I admit, I'm useless at mental arithmatic and it seems to be the numbers wizards who are most successful betting on dogs, although they know nothing about them. However, from what i can gather, it only leads to closed accounts because of the size of their bets, backing and laying.
I'm an old fashioned type of man and figure you either want a bet or not, instead of continually backing against yourself.
People say this dog is likely to do this, this dog is likely to do that and the other dog does this. All pure conjecture, although aspects considered.
A fast starter can miss it, a slow starter can trap and dogs that move off or head for the rails, can go up a bit straighter sometimes etc.
The point I'm trying to make is why complicate matters? All i do is work out the top 2 or so in the betting, assess what leads and guesstimate if it will be caught. More complicated or imponderable than that and i would tend to leave the race alone.
I usually go for dogs with good strike-rates, to my recollection and dogs that have won for me before.
I like to see the best dogs winning (or at least the best dogs to my mind), that's why I'm more likely to go for something i price up shorter than longer and some dogs i wouldnt back with somebody else's money.
A race should be all about the best dog winning, as with football the best team and athletics the best runner winning etc. Not withstanding, we all have our own favourites and root for the underdog sometimes.
I suggest, we would all like to be best and its only the best dogs that are best remembered.
I'm not saying my philosophy is cast-iron and my system fool-proof but since keeping records, i've made clear profits over the past 6 years

you mention if the race looks too complicated you would leave it alone? this is the type of race where you make the money, if the race is easy everyone wants the same thing value all gone! the hardest playing field brings the biggest rewards[:)]

Yes Czech, the bigger the odds, the bigger the rewards but that's not usually my style. Take horse racing for example, I'd rather find a 2/1 double, than find an 8/1 winner of a 16-runner handicap (same odds). Each to their own
