It's been a grindhouse affair for Phil Mickelson, who missed another fairway at No. 2 and then came up just short of the green and hit his third about 10 feet below the hole. He knocked that one in for par to remain at even. If Phil can somehow post an under par round, that'd be very impressive given how he's played off the tee today.

Pretty sure they firm it up for weekend. Luring them in false sense of security..
Pile it on Mr Majors...Brooks.Lovely putting from the big Tiger too.Hoping wind doesn't get out of hand this evening.Leave until Sunday.Pretty sure they firm it up for weekend. Luring them in false sense of security..
Feels like the first time in ages we've had a major that hasn't been preceded by a week of rain and the USGA of all people decide to turn the hoses on, surely they only need to do that if there's 25mph winds forecast and there definitely aren't. Question is with it being cool and overcast how much can these greens firm up by the weekend? At the moment this isn't much different to an AT&T.

Very disappointing isn't it. The last true US Open was Merion in 2013. They've had weather against them a few years since and bad choices the other years. This looks another bad choice.

Surely not. Would need to get significantly harder from where it is now and without wind I don't see how they do that short of putting the pins in the bunkers.

The wheels have temporarily come off for Koepka and the Hoff both dropping shots, while ROSEY eagles 6th to get to -3.
You get the impression that Tiger's had that putt before as he walks in a 22 footer for birdie on 7th to get back to -1.

They will certainly not be happy with 40 guys under par at the moment, that's for sure. I do hope you're right, although knowing the USGA if they do try to take it the other way they'll probably mess that up too.

Coverage ****g appalling too. Change name to Feature groups permanently. Its pathetic. Like only got 3 cameras out there.
Two groups and if your in lead or English you get on.
Very annoying indeed.

golf is such a frustrating sport to follow, because the coverage has always been poor.
you probably need 4 or 5 channels to cover everything that golf watchers want to see.
then you still need shot tracker, and betfair odds open too.

Defo gonna get tougher. Big guns are really really struggling here, and theres no wind and slowish greens. Only need 10 15 mph and its game on.
Think Brooks Rose and a few thers left a few out there.

Hopefully this is the plan - fairly easy opening day to keep plenty in it early on then let it dry out and tuck the pins a bit more over the weekend, ratchet up the difficulty til it's last man standing.

You did well jedi....i'm ashamed to say that it was just on too late for me last night, had to call it a day at 11.30pm! What time did they actually finish? Doesn't bode well for Sunday night for me!

Big guns didnt finish until around 3 am,and was several groups still out. Watched Rose take lead then bobos. He putted superbly back nine, really did. Keopka played really bad imo or could've been alongside. Conditions were not that bad imo.
Think a few may kick on this morning if conditions suitable.

Thank jedi. I am glad Keopka played as badly as he did, it was starting to look a bit ominous after 6 holes, his chip in on 5 was probably a 2 shot swing. I am surprised at the scoring in general, wasn't expecting it to be as low as it is but I guess you can do that at Pebble. I hope it's a lot tougher over the next few days, I prefer to watch a tougher test and that's what the US Open should be all about in my eyes.

Does look to be a fair difference between AM and PM wind today, and if the greens start to firm up through the day the guys who did well late yesterday may well have the advantage. Most of the big names starting on 10 in the morning but the advantage might be with the guys going early off 1, get the scoring stretch from 1-7 in perfect conditions. Wise, Lashley, Reavie and Stenson might have the plum tee times today if they're able to keep momentum up.

Brooks also had one of those lucky breaks with the chip in early on or could have been around par as I dont think that chip would have stayed on the green people forget often about things like that

Morning wave: Scott Piercy got his nose out in front early on, but late errors on both nines limited his early clubhouse target to 4-under-par 67 and it was soon bettered by Rickie Fowler who made three early birdies and maintained the pace to post 5-under-par 66. He was soon joined by championship specialist Xander Schauffele and Louis Oosthuizen. Sepp Straka, Emiliano Grillo, Gary Woodland and, most notably of all, Rory McIlroy settled for 68. Dustin Johnson could do no better then a level-par 70 and reigning AT&T Pro-am champion Phil Mickelson limped to a 1-over 72.
Afternoon session: Brooks Koepka and Viktor Hovland provided the fireworks early in the afternoon as they both roared out to 4-under thru 6. Both slowed their pace to finish on 2-under 69. It was Nate Lashley who impressed most. Playing his first round in a major championship, he managed a blemish-free 67 to post inside the top 10. That was until Justin Rose came through late and seemingly couldn't miss on the greens. He went 15-for-15 from inside 15 feet and needed just 22 putts to make his way around today. That resulted in the best round of the day, a 6-under 65.
Leaderboard: -6 Justin Rose, -5 Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele, Louis Oosthuizen, Aaron Wise Notables: -3 Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson, Francesco Molinari -2 Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Sergio Garcia, Graeme McDowell, Hideki Matsuyama, Brooks Koepka, Matt Kuchar, -1 Jason Day, Paul Casey, Tiger Woods, Evs Dustin Johnson, Tommy Fleetwood, +1 Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, +2 Justin Thomas,

Koepka (69) – Looked like a potential runaway victory when he opened with birdies in four of his first six holes. Slowed his pace at the day wore on with three bogeys and one birdie on the final 10 holes. Nearly lost his tee ball on the closing, par-5 18th despite clubbing down off the tee. Will be glad to regroup before a morning tee time on Friday.

There were five rounds of 66 or lower on Thursday – a total made even more remarkable given the difficulty posed historically in US Opens at Pebble. In the first five US Open Championships held at Pebble Beach, there were a combined total of 2,232 rounds played – and just seven resulted in scores of 66 or lower.
