For anybody who has any experience of greyhound ownership...
1) How much would you advise to spend on your first dog? 2) Buy an unraced pup or 2/3 year old already racing? 3) Is £5 per day training fees a good estimate?
500-750 would have something already racing at the track. The advantage of that is that you know the dog and can assess its chances better. Trainers usually have dogs for sale and can find something to suit your budget.

Myself and 3 friends went into ownership for the 1st time about 18 months ago, we decided to buy a graded dog as opposed to a pup as it was our first go at it. We viewed 5 dogs, prices ranged from £650-£1800, and ended up going middle of the road, paying £1000. He is a middle grader at Wimbledon and we have had a great time owning him, now we have a bit more experience we will be buying a pup next time,in the hope of getting lucky with a "goodun". Our training fees are £6 per day + vat, but this will vary slightly from trainer to trainer as some dont add vat. I hope this helps and wish you the best of luck, if you have any other queries feel free to ask.....

Good luck. Feel free to ask other questions. Its also nice if u can arrange regular kennel visits with the trainer. So that u can walk the dog. You get more enjoyment out of it that way.

I was paying £7 per day plus v.a.t. 20 years ago, I'm amazed that trainers can do it for a fiver a day now. To dip your toe in the water I'd get a grader that is already running, share the purchase costs and kennel fees with a mate or two and if you really like ownership, and there is no greater feeling in the sport than cheering your own dog home, then think about splashing out on a puppy or an unexposed type from Ireland next time. Good luck.

If he stays fit he will generally run once a week, we have been fairly lucky as he has only really had one spell out which was after he went lame. Without winning, with 4 runs a month will pretty much cut your bill in half so fingers crossed you have some luck.

Buy a ** at five months, send it over to Ireland and then watch as it gets injured trialling in, then goes into season, makes the grade then goes into season again. All the time paying bills. No! Second thoughts follow Valueman's advice!
Seriously, something schooled and ready to trial would be most fun. Dog over ** for a new syndicate, IMO. Depends on where you want to run also. Good luck.
