Noticed a little support for Paul Casey. Has to be respected. Traded a free euro100 if he brings home the bacon.

The day before a fine tournament. Pity more people do not contribute here but just look for wisdom. That is fine but a bit of banter is always interesting. @ QUINCY.... LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR PICKS. My recent p and l on golf does not make pretty reading. Sport of Kings is keeping me green.

It will be soft yes but then it usually is at Sheshan, makes it easy for the good wedge players to go pin seeking when they lay up, while making the approach over water to the par 5's longer for the big boys. Three of the par 5's have water carries on the second shot, the 8th you have to carry off the tee as well. Can easily go the other way, just like last year with Knox and Kisner and when Bubba won it was Clark he beat in the playoff.

I will have a go buts its very small stakes for me. Looking for value ill take Fowler 45/1 Moore 55/1 Hun-An 80/1 all e/w.

@therhino..... looks like u are spot on . Sergio is better than most with mid to wedge. Hope I do not regret ignoring him in my bets.

@El Bandido...... u seem to have a strong hand after round 1. Good work as per usual.

Ill have a wee nibble on 2nd round leader market. I think 11/2 Matsuyama & 9/2 Fowler are the stand out prices for me, i slightly favour Fowler but its a split stake win bet  on each  for me. Anybody  have any  thoughts on this market guys?

I think it will take a tap on the ankle with a hurley to halt the gallop of Hideki. Now in the top 10 rated globally and does not freeze in the lead. I hope I am incorrect.

Hurts me seeing Matsuyama in the lead !!! Backed him more times through the summer and he couldnt buy a putt.

THE TOP 50 OWGR qualified for the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai (Rors beats Hideki) so that leaves Chris Kirk #74 as the highest ranked player in this farmers field.

BACK AGAIN TO the gently rolling parkland of Sheshan International Golf Club, in Songjiang a satellite city almost 40km west of Shanghai for the 2017 WGC HSBC Champions. Only a field of 78 Players (seven Chinese) boasts 18 of the top 25 in the world rankings.

A very very exclusive Private Club with water in play on 11 holes, drastic elevation changes (most Chinese courses are flat) with undulating bent grass greens, four Par5's & the drivable Par4 16th where bombers (+ straight hitters) have a significant advantage as the course was toughened in 2014 & 2015. (note shorter hitters can feature - but not often & especially not in recent years).
Only just 800 members who reportedly pay over $USD 400,000 per annum in membership fees (highly restricted and a long waiting list). The back nine plays around a man-made island with 20 villas [i]each large enough to be a clubhouse and reputed to sell for as much as $USD 40 million each![/i]

Ole mate Leish should be offended that Casey is shorter odds than him. The field for this seems to weaken a little each year, more of a sugar free WGC than a WGC. Think one of the form guys on the planet at 22s is a fair bet, not many tickling the fancy this week.

Agree about Leishman rhino... he's one of my two picks. Also fairly obvious but Ross Fisher has finished 3rd and 6th the past two years and has had a great few months.

Only two men, Paul Lawrie and Stewart Cink, have erased larger decifits to go onto to win on TOUR - Lawrie was 10 behind Jean van de Velde in 1999 at the OPEN, while Stewart trailed Ted Purdy by nine in 2004 at Harbour Town according to Golf Channel (perhaps they mean from the start of the final round).

DAY and FINAU were T11 on debut in 2017.

NOREN 45/1 seeking a first PGA TOUR victory & GRILLO 80/1 are near the tops when it comes to putting stats, on these raised & undulating bentgrass greens.

Grillo's ball-striking stats were superb at the CIMB (T2nd) - he finished 1st for Driving Accuracy (85.71%) and sixth for GIR (84.72%).....more of that here please.

struggling to see why Koepka isn't outright fav. been the best player over the last few months.

Bombers course yes but the plodders have gone alright. The year Knox won the next 3 were Kisner, Fisher and Willett. The year Bubba won he beat Tim Clark in a playoff with Iwata, Gmac close behind. Berger second to Matsy. Moli a former winner. Poults a good record so plenty of examples. I think with the wide open fairways they just don't get in trouble at all off the tee and with a good putting week the plodders can easily win.

