Don't forget: Tuesday 7 p.m.  Walthamstow Town Hall.

The Planning Committee meeting to decide whether L&Q's plans for the Stow will be approved.

There will be plenty of local residents there (almost all against the development).

Please try to be there to give your support.

Even if the decision goes the wrong way, the fight will NOT be over, as there is considerable political support for the return of greyhound racing, including from Boris, who has the last word on all planning matters, the local MP's and a number of other MP's and two Lords.

4-3 in L&Qs favour. Two of those aye votes were from sheep following the leader of the committee (who was a right prick and tried a cheap shot at the end about people having a long way home)

They gave 3 minutes talking time to members of the public who all opposed L&Q then gave L&Q reps 6 minutes per person.  Blatant double standard

am i right in thinking that boris can overturn this decision

Thankfully yes. Let's hope he sticks by his pre-mayoral election comments.
Report Addy_D May 9, 2012 9:16 AM BST
at the risk of me looking at this too basically;

the 4 who voted for the housing were ALL labour councillors.

the 3 that voted for the greyhound stadium were 2 x conservative and 1 x lib dem.

the mayor is conservative - threfore surely he can see that it was a plot and as far as the councillors were concerned they'd never be a split labour vote? therefore, surely this result last night is not as damaging as it first appears, as it looks reasonably obvious they have done as they were told and stuck together? and being conservative, is he not more likely to give the conservative councillors more of a say over something with a narrow vote?

How they are not seemingly obliged to address the large no, of questions and concerns is amazing. They can seemingly do whatever they like:-
Ignore the heritage views, ignore the two local MPs views, Ignore all the mayoral candidates views, ignore the density of the development and closeness and height of the properties, ignore the views of the local residents, ignore the lack of parking an and inadequate local transport, ignore the impact on the local schools/traffic etc,  sweep under the carpet the issues with the river Ching ......
They just went through the motions, the vote had long been cast.

Now Boris is back as London Mayor
He dont have to worry about votes anymore
he will rubber stamp it unfortunately imoSad

anyway if it drags on it will only waste more tax payers money
L & Q have watsed enough of that alreadySurprised
brave effort by Ricky, Barrie Clegg, Bob Moreton and rest of SOSHappy

at times think these coonts need to realise they are elected in by the local community, they are there to serve the local community, so when 95% of the community want to oppose something, the council should listen, as that is who they are there to serve - unless they are corrupt - imvho

sometimes think this country has a right cheek to go around playing World Judge to the african and muslim countries when realistically, albeit on a less brutal scale, there are clear instances of exactly the same practices going on over here.

i think it's a disgrace that those four labour twats all voted for housing, obviously decided to vote that way or told to vote that way long before the meeting was held.
it's a crying shame that politics and local politics is just a gravy train and nothing else, every bit of land around london is built on with houses/flats even if the land in question is no bigger than a postage stamp, it's a bloddy joke.
Report spion-kop May 9, 2012 8:52 PM BST
by the way, i still have faith in boris and believe he will quash this decision.

I hope you are right SpionHappy

..the trouble is if he did, then it would not mean Greyhound racing would automatically
continue..
we would be back at square oneSad

He may well want toConfused
but I am not sure he want to overule a council decision myself
would need a very good reason imo
Report ebulGery May 9, 2012 9:41 PM BST
I think it is the wrong decision personallySad
I think Bob Moreton's plan would have been better long term for the borough
and Greyhound Racing of course

But I dont think L & Q were ever likely to back down
it would have raised too many uncomfortable questions
about the whole affair

The Credit Crunch did not help either
land prices fell and no one could afford to just hand L & Q
back their money

only my imo

i hope i am right as well ebulgery, the stow has a long and rich history with regards dog racing, it has brought entertainment and pleasure to many many thousands down the years and if boris is looking for a reason he can use the one that i've highlighted in this post, lets just hope  he's got a large enough pair of round ones.
Report Nightmares May 10, 2012 12:38 AM BST
I can't see Boris accepting the planning application

Labour councillors voted for it while Tory/Lib Dem opposed it, so he's not going to help Labour out

He should be all too happy for Labour to alienate residents in a pro-Labour area (and there were quite a few people telling the Labour councillors they wouldn't vote for the party again)
Report lulu11 May 10, 2012 11:49 AM BST
for a change nightmares a very sensible post! i aggree 100% with what you have said but i still think its a long road to get the stow up and running again im afraid.

Very sad for Waltham Forest not just the loss of a great night out and sense of identity but the perversion of local democracy. Sometimes our local governments are no better than third world counries when it comes to money. This deal was set back in 2006/7. Develop the Stow, move the bus company off council land so that can be sold to probably L and Q and encourage new business onto the car park. Increased council taxation (circa 300K per annum doubled for six years by government new build bonus) Two sets of local business taxation and 4 mill of S106 payments including 1.75m for leisure improvements to track and swimming pool (i wonder if that is ring fenced or will end up in the council general fund). Bob Mortons proposals are what most people want but give more to the community than the council. The local community will suffer big time and receive NO compensation in this just the crap it will bring. The cost of the housing on this development will increase due to the massive loss L and Q will make. The lack of affordable housing highlights the failure of the current system to porovide social and affordable housing. The provision is effectively privatised and fails local communities. The mayor is chairman of I think the HCA part of the consortium that owns the Catford site that still remains undeveloped despite having planning permission for nearly 600 units of which half were earmarked as affordable under agreed protocol. The reason it is undeveloped is its lack of viability, too costly with all that affordable housing. No one wants to build social housing..more and more developers are buying their way out of the requirement with S106 payments that cash strapped (or poorly run councils) snalp up. If the mayor says yes to L and Q and quotes the need for affordable housing he should be embarrassed bigtime over the lack of development of the Catford site
