First, A WORD OF CAUTION.....Expect more late withdrawals tomorrow.
There's always a bit of intrigue in the week before the U.S. Open and this has been the last stop on the PGA Tour before the US Open since the FedEx Cup was introduced in 2007.
The result is that the field can vary from year to year, with numerous withdrawals in the run up to this event also now commonplace.
This WILL the case again this year with players qualifying for Chambers Bay and deciding their schedule is just too much before a MAJOR. With US Open Final Qualifying stage taking place TODAY, one often sees a number of notables bowing out of the SJC.
Paul Casey has already withdrawn from this week's FedEx St. Jude Classic. Casey is just the latest, but he's already exempt into the field at Chambers Bay.

As always Dusty the best player in the world when out of contention. Sports psychologist's dream.
Not sure there's enough light for a play-off tonight so could be pretty inconvenient for the guys heading for Oakmont.

The FedEx St. Jude Classic dates back to 1958. Dave Hill holds the record for most wins with four, followed by Lee Trevino in 2nd place with three wins. The best golfer to win this event in modern times is Dustin Johnson in 2012. Tiger Woods has never won the St. Jude Classic but his college roommate and teammate from Stanford Notah Begay won here in 2000.

Tommy Bolt: 'It wasn't me! ... OK, it was me.' Bolt's nickname was "Terrible Tommy" because of his infamous on-course temper. Bolt threw tantrums and he threw clubs, and it was part of the show. And, his reputation established, it was a show. Bolt once observed, "Always throw your clubs ahead of you. That way you don't have to waste energy going back to pick them up."
Tommy won the 1958 US Open, and one year later he lived up to another of his nicknames: "Thunder" Bolt. At the 1959 Memphis Invitational Open (what today is known as the FedEx-St. Jude Classic), Bolt felt a sudden ... intestinal urge. And not one to hold his, ahem, feelings in, Bolt let rip with a mighty wind.
Loud flatulence was, along with club-throwing, something of a habit with Tommy. But this time, tour officials had seen - and heard, and smelled - enough.
Following the round, Bolt was assessed a $250 fine for "conduct unbecoming a professional golfer." Making Tommy Bolt the only golfer in PGA Tour history (as far as anyone knows) penalized for farting.....a gentle pun to the farts on here - ye know who ye are

Horschel, Koepka, Berger & Weekley are the course horses to watch this week. HOLD YOUR HORSES ON Steve Stricker atm as he's made the cut for the US Open at Erin Hills in his home state of Wisconsin.
Stricker advanced through 36-hole qualifier in Germanstown & Ridgeway GC's (practically next door to TPC Southwind) so maybe the plan is to stay local and play here.
The other 8 local qualifiers were Argentina's Andres Romero 400/1, Troy Merritt 275/1, Chez Reavie 160/1, Harris English 80/1, Garrett Osborn 1000/1, Trey Mullinax 400/1, Xander Schauffele 150/1 & Jonathan Randolph 225/1 - all are entered to play here atm.

Jamie Lovemark earned his ticket to Erin Hills as he qualifier in Columbus, Ohio and has decided to pass on the TPC Southwind Classic. Jamie was one of 14 qualifiers - the others being JT Poston, Kokrak, Bud Cauley, Martin Laird, Keegan Bradley, Stewart Cink, Bryson DeChambeau, CT Pan, David Lingmerth, Ted Potter Jr., Peter Uihlein, Scottie Scheffler & Talor Gooch.
THE LIST of pre-tournament WD's just got bigger: Kelly Kraft, Keegan Bradley, Nicholas Thompson, Soren Kjeldsen, Jason Kokrak, CT Pan and you guessed it Steve Stricker. As cautioned keep a close eye on the field this week.

Ireland's Padraig Harrington is next on the WD list, but only because of receiving an injury from an amateur player (needed 6 stitches on his arm). "I was hit on the elbow with a practice swing by an amateur I was coaching at an outing. I'll only be out for 12 days or so to let stitches heal. Thankfully nothing was broken, just 6 stitches. I thought it was the end of me playing competitive golf" - said the three time Major winner.
Season Trends so far: after 30 tournaments of 47 this season.
16 winners were in their 20s, 11 in their 30s and 4 in their 40s.
16 winners had at least one week off prior to their respective wins, 13 winners had a top-10 finish the start prior and 4 had a missed cut (Mackenzie Hughes, Si Woo Kim, Billy Horschel (x4), and last week's 40yo Jason Dufner.
19 of the 28 winners (minus Match Play and team-Zurich) have emerged out of the FINAL group on Sunday.....But 54-hole leaders/co-leaders have failed to convert the last five - the most recent to get across the finish line was Kevin Chappell (Valero TO).

