First, A WORD OF CAUTION.....Expect more late withdrawals tomorrow.
There's always a bit of intrigue in the week before the U.S. Open and this has been the last stop on the PGA Tour before the US Open since the FedEx Cup was introduced in 2007.
The result is that the field can vary from year to year, with numerous withdrawals in the run up to this event also now commonplace.
This WILL the case again this year with players qualifying for Chambers Bay and deciding their schedule is just too much before a MAJOR. With US Open Final Qualifying stage taking place TODAY, one often sees a number of notables bowing out of the SJC.

The FedEx St. Jude Classic dates back to 1958. Dave Hill holds the record for most wins with four, followed by Lee Trevino in 2nd place with three wins. The best golfer to win this event in modern times is Dustin Johnson in 2012. Tiger Woods has never won the St. Jude Classic but his college roommate and teammate from Stanford Notah Begay won here in 2000.

Horschel, Koepka, Berger & Weekley are the course horses to watch this week. HOLD YOUR HORSES ON Steve Stricker atm as he's made the cut for the US Open at Erin Hills in his home state of Wisconsin.
Stricker advanced through 36-hole qualifier in Germanstown & Ridgeway GC's (practically next door to TPC Southwind) so maybe the plan is to stay local and play here.

Jamie Lovemark earned his ticket to Erin Hills as he qualifier in Columbus, Ohio and has decided to pass on the TPC Southwind Classic. Jamie was one of 14 qualifiers - the others being JT Poston, Kokrak, Bud Cauley, Martin Laird, Keegan Bradley, Stewart Cink, Bryson DeChambeau, CT Pan, David Lingmerth, Ted Potter Jr., Peter Uihlein, Scottie Scheffler & Talor Gooch.

Ireland's Padraig Harrington is next on the WD list, but only because of receiving an injury from an amateur player (needed 6 stitches on his arm). "I was hit on the elbow with a practice swing by an amateur I was coaching at an outing. I'll only be out for 12 days or so to let stitches heal. Thankfully nothing was broken,just 6 stitches. I thought it was the end of me playing competitive golf" - said the three time Major winner.

Monday was 36 holes US OPEN Sectional Qualifying so golfers who end up qualifying, swiftly withdraw from the St. Jude Classic. That will change next year when TPC Southwind hosts a WGC event.
I like 80s Lowry to back and lay off for profit in running at some stage.....hopefully. There will be certain deductions due to the withdrawals..

A hint on what to expect can be found in its previous place on the schedule. The St. Jude acted as the warm-up event for the US Open and was set up accordingly. Also note that the last three winners were all ranked in the top five for SG: Off the Tee. Long and straight driving certainly works well here. SG: Tee to Green is clearly a key indicator.

Thomas is officially the defending champion this week, but he is happy for Dustin Johnson to claim that title for his own. DJ won the last professional event held at TPC Southwind, a course where Thomas has never played.
"I would probably call him the defending champion," Thomas said. "I've never played here in my life and he won the tournament here last year. But I don't think it's going to have any impact on who plays better this week. I'm excited to be here. I haven't gone out on the golf course yet. I'm just trying to get over the jet lag. I woke up at like 4:30 this morning, so I think it will probably take a couple of days to get caught up on sleep."

This WGC Tournament began back in 1999 and 18 of the 19 previous editions have taken place at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio – the only other venue to have hosted being Sahalee Country Club in Washington state back in 2003.
Justin Rose at the 2017 WGC-HSBC Champions was the last non-American winner of a WGC - the USA have 29 of the 63 players in the field this week.
