Old Jim is Romfords Top Punter!!!!
He can blag 4/1 a 5/4 shot off Simmo!!!!!!!
Even if it don't win, he has the value!!!!!!
Even if it does win, he will still moan!!!!!!!!!

He does not give the honest types like myself and Grant
a chance!!!! :(

Albert is the best Romford punter for miles around. Others may be louder, may oioi more, but nobody can do what Albert does...and he is a top top man who has come through various life-threatening illnesses. My god, if he was twenty again today, he'd rip the books apart
Report thederby April 22, 2010 7:06 PM BST
This topic comes up time and time again, and the answer is always the same, Grant by half hour, ask him about any dog he will tell you exactly what it does.
Close second is Mustapha!!! Hope all well mate
Report Mustapha Bath April 22, 2010 7:25 PM BST
I'm well thanks "The Derby" but you must be feeling under
the weather to suggest that I'm up there!!!!!!!!
Thanks anyway :)

Hope that you and "your clan" are well!!!! :)

Old Jim is a legend, been racing regularly since the 1940s. Never misses a meeting. He deserves a knighthood. I would love to see him interviewed on TV.
Report champagne charlie April 22, 2010 8:30 PM BST

DML...is Albert the one you herald the one round the Millenium, wears glasses? You may know the form inside out but unless youre beating the books Jim , Grant etc arent the best....TSW has all the necessary qualities
Report bossiefossie April 22, 2010 10:25 PM BST
ALICIA a quick question are you ** TSW if not get your head out his ar$e lol.
Report Mustapha Bath April 22, 2010 10:33 PM BST
Old Jim don't watch DVD's, Don't card read, half the time
he don't even watch the race. (Too busy moaning, giving out
toffees and doughnuts, and reminicing about Catford and Walthamstow)
Yet he still wins.
Just backs the favourite and the next in at double the odds.

He will be 136 on December 25th.
Was born on Christmas Day just to get double the presents!!! :^0
Report Mustapha Bath April 22, 2010 10:41 PM BST
Obviously I wish Bob all the best Ian.
If he were a Greyhound, he would win 3 Derbies, 3 Legers and
a TV Trophy. One of the bravest and toughest blokes that anyone
could meet.
Report thederby April 22, 2010 10:43 PM BST
Nice one mate will tell him, presume you there tomorrow.
Report overboard April 23, 2010 11:50 AM BST
There was a notice in yesterdays RP about a Len Payne, a Romford regular, who had passed away recently. I can't place him. Can anyone help?
Report DONEMYLOT April 23, 2010 12:53 PM BST
Yes, Alicia, the mighty. keeps himself to himself...fourty years making it pay cannot be bad.

I'm going there tomorrow for a couple of pints with a few of the snooker punting lads, gissa winner, I cant do this graded nonsence
Report Mustapha Bath April 23, 2010 3:16 PM BST
There is an old boy called Len that has been at Romford for
years, I think that he has owned dogs with Maggie.
I'm not sure if it is him, I will find out tonight.
Report greek spector April 23, 2010 4:32 PM BST
there used to be a geezer there, looked a bit like a younger Norman Wisdom, think they called him AQR or summit like that, he was'nt bad when PL was marking his card ;)
Report staggy April 23, 2010 10:52 PM BST
I know of 2 people getting a good living at romford without showing their hand.
Maybe not winning as much as grant but both happy sitting in the background creaming off and happy not to be in the spotlight.
Report ALICIA April 23, 2010 11:20 PM BST
APR was fantastic on here.....DML , forget the graded , stick to opens, bookies not so clued up
Report Mustapha Bath April 24, 2010 12:04 AM BST
Just to inform any would be "Bad Guys" reading this thread.
Grant does not carry cash and he does not win all of the time.
Good Judge, Good punter, puts the hours in but is not a
Big Time Charlie giving it large.
Unlike our mate DaveyBoy, I very much doubt that Grant will be
pleased with any attention that he gets on here.
A quiet guy and a good guy!
Report Eaglehawk April 24, 2010 10:01 AM BST
Overboard and Mustapha Bath, it was for Frank Payne and not Len Payne.
Frank Payne was Romford trainer Peter Payne's father and was a regular at the track. The funeral is Friday.
The old boy Len you mention was Len Jones. He died a couple of years ago.

Report PLASH November 28, 2025 2:20 PM GMT
Hi all,
Bit of a long shot, but I’m trying to find out more about my grandad’s greyhound days.

His name was Frank Payne and he trained greyhounds in London, probably late 60s through the 80s. Family stories he was involved with the TV Trophy / TV Gold Cup, and was generally a big character around the tracks. Also used to have my dad Dave Payne assisting him.

He passed away before I was born, so I only know the stories — would love to hear if anyone here remembers him, raced against him, or has any info at all.

Thanks in advance.
Report Temper December 7, 2025 7:18 PM GMT
The Frank Payne i knew was the father of the Romford trainer Peter Payne...he owned betting shops in the east london area during the 60s ...
