there was some good value on here last night. ballylacey boy was 7/2, 7/4 on course. Also backed Ballymac Judge at an average of around 14 (second) and Recovery Lad at about 12-13 (second).

notts used to be a strong market a couple of years ago anyone going there to bet 144 you will have the men in white suits coming for you

I saw a certain open race punter once buy Steve thingy (ex bookie at Romford, Tony Morris man you know) a cup of tea for the lift to Notts.

'Large or small?' said the tabard laden Dina Lady. Looking on in shock, a certain punter lept up 'Small' and looked positively aghast that he should part with the other 40p.

Even monkey anyone?

I accept all you say about the %'s on course but it was worth going just to see the race between Farloe Lee, Eye on the Storm and Romeo Maldini. Rare that two good dogs get a run when in against each other but to see all three having a go was special.

i watched the race in betting shop big mac used to shout come racing im shouting stay away or take your moble and phone betfair up

to get a true reflection on how good, or bad, a market is, then its only fair in order to get a true insight into that market to see what prices have been available, to decent money. Punters rarely get the "knock back" at Nottingham and in any case the perecentage rarely comes into play as it would be very unusual to lay all six dogs in a Race. It would be to easy to bet to 115-120% but not take a bet and I assume that would also be the cause of some complaints on here....
Report the.mad.dog.man November 11, 2009 2:22 PM GMT
i bet they dont get many knockbacks there betting to 144 i used to go there about 2 years ago was a good market
Report [x] These checkboxes suck November 11, 2009 2:28 PM GMT
144% means nothing if you're laying 1 dog in a race
Report the.mad.dog.man November 11, 2009 2:30 PM GMT
knock the others out then
Report [x] These checkboxes suck November 11, 2009 2:31 PM GMT
but... there's no punters there to back the others....!!!!
Report VERY NICE November 11, 2009 2:35 PM GMT
if theres no other punters to back the others then they could make every race 105 % couldnt they?
Report Ravage Again November 11, 2009 2:37 PM GMT

I agree, the SP's at Notts on Monday night were a disgrace. The market there too is much weaker than several years ago (as is every other ring in the country !). However, weak rings were not commonplace in pre-BAGS and Betfair days. They are merely the rconsequence of those two (and several other) factors. Don't get me wrong, Betfair is a brilliant conception and great for those with access to it.
As for the SP returns, these can partly be explained by the ludicrously unfair way the returns are made. A couple of examples - last week, a dog I had priced at 7/2, became a 4/1 shot without the fav (he considered it a no-hoper, and was subsequently proved right). I adjusted my price to 9/2. The other layer considered it a 5/2 chance and prferred to keep it that price (his perrogative). The SP return ??? - you guessed it ---- 5/2 !!!
Example 2 - earlier this year, I returned an A8 dog at 1/3 (I admit to acting very unprofessionally but thought I was making a point !). The dog in question (which won by over 7 lenghts incidentally !!) was a 6/4 shot next door and Evens without the original fav. The SP return here .... 1/3. To you get my drift ??
As for Monday night, Borna Rocker was laid at 4/1 and 7/2 to over 2K (returned 2/1) and Jordansoilutions at 1/2 (returned 4/11- even though it was 4/9 on my board at the off). There were several other similar instances too.
Mad Dog Man has an obvious point and I don't blame him for his stance (we have had some excellent exchanges over the years) but the simple matter is, even if we bet to 115%, people would still rather stay at home with Betfair and bet to 97.4% wouldn't they ?

M M - I don't remember but it is irrelevant as I never attempted to play on the race - I think I only took about £10 !!! The point I was trying to make was how unfair the system is for returning SPs
Report PD November 12, 2009 8:16 AM GMT
and how misleading they can be to people who just look at the SP percentages !

At least you can get a few quid on at notts still, Peter layed us four monkeys in a stayers maiden a couple of months back (Sorry Peter).

I know plenty of places where you'd struggle to get that on in the whole ring these days :(

Report PD November 12, 2009 9:03 AM GMT
Thanks for that sportsjudge. In fairness, all three of us at Notts regularly lay bets that the strengh of the market does not merit.

The race PD is referring to the sp's returned were 1/3 , 9/4 , 7/2 , 4/1 , 6/1 , 6/1. To be fair to PD he didn't cut the ** all in one go. It went something like this -

Step 1 - I walk into the ring , ** gets cut from 7/4 into 5/4.

Step 2 - I move hand towards pocket , ** gets cut to 4/5.

Step 3 - I ask PD is he having a laugh , ** gets cut to 1/3.

Total layed ? As PD says about a tenner !

Come racing !

PS , She was never the job the 7 length victory would suggest. There was alot of trouble in the race and she's a ** who likes her own way which due to trouble she got !

The 1/3 saga was very very funny to watch.

And just to say as well, Mr Charlesworth is an excellent man to bet w/o the fav in non BAGS, as he is definitely his own man and bets according to his opinion.
Report PD November 12, 2009 8:07 PM GMT
Past the Post, who prefers to remain anonymous, sums that particular race up about right ( but omits to say that the 1/3 shot was available at 5/2 !) and the dog that won was racing in 5 grade higher company about 3 months later !
DEFINITELY COME RACING ! if you're on the right end of that !!

Steve Charlesworth is indeed an excellent layer and a damn good friend of mine, so he won't mind me saying that he has never been wrong in his life ... except once, when he thought he was .. and he wasn't !!!
Report PD November 12, 2009 8:12 PM GMT
Incidentally, the dog in question, running in A8 company, did a 5.18 sectional but that was not the best of the night. I think one of the A1 one dogs bettered that !!
Report PD November 12, 2009 8:18 PM GMT
Anyway, all this is just part of dog racing - a bit of banter between punters and layers. We all have a laugh at the end of it ! That is what we want - Opinions - Views - but above all, enjoying dog racing for what it is and the game we all love. I have already admitted to have been out of order on that particular race but still maintain respect for the connections concerned and hope to do so for some time.
Report Fenway November 12, 2009 8:42 PM GMT
Indeed, one of the A1 dogs did better the 5.18 sectional, it was the Don, with a 5.09.
Report PASTTHEPOST November 12, 2009 9:16 PM GMT
PD you're right , you're apology came and was accepted. I'm not attempting to hide , it's Mark who has dogs in said kennel. I do apologise for saying you actually opened 7/4 when in fact it was 5/2. I'm sure if i'd had some of the 5/2 i'd have remembered more clearly.

It is all about banter I agree , I look forward to sharing some more with you at some point in the future.
