This marks the 68th Classic edition since 1938 and the 11th from this course at TPC Louisiana, Avondale, LA. - Just about 15 miles from Downtown New Orleans - Another standard Par72 track from Pete Dye (2003) again this week and expect another birdie fest while singing the Mississippi Blues on Sunday night.

This week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans marks one of the final two opportunities for players not already eligible for THE PLAYERS Championship to earn a spot in the field at TPC Sawgrass in 15 days time. There are three ways a player can become eligible - move inside the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), move inside the top 10 in the FedEx Cup standings or WIN a PGA Tour event asap.

Previous 11 winners and some following year results to note...

2005: Tim Petrovic -13 in a playoff from Jimmy Driscoll.
2006 Chris Couch -19 (at English Turn G&CC after the Aug ’05 Hurricane Katrina hit)
2007: Nick Watney -15 (2008 Watney: T42)

2008: Andres Romero -13 (2009 Romero: DQ)
2009: Jerry Kelly -14 (2010 Kelly: T67)
2010: Jason Bohn -18 (2011 Bohn: T67)

2011: Bubba Watson -15 in playoff from Webb Simpson. (2012 Watson: T18)
2012: Jason Dufner -20 in playoff from Els. Tournament record (2013 Dufner: T42)
2013: Billy Horschel -20 equals the record (2014 Horschel: MC)

2014: Seung-Yul Noh -19  (2015 Seung-Yul Noh W/D)
2015 Justin Rose -22 (266) New Tournament record (69,66,65,66) by one shot from Cameron Tringale (wonder where will the ‘Zurich sponsored’ ROSE finish in 2016 ? defending WINNER - A sponsor’s dream – his last four at TPC Louisiana have yielded T10-T15-T8-1 and 60-under-par - 28 rounds here with 22 under par and 15 rounds in the 60's for Justin @8/1.

One of the easier layouts on the PGA Tour with SEVEN first-time PGA TOUR winners in 11 events on this course, including three of the last four where no defending champion has ever finished better than T18 the following year here.

It really is about time for the young guns to moonshine ! The winner should be a rising star, a young ball-striker going for his first win on TOUR in a piss poor field with only three of the T10 in the OWGR to leapfrog moving up the leaderboard on Saturday. The Aussie Day #1, Tricky Rickie #5 (MC last year) & that 'smug South African' Rose #10 should not be of any concern to the likes of Daniel Berger 25/1, Smylie Kaufman 40/1 or 60/1 shots Patton Kizzire & Cameron Tringale.....Also going with Horsesh8te 20/1 6 places too. (Callit - 22’s, 7pls with that Piss Poor crowd - for €3.74 max - is HUGE Whoops ).

DAY at 5’s is too short - my advice fwiw is to wait ‘till his 5or6 back on Friday then snap like those gators on the course. Remember Rose, the highest-ranked player in the field was 14 shots behind at one point in his second round last year, then birdied six of his last 11 holes for a 67 to sit just outside the top 10.

Another PLAYOFF here come Sunday night @7/2 SJ will be good enough for me and my Bobby McGee tyvvm.

THE WEATHER may upset things again - Mostly cloudy with a heavy thunderstorm; storms may bring torrential downpours and damaging winds tonite so maybe hold on all bets. ©CMiyc Devil

As I said in the opening post...The winner should be a rising star, a young ball-striker going for his first win on TOUR in a piss poor field

A second shot course where birdies are easily available, but equally keeping your card clean is vitally important - A hot putter is still the shortcut to success in on the bayou - Brian was a flawless 44-for-44 from inside 10 feet this week. Stuard vaults up the FedEx Cup standings from 184th to 38th.

If we look at the winners list since 2005 it's apparent that all were experienced professionals (Noh, Horschel and Watney were in their 3rd season on Tour when capturing their maiden Tour title here) however over 70% of the T3 finishers had never won on the PGA Tour or had achieved only single career victories.
Admittedly, not many would have picked 33yo Stuard - turned pro in 2005, worth the wait ! - see him next at The Players.

ONE TO WATCH: Chris Kirk: 4-time PGA Tour with wins at Annandale (2011), Sea Island (2013), TPC Boston (2014) and Colonial (2015) - turns 31 on the 8th May, has 2 wins on Bermuda grass greens and 2 on Bent grass putting surfaces highlighting his ability to play on all surfaces.

