It’s been the dream of everybody involved in greyhound racing and eventually it is set to come to pass. The 2011 Ladbrokes.com Irish Derby is set to become a truly International Championship with the news that the Australians are planning to race some of their top dogs in the event this year. This could mean that our Derby may include Irish, English, Australian, American and European bred and trained greyhounds – what a prospect!
This sensational news arrived from Melbourne today with the confirmation that leading Victoria trainers Graeme Bate and Robert Britton intend to bring teams of greyhounds over to Ireland with the Derby the specific target. The two Lara based trainers have decided to pool their talents and make a genuine bid to win the Irish Derby. Bate and Britton are currently inoculating a 12-dog team that will eventually be whittled down to a realistic team of four or less young but determined and talented chasers. They have had their first round of rabies shots with further vaccinations to come. The trainers have already costed the campaign with JetPets, who would handle the transportation details. It has even been suggested that JetPets boss Sandy Matheson may act as Tour Leader to Ireland. Already, plans are advanced for a large supporting group of Aussie greyhound enthusiasts to make the trip over for the latter stages of the Derby. Robert Britton, who hosted a memorable BBQ for the visiting Irish group on our last trip Down Under, is a terrific advocate for international competition and he actually raced two dogs in the ill-fated Derby Lane Million. GOLDEN BASE Graeme Bate said: “Look, I’m not in this for the money. I’ve had a terrific couple of years with Paul Wheeler’s dogs. I’ve done and won just about everything I could possibly do here. It would be just fantastic to be able to go over there with a couple of dogs and have a red hot crack”. Bate and Britton will be calling on the assistance of young Tipperary trainer Tommy O’Donovan who spent some time with Britton last year. They will be based with Pat Dalton in Golden and hope to set up base there approximately three weeks before the Derby commences on August 4th. Among the dogs that Bate has inoculated are Up And Away, Alita Ellen, Allen Elroy and the Paul Wheeler owned racers Martilli Bale, Shereen Bale, Stanford Bale, Stefan Bale and Tonneli Bale – all top grade sprinters. An intriguing possible from Britton’s kennel is the brilliant Hutmaker, a grand son of Gentle Memory which Pat Dalton sent to Melbourne to challenge for the Topgun back in 2000. His sire is none other than Shelbourne specialist Premier Fantasy. Britton also has an American racer called Flight Plan as well as Benforcer and a highly rated young pup that is due to make his debut shortly. Leading Australian greyhound correspondent Peter Pearson says: “Having witnessed first-hand the pandemonium associated with the build up and then the celebratory scenes of an Irish Derby, I hope the two Aussie trailblazers get to experience the same excitement and Craic that engulfs the world’s greatest greyhound race later this year. It would be great if they bid to wrest this wonderful and historic championship from a land that lives and breathes greyhound racing”. |

NOW THE YANKS EYE OUR DERBY
Sunday, February 13th First it was the Aussies and now it appears that the Americans will also be challenging for the Ladbrokes.com Irish Derby at Shelbourne Park in August. Listowel native Fr Bryan Dalton has been a wonderful supporter of Irish greyhound racing and has raced Kiowa Myth in the Derby over the last two years. Speaking yesterday from Florida he intimated that he is likely to be represented again this year. Dalton thoroughly enjoyed the Kiowa Myth involvement for the past two years and is determined to have a real crack at the classic. He said: “I have a few dogs running in Memphis at the moment and I may send over at least one of them. The top one would be a dog called Jonathan Swift and the other is Samuel Beckett. They have gone up to A Grade at the moment and if they hold their form then they could be on their way over to Mossie O’Connor”. The two dogs are litter brothers by Soprano Drive out of the Dalton owned Deerfield Marley. Stressing the value Fr Dalton places on Irish culture the names of the five members of the litter are Jonathan Swift, Samuel Beckett, James Joyce, Brenda Fricker and Roma Downey. Meanwhile, Ladbrokes’ Trading Manager Richard Harkness has been quick off the mark with prices about the chances of an Australian victory in the Irish Derby. He said: “We commend both Graeme Bate and Robert Britton for taking this unprecedented step and would like to thank them for increasing the excitement and profile of the 2011 Ladbrokes.com Irish Greyhound Derby”. However, he is offering 16-1 about any of the Australian raiders winning the classic while the Sandown Laurels winner Up And Away has been quoted at 50-1 and fellow raider Hutmaker at the same price. There is no doubt about the quality of the Aussie trackers but the big question is how they will adapt to the totally different Irish racing system. It really has added tremendous interest to an already intriguing competition. Bloody foreigners takin over ![]() ![]() |

McGuigan trials Saturday night
|
|
By:
Out of action since he scored that remarkable victory in last year’s Ladbrokes.com Irish Derby final, Tyrur McGuigan is booked in for a trial at Shelbourne Park on Saturday night.
McGuigan improved with each run through last year’s Derby and set a new record for a Derby final as he led home his brother Tyrur Big Mike. However McGuigan was badly held up with a problem earlier this year and is only now setting out on the road towards the defence of his title. Meanwhile, Big Mike will also be a runner on Saturday when he contests an Open 550 where his rivals will be Broadstrand Lad, Quick Lee, Simple Class, Smooth Daddy and Fatboyz Tyson. |
|
By:
Swashbuckling Irish Derby winner Tyrur McGuigan made a first public appearance since his historic surge to glory last September when doing a very impressive sprint trial before racing at Shelbourne Park on Saturday night.
The son of Brett Lee and Tyrur Temptress led home his litter brother Big Mike in the fastest time ever recorded in an Irish Derby final but hadn’t been seen since due to some training problems. But McGuigan has really come into form in recent weeks and he looked a picture as Conor Fahy walked him to traps on Saturday night. His clock of 18.70 for the Shelbourne sprint would have to be rated an exceptional effort considering the lengthy lay-off. The townviewfoods.com Champion Stakes and a defence of the Ladbroke.com Irish Derby is now the likely route for the champion. |

^^^ you certainly got a good run Saturday and he must still represent value if he can keep it up.
Shaneboy Fantasy was very impressive and I am waiting to see what Rattling Tank is like around Shelbourne as he beat Shaneboy a couple of times in Tralee. Fatboyz Tyson must also be considered. 28.30 is a sign of rude health! |

He is owned by 2 English lads metro, Shaun and Alf (Hovex) own him. He is going for the Laurels and the Sprint Cup, they had a decision between which event to go for and think that 525y will suit better than 550y at the moment, the lads have been very forthcoming with their plans and deserve credit for that. |
