Fleetwood the new Westy ... can't putt under pressure
JB gonna give that 84 he had in The Players final round a run for its money.
pity the wind / rain wasn't there from day 1 ... winner would be +6 or more
it seems the multi millionaire best players in the world are simply chokers ... should have read the anecdotes by Keith Miller about what real pressure is

After the fab last Sunday this has been a zzzzzzzzzzzz fest does Portrush have a crazy golf course should have held the final round here
Sky still giving us shots from 3/4 minutes back 'as live' looking at the clocks on the tees.
no 59 watch today but putting JB on 90 watch might be just as exciting
The leaders exploited the benigh conditions for their groups pre cut but the tournament was won with Lowry's birdie fest late Saturday. With 5 to go, we are where we were at the start of today. 4 in it. Lowry just has to play to the economics surely. Have we been here before??
Every time SL has found the rough he has had a great lie can it continue
That could not help Tommy the fat lad in the shot as he's about to swing that's 2 shots running
Fair play, Shane deserves a victory stroll he can enjoy.
Stenson gets on the bogey train to deny his top 20 backers, these boys are something else
JB +11 now - losing serious money, but I suppose it doesn't hurt quite the same when you're already rich
How are these guys not keeping up with a group containing JB shooting a million?
JB gonna come up short most likely, but an outside chance at the last.
been some shocking golf played today ,if we,d had rain and 15/20 mph winds all week, surely we arnt saying 10 over would have won, 3 par 5,s were still reachable in 2 despite the weather, plus the 5th
Looked like 95% had waived the white flag at the start of the round today
Koepka going to miss out on a bit of history - could have been first player to finish top 3 in all majors in same year
nice 87, 16 over for holmes
you try and be quick playing 15 more shots than most
you try and be quick playing 15 more shots than most
Lets hope its another 68 years before we come back to this course as boring a golf comp I can ever remember
after this I think they'll be back soon - will want to give Rory another crack before he's too old.
SL has been outstanding but some of these other so called big players want to have a good look at themselves
Well done big lad- a thoroughly well played tourny - very little let up by him over the 4 days

Just plain wrong that the major season is over now.
Agree, should space them out over the calendar year
Why don't they still do the medal for the amatuer winner etc?
paulypaul no amateur winner this year as none made the cut
Lowry hadn't made a cut in the open since 2014 (missed the previous 4)
Oh, cheers guys. fair enough!
I had some dosh on on Tommy to win from pre tourney but I have to say Shane was the man today and all week. Fair play, a humble man and a derserving champion.

Now for the pitch and putt of the Barbasol
There's pitch and putt and then there's -24 leading after 3 rounds. Makes that track Lashley won on look like Oakmont.
the looney tim barter and sky say its just a matter of time for tommy to win a major
rory, tiger, dusty, rose, kopkea, raahm, speith, thomas etc all bomb out and he gets beat by 6

think he played last 2 rounds with westy and shane went from 3 behind to 4 behind and 6 behind, their not exactly indimidating to play alongside
Tommy is another like Westwood who plays well tee to green (usually) but can't putt for dough when pressure applied in the biggies ... I hope he wins at least 1 major but better players than him haven't ... top opportunities only come around a few times in your career ... this was one of them
Perhaps Lowry was destined to win this week but Fleetwood had opportunities early doors to close the gap but couldn't do so

shoot this down if you like, dont think tommy wants to win a biggie,he might think itll change his life-not for the better, doesnt really want that glare of superstardom....
Of course the tournament has to be judged on the whole 72 holes and Shane unquestionably played the best golf most consistently . Looking at how the last round unfolded however, I think Tommy's miss on the first was the pivotal moment . If he had halved Shane's lead in one fell swoop -the psychological effect on both players would have been massive. It was like Rory's miss for an eagle at the 2nd against Patrick Reed in the 2018 Masters which would have wiped out Reed's lead . In both cases a shot gained felt like a shot lost and vice versa.
The most boring weekend of a major ever, anticlimactic to say the least
The media can try and sell it as something it wasn't but it was boring yesterday lets be honest
Its time they started making these courses hard, make them worthy of hosting a major, winning scores of -16 is getting rather tiresome, what happened to +2 being the winning score? where they have to grind and grind and grind just to finish on that total? these guys are being called the "greatest batch ever" its a f***ing joke in my opinion. when the courses are set up that easy its no wonder they are breaking records ffs

The equipment plays a part in that, to be fair. When average driving distance has gone from 270 yards, to 320 yards, courses just cant keep up. I know it was downhill, but when a 385 yards length hole is driveable by so many...? How long would a Par 5 need to be nowadays to be a genuine 3 stroke hole, to reach the green, with modern equipment?
Do all that, and for the other 51 weeks of the year, your average golfer would find course impossible

yeah just change the par
make it par 67 and lowry has won at level par, with 6 over second.
everybody happy
course was brilliant yesterday and all week, nice to see such great golf, and if folk
watching failed to see it was a bit of a struggle on sunday then ...hey ho

I agree, it was anti climatic, but that wasn't the fault of the course it was down to the complete brilliance of Shane Lowry. He simply handled the conditions considerably better than anyone else.
Lowry also had early/late tee times on first 2 days and that was considered by many to be the more difficult side of the draw

With due respect Sontar, Portrush is one of the best tests of golf ever for an open - the reason for the decent scores was that the wind and rain didn't come until the second half of the final round when it really showed it's teeth. Only four players in the top 15 were under par and none of the top 5 in the final round. With less benign conditions next time, Portrush will be a beast.

I think that barring extreme conditions (either very high winds or a completely baked out course) the days of over par majors are all but gone. It's not just the equipment but also the fact that more and more of them are gym rats not just bombing it but hacking it out of any length of rough with relative ease. Used to be the USGA or whoever could make a course super-long and the rough mega-thick and keep the scores down to par or worse but these days if you do that, you just end up with Brooks Koepka holding your trophy on about 10 under.
I also wonder if climate change is starting to bite a bit, particularly for the US majors. Firm and fast with rock hard greens is the way to control the scores but it feels like everywhere they turn up to has had about a week of rain in advance, which again plays to the bomb and wedge crowd.