Each week Chris is looking more and more comfortable with the PXG clubs and the results are following as he is starting to build some momentum with a personal best 12th at Bay Hill, only lost out to Rory in the last 8 at the Match Play after wins against Grace (twice), Lingmerth and Haas, followed by another personal best 23rd at Hilton Head with improved ball-striking and putting stats. Kirk is T-23 or better in his last four non-majors and circled 19 birdies last week at a difficult Valero (T-13) followed by 17 birdies this week (2 bogeys and a double didn't help in finishing T5). An all-rounder warming to the task right now, he has shown enough across Dye tracks (at Crooked Stick and TPC Sawgrass) to suggest he could be a factor at The Players.

Goodbye Joe me gotta go me oh my oh -

The Jostling for partners has already begun in the NEW TEAM FORMAT for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans 2017.

In one of the most significant changes to the regular TOUR schedule in some time we now get a full-field TEAM EVENT in at TPC Louisiana, in the middle of the season on April 27-30, for FedEx Cup points, official money and win exemptions.

And to kick it off we already know of some high profile teams with World No.1 Jason Day set to team up with Rickie Fowler.
And the gold and silver Olympic medallists in Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson are also suiting up. In six appearances as a team together in the Ryder Cup the European major winners hold a 4-2-0 record.

We have seen the growth of popularity with the biennial team competitions like The Presidents Cup, Ryder Cup and World Cup and the excitement that they produce. We believe the fans will love to see this sort of competition as a regular part of our season.” - Andy Pazder, Chief of Operations for the PGA TOUR.

The new 72-hole stroke play format will feature Foursomes (alternate shot) during the first and third rounds and Four-Ball (best ball) during the second and fourth rounds. The starting field will consist of 80 teams (160 players). Each of the top available players from the PGA TOUR Priority Rankings who commits to the tournament will choose his partner, who in turn must have PGA TOUR status unless he is chosen as a tournament sponsor exemption. Following the conclusion of the second round, there will be a cut to the low 35 teams and ties at the 35th position. In case of a tie after 72 holes, there will be a sudden-death playoff using the Four-Ball format. FedExCup points and prize money will be awarded to teams making the cut based on combining every two positions from the distribution table for a standard TOUR event, with each team member receiving an equal share.

So how are players picking their partners? Is it mostly friends? Or strategy? Who else can we expect in the field. “I think that a choice of partner in team golf is obviously important because if you have a good camaraderie in your team then good things happen. You don’t necessarily even have to play the best in team golf if you have great chemistry,” former PGA Championship winner and eager participant Keegan Bradley said.
Bradley has revealed he intends to play with Brendan Steele, with whom he paired to win the Franklin Templeton Shootout, the unofficial team event hosted by Greg Norman in 2011. Keegan Bradley and Brendan Steele teamed up to win the Franklin Templeton Shootout in 2011. “This has serious implications. This has world ranking points, winner’s exemptions and winning this tournament could quite easily change your career. It gets you into majors and invitational’s and other big events and then who knows what can happen.”

Could we see other big name teams commit? Who would you want to see? Imagine Rory McIlroy with someone like Dustin Johnson. Or Tiger Woods with anyone. Or Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed. Or veterans like Jim Furyk and Zach Johnson trying to take down the youngsters. It is clear as we await confirmation of other teams the tournament is already becoming a headliner and a must watch. Bring it on.
Report Catch Me ifyoucan April 20, 2017 3:43 PM BST
Other teams are Rickie Fowler-Jason Day; Justin Rose-Henrik Stenson; Bubba Watson-J.B. Holmes; Justin Thomas-Bud Cauley; Daniel Berger-Thomas Pieters.

How 'bout this duo...

JB Holmes and Bubba Watson are arguably the two longest hitters on the PGA Tour. Holmes ranks first in driving distance (all drives) while Watson ranks third (he's obviously been taking it easy this season). One also happens to be a righty while the other is a lefty, which means they can do something like this:

Looks a really interesting tournament. I like to assess where the 'chemistry' may be; particularly those that know each others games.

Rose/Stenson is an obvious choice @ 7/1 and have an excellent Ryder Cup record together. They are both in the very elite list of ball striking and; crucially, average putters (like these two) tend to putt better in a pairs format. In terms of synergy and ability they  look the pick of the paddock.

Grace/Oosty @ 16/1 know each others games inside out and Grace comes here starting to look like getting back to his best. Oosty is a really streaky player who makes lots of birdies with the odd card wrecker; his game is ideal for the fourballs.

Cejka/Kjeldson - @ 100/1 Europeans love team events and I can see these two gritty competitors giving followers a good run for their money. Expect them to be up there with the best on foursomes and hope they can fire enough birdies between them to keep it competitive in the fourballs.