Monday was 36 holes US OPEN Sectional Qualifying so golfers who end up qualifying, swiftly withdraw from the St. Jude Classic. That will change next year when TPC Southwind hosts a WGC event.
I like 80s Lowry to back and lay off for profit in running at some stage.....hopefully. There will be certain deductions due to the withdrawals..

looks like could be a week for the favorites with the top 5 in the betting all looking strong and seeming ready for a good show,Dustin has good form here and is now due a win.
really like Koepka and think he will go close this week and next
missed the start, had a bash at swartzel at generous 27 @ -2 (altho in bunker lol )
i know i will probably end up regretting it like with Web simpson but i am laying off Dustin, atleast this time it is around evens and not 5/2 andDusty was only 7/1 so its a smaller less of green when laying, i juts have a feeling he isnt going to get the job done this week.I think he will go very close next week for sure.

Pathetic.

Another example of there nonsensical policies JTB, pretty or not, she qualifies to give summary because we now must have a token female at every turn in sports reporting..

been impressed with Putnam but wondering if he will be this good on pay day ?
he'll be paired with DJ,today he wasn't
he did play pretty well and DJ is far from a shoo-in
it's down to whether he's intimidated or not
if he's got enough self belief & gets out of the traps quickly
he can defo put some heat on DJ

Dj, joint leader, 1.5.
Korhonen,leads by 6,1.41.
Though Putnam played well but got 2 very very lucky breaks at least, and holed a couple of real long ones, same as before tonight, Dj plays sensibly keeps it in play think he wins costly.

Its DJ to lose now !! world number 1 will be on his mind ...and will pull it off although like to keep Mr P small green

But an UPGRADED STATUS to a WGC-FedEx event for the first time.
.....as we go BACK AGAIN to the familiar TPC Southwind - 22 miles east of Memphis, Tennessee - a 7,250yds, Par 70 which stages the regular-season St. Jude Invitational for the last 30 years.
Who’s playing? ... Well 46 of the World's T50 had signed up....excl Tiger, Moliwood, Ticky Fowler & Wiesberger...
Presume THE CHAMPION GOLFER OF THE YEAR 60/1 shot SHANE LOWRY is making the plane trip later today ???
Last 5 winners.....
2018 (-19, 261) Dustin Johnson (won it in 2012 & 10/1 fav this week too)
2017 (-10, 270) Daniel Berger
2016 (-13, 267) Daniel Berger
2015 (-13, 267) Fabian Gomez
2014 (-10, 270) Ben Crane
A key metric is Par4 scoring (as for all Par70 tracks) and longer, accurate, driving also helps, where course form carries more weight than usual.

A hint on what to expect can be found in its previous place on the schedule. The St. Jude acted as the warm-up event for the US Open and was set up accordingly. Also note that the last three winners were all ranked in the top five for SG: Off the Tee. Long and straight driving certainly works well here. SG: Tee to Green is clearly a key indicator.
Dustin Johnson: “I just like the golf course. It plays tough. You know, you got to drive it in the fairway and control your ball coming into the greens and, you know, it just seems like every year the scores are never very low here.
Xander Schauffele 22/1 makes his course debut, third in the US Open on his previous US start, he already has a WGC win to his name having landed last October's HSBC Champions in China. Ranks in the top 15 for both SG: Off the Tee and Tee to Green this season.

AND UNUSAL in that we have TWO Defending Champions (for this one event).
NOT ALL WILL BE SUFFERING FROM JET-LAG like Justin Thomas
Thomas is officially the defending champion this week, but he is happy for Dustin Johnson to claim that title for his own. DJ won the last professional event held at TPC Southwind, a course where Thomas has never played.
"I would probably call him the defending champion," Thomas said. "I've never played here in my life and he won the tournament here last year. But I don't think it's going to have any impact on who plays better this week. I'm excited to be here. I haven't gone out on the golf course yet. I'm just trying to get over the jet lag. I woke up at like 4:30 this morning, so I think it will probably take a couple of days to get caught up on sleep."

Matty WOLFF, NA and TWAY are just 3 of the 9 players that did NOT travel to Ireland last week
Adam Long, Max Homa, Aaron Rai, Kodai Ichihara, Poom Saksansin & Philip Eriksson the others without jet lag worries
Thomas won the event at Firestone last year when it was the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

This WGC Tournament began back in 1999 and 18 of the 19 previous editions have taken place at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio – the only other venue to have hosted being Sahalee Country Club in Washington state back in 2003.
Justin Rose at the 2017 WGC-HSBC Champions was the last non-American winner of a WGC - the USA have 29 of the 63 players in the field this week.
Ignore those tee times taken from Oddschecker.....they're incorrect
17.20 KICK OFF.....best viewing time for the high-stool brigade