Cantlay at 55s therefore a bet for me. Nice and straight without being short and one of the better par 5 scoring ratios last season. Best of both worlds kind of thing.

Sheshan International GC - 7,261 yards, par72. A very very exclusive Private Club designed & built by Robin Nelson and Neil Haworth in 2004 (they also did the CIMB Classic's TPC in Kuala Lumpur) - it is tree-lined and features undulating bent grass greens with water in play on 11 holes - the 16th and 17th played over a water-filled quarry. Long-hitters and plotters have all thrived down the years (depending on the wind).

It played tough, I felt like the wind was up on the front nine, which was the back nine (even though scoring on each nine was virtually identical). I made a couple bombs, which was really kind of the story of the day, which kept the momentum up for me through my round. It's the longest golf course I've ever played. Only my second time back (11th last year) but I don't remember a lot of these holes playing nearly this long.”

Great score by REED (-8) considering he's only one under for the par 5's.

A long trek from London to make for Eddie Pepperell (back) and Chris Wood (neck) - both withdrew before the start - and end-up without getting to hit a ball.
The 9th reserve, Jason Scrivener was the only player available and got a valuable start (+3 today for the South African born Aussie).

PEP, the wire-to-wire winner of the British Masters - "Thanks to the brilliant Physio’s here in China, I’m now up walking. Maybe a career low today while laid sideways p1ssing into a bottle because I couldn’t move.....not sure how long I’ll be out for but hoping to be good for Dubai."
6'6" WOOD has a history of neck and back injuries, while history also suggests it is something of an ongoing issue but often clears up with treatment.

Mind you when you see some of the other scores from a lot of our premier Ryder Cuppers you wonder whats in the soup . Fitzpatrick tops Rory's round , 8 over on the day after hitting the overall lead after 4 holes , then Rahm 4 over .  Pieters 8 under on same day , beginning to look like a "jolly" trip .  Certainly days like this would not encourage any decent punters to place their bets .

And with a limited field they cant blame different conditions .

Justin Rose (2018): "I think the par 5s are key this week. No.2, for example, and No.18 is also a pretty narrow tee shot. No.8 is a very intimidating tee shot. So if you can be brave off the tee on the par 5s, I feel like there's quite a bit of an advantage to be had. I think that's why guys like myself have played well on this golf course before because we drive the ball pretty well generally."

Winner Xander Schauffele played the Par 5s (-6) better than anyone else last year. Third-placed Rose was ranked T2 in that category.
Matsuyama also topped the Par 5 stats when winning in 2016.

The first WGC event of the 2019/20 season with a HUGE PURSE of €10.25M !!! .....yet, just 12 of the World's T25 show up....spoiled brats !
€1,845M MIGHT be enough incentive for Shane to take down Rory, or the red hot Hideki. Lowry is also looking to close in on Wiesberger and Rahmbo at the top of the Race To Dubai standings.

Other European Tour members are also jockeying for positions in the Race to Dubai, (btw HORSCHEL is #54 on RtD) while a few others, the likes of Finau, Reed, Reavie, Kisner, Phil (must Trill) & Chucky three sticks, need a very impressive display (or possibly win) for a Presidents Cup wildcard pick (Woodland & Honeymoon Fowler ain't playing).

Horses for Courses comes into play - plenty of course history (+ current form) as this will be the 7th consecutive season at Sheshan, 14th in the last 15 years since 2005 (Mission Hills hosted the event in 2012)….. Look no further than STENSON (33/1 Uni) with the best scoring average around this track, 68.97 - while Rory's is only 71.44 (each made 7 cuts).....that's 2½ shots better per round mate.
Useless stat, but here goes anyhow - All 13 course winners have been within 4-shots and inside the T8, with 5 of them leading/co-leader, after 36 holes. 5-of-the-last-9 winners and 7-of-the-13 have been in front after Rd.3. Only one winner, Phil in 2009, has been any further back than FOUR after Rd.1. (tied for ninth and 5 back).