Fernandez Castano/Flores - @ 200/1 they make some outside appeal. Castano hinted at a return to form last time out and Flores is an inconsistent but, crucially, a long hitter who makes a lot of birdies. In the recent Peurto Rico Open he made the 2nd most birdies of the week. I have a hunch these two could combine well if avoiding too much damage in the foursomes.

Given the rewards for winning a PGA Tour event I'm amazed how many good players have hampered themselves with inferior partners.  Suggests a few are in town to have a laugh on Bourbon Street and play golf with a buddy.  Beyond the top few pairs of consistent performers a tough one to bet on.

Busted flat in Baton Rouge, waiting for a train, And I’s feeling nearly as faded as my jeans. Bobby thumbed a diesel down just before it rained, It rode us all the way to New Orleans.....for two rounds of Four-ball better ball and two rounds of Foursomes (alternate shots) in this two-man team event.

Pieters, Thomas 27(Berger, Daniel 37) 18/1......ffs that 18's didn't last long...someone **** been reading the forum ! Tongue Out
Dufner, Jason 63(Kizzire, Patton 141).....50/1, winner in 2012 along with Patton's 8th place last year.
Day, Jason 3(Fowler, Rickie 9).....11/2, OWGR highest ranked combo.
Spieth, Jordan 5(Palmer, Ryan 85).....9's, fellow Texans.
Watson, Bubba 24(Holmes, J.B. 43).....16's, Ah, Bubba found someone to play with ! his Presidents Cup Partner.
R:Stenson, Henrik 6(Rose, Justin 8)
*OWGR Ranking in brackets - Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee.

May have been a mistake not to have had a closer look at 23yo Justin Thomas (11) & 27yo Bud Cauley (OWGR up to #126 from #321 last year and the better current form of the two) - A couple of young University of Alabama products who will be up for it and comfortable on the Bermuda greens in New Orleans. They played here before too - JT 12th in 2015 & Bud 11th in 2014. Cauley's been a third-place finisher three times on TOUR and is vying for his first title. Expect Team USA’s Ryder Cup Captain Jimmy Mr.58 Furyk to be close at hand this week while European Ryder Cup Captain Thomas Bjørn watches on from The Great Wall Of China. Devil

Time for Jambalaya & filé gumbo on the Bayou....

Like the Palmer/Spieth combo. Palmer in good form, and teaming up with Jordan gives him his best chance at gracing the winners circle since the whenever the last time he graced the winners circle was. Like Berger and Pieters as well, was hoping for a slightly larger price on them though.

If we look at the winners list since 2005 it's apparent that all were experienced professionals (Noh, Horschel and Watney were in their 3rd season on Tour when capturing their maiden Tour title here, + Stuard in 2016, his one and only win on TOUR), however, over 70% of the T3 finishers had never won on the PGA Tour or had achieved only single career victory.

JUST the SECOND Annual Team Event on this Pete Dye Design par 72 at TPC Louisiana in Avondale, Louisiana.....water is in play on 7 holes off the tee here.

THE 80 two-man teams play Four-Ball best ball on Day 1. then Foursomes in Rd 2. Top 35 and ties make the weekend with golfers playing Four-Ball in R3, and end the week with Foursomes.
The team connections - players just end up together due to having the same agency/management team a lot of the time (Day/Ruffels). For others it's been friends from high school (Reed/Cantlay). Texan's Spieth & Palmer. Thomas/Bud Cauley are former Alabama Uni players - T5 last year. Furyk & Duval - their wives are good friends. Dufner (a past winner) & Perez are both ball-strikers, go figure? Spanish duo Sergio & Rafa. Argentine duo Gomez & Romero.....and as for Bubba & Kuch - don't ask !!!

PGA TOUR - For Jason Day the change to Four-ball on Day 1 was welcome - it was more about the opening round and playing his own ball from the start.
“It gives you a chance to feel your way into the tournament a little, although you will still need to get away to a good start”.

LIKE THE RBC Heritage, we have some players in the field solely to appease their sponsors. The ZURICH boys include Day, Rose, Sergio, Fleetwood, Horschel & Jamie Donaldson.
Day, Fowler & Rose were the Top 3 "ambassadors" in the field last year - all three were early booth slammers on Friday.
Fowler is no longer tied to Zurich - and you guessed it - he's not playing this week. The marquee pairing of Rose & Stenson - missed the cut last year.....just saying.

Last year's event was won by the team of Jonas Blixt and Cameron Smith with a four-day total of -27.....Foresomes/Four-ball 67-62-68-64.
Steele/Lovemark 16's now.....going in again ! CM iyc Devil

The weekend looks like beautiful golfing weather - sunny with highs of 75+ - so no Monday finish this year.
