Bexhill Eoin (Multibet- Eoin Og), one of the greatest stud dogs of all time, has died.

Saddened Newry stud owner Brendan Matthews said last night: "He was running around the paddock yesterday and we were all shocked when he died later that night."

He is a huge loss to coursing breeders as his progeny have dominated the coursing fields for the past four seasons.

A Derby winner in 2006, he won the Stud Dog of the Year award for the past three seasons and is a very hot favourite to win it for the fourth time this year.

This season he produced a total of 57 trial stake winners, including reserves, a record that is unlikely to be ever surpassed. He sired a total of 164 trial stake winners.

Also this season he sired 23 All Age winners, 14 Bitch Stake winners as well as five puppy stake winners.

With 52 litters on the ground for next season, Bexhill Eoin’s progeny look sure dominate the coursing game for a while yet.

* Greyhound sport in Ireland lost one of its greatest ambassadors yesterday with the death of Brendan O’Connell form Limerick.

A native of Abbeyfeale, Brendan was brought up in the greyhound tradition and worked for more than 30 years at the old Markets Field track in Limerick. Most of those years were as Racing Manager and later General Manager.

He was also a tremendous coursing enthusiast and was one of the leading slippers for a number of years. Brendan had been a regular attender at the tracks and coursing venues until recent times when his health deteriorated. Funeral details have yet to be finalised.
