa is a huge price.)

10.10 - Shelbourne Geoff @ 5/1 (reasons already posted on the thread.)

I was going to post this too as Spoilsports where supposed to be going these prices but seems they are not now, i'm sure they will say it was a missprint in the RP but their supposed market came to 120% and it looked an almighty rick to me.

9.50 - Newlawn Martini @ 9/2 + Barrack Patsy @ 3/1 [saver] (I struggle to see any other winner. Newlawn Martini has the best draw, flew out in the semis and showed big pace up and will surely get a solo to the corner. If she leads around she will be very tough to beat and the only bitch that can back run her in my opinion is Barack Patsy. Barack Patsy is the fastest in the race and the best bitch i'd say but i'm slightly worried about her draw outside of Crossfield Tina. If she clears her early she is a huge danger to the bottom and the most likely winner but she will have a job to do so.)

Of those dogs Newlawn Martina was expected to go better but she has to lead in my opinion and when failing to do so was always going to struggle to win. Shelbourne Geoff got plenty of trouble from 5 in the big race (on first viewing i thought he made his own problems). Bubbly Phoenix looked to run below par but that doesn't mean the track was running on the outside in my opinion, there could be many reasons (may not run the track that well, travellijg back and forward could have taken more out of him than thought etc....).

I've been told Tralee doesn't suit wides by people so it wasn't really a shock to me but even then not many of the dogs drawn 5 or 6 where expected to win.

Thanks for that analysis Premier. Include Rossie in the next race too :(

Hindsight is a great thing but Bert was originally down to run at Tralee.I thought at the time the track would really suit him and was surprised they went to Sunderland instead. Does anybody know if he is all right ? I thought it was shocking that rptv totally ignored the incident and didn't even try to get an update

He done his hock, multiple breaks. His owner said he was not too bad through the night (a model patient) and is off to the vet at 3 today.

The reason he didn't go to Tralee was he had a problem after the Derby final and he wouldn't have been able to get a trial pre the comp in time so he decided against it.
Report Swayne July 1, 2012 11:51 AM BST
PF is right, owner says he picked up spike pad Derby night and the first vet that treated it did not get the problem sorted properly so had to go to another vet and then ran out of time prior to Tralee.

Wish the first vet had done his job right :( and Bert would be still racing. There you go, sliding doors

Is the Race Of Champions online anywhere?? I only got to see it once (should have sky plussed it) and the vids are not up on the igb site for Tralee yet.

Missed it last night. Been trying igb all morning. By all accounts Rioga wasnt that well away. Find it a bit surprising he got home over 503m, in that case, judged on Wimbledon evidence. PF, dya think Dolores will re-think going for the Derby now instead of the Laurels? Last but not beaten far Phoenix. Was looking for a big run with the Derby in mind, hope it was just a case of Tralee not suiting and hope also he's kennelled over there when it comes to Dublin

Tralee suits Rioga just as Curraheen did, i hope he misses the Derby again this year and goes for the Laurels but sure we won't be getting big prices for the Laurels like last year. I'd say she will let him take his chance in the Derby this year.

Cheers for that! Happy. I believe Panther and JFK flying in trials. Think Shaneboy was touting JFK. Must admit, he hadnt been in my top fancies for the Derby this year. What's your take on it?
Report p_r_e_m_i_e_r__f_a_n_t_a_s_y July 1, 2012 12:47 PM BST
Trials for show - Races for dough. Although you do like to see them go well in trials to show their well being.

Jayfkay was only a spot slower than Milldean Panther but he had trialled the last 2 weeks as well so i'd say it's fair to expect more improvement from Panther of the 2. He'll trial in Dundalk next week.

The next few weeks there will be dogs flying around in trials, next week we will have dogs trialling in preparation for the Champion Stakes the week after and then Thur 26th (usually a special Derby trials session) and Sat 28th in preparation for the Derby.

Thanks. Been planning my trip. Ear-marked a b&b, just waiting for cost of flights to dip. Supposed to be meeting a friend there and last time i went, spent the evening on the terraces with one of Connor's ex-kennelhands. All went pear-shaped after McGuigan beat Big Mike but came back in great style with the last two winners. Loved it. Not keen on the 5 euro per pint though!

Yeah it's the best night of the year. It's great the amount that come over from England/Scotland/Wales now, Harolds Cross does be heaving on the Friday night for the 1st round of the Puppy Derby and Derby Final night is mental packed. The price of beer is a joke over here but sure the thieving bastards ain't going to change that Plain

Will have to take it easy this year final night (yeah right), we fly out on holidays the next morning. The last time we did it to Vegas early the next morning i've no idea how we got on the flight as we stayed up the whole night on the beer and where an absolute mess Laugh We will try and take it easier this time

Every little helps. I've toyed before with staying up all night in Temple Bar and catch the early flight back to Manchester, but worth getting my head down for a few hours for the sake of a £28 guesthouse

Would you believe Rioga has only won twice from trap 1 over here from 4 races. However the 2 defeats where over 550y at Shelbourne and he didn't get home.

He is good enough to win from other boxes (6 in the Laurels final) but he must get a solo to the bend. I'm still not convinced he stays well enough to win the Derby (if they go for it), all the strong dogs seemed to get in each others way last night.

He'd have an absolutely massive chance of defending his Laurels crown, i think Curraheen over 525y is perfect for him.

He's a brilliant greyhound, one of my favourite at the moment and was bitterly disappointed he didn't go all the way at Wimbledon. It's a pity they changed all the races at Shelbourne to 550y a few years ago, imagine if the Gold Cup and Easter Cup was still 525y, he could have bagged both of them too.

I can't wait to see if they go the same route as last year and miss the Derby to keep him fresh for the Laurels or let him take his chance this year.
