Pretty hard tournament this one, not a fan of shootouts and birdie fests to be honest as I always find them harder to call. Think this could be the type of tournament someone like Snedeker makes a bit of a comeback to the big time.

Beautiful setup PGA West, would make an amazing destination for a golf holiday with the 6 courses plus the others in and around La Quinta. Doesn't challenge the pros much though, reckon it's the worst event on tour with the pro am bit thrown in. Only Holly Sonders in a tight fitting skirt makes it watchable.
Agree about Sneds (Phil too), but hard to tell, no better equaliser than a powder puff course. Roughies have ruled in recent years. |

There don't appear to be any hard and fast rules when attempting to find the winner of the Humana Challenge although younger players who have coped well with pro-am formats before, who play well early season and who have form around low scoring courses such as Annandale often do well here. In the end this left me with a very long long list but I have whittled it down to five.
Some of you may recall me putting up Scott Stallings here two years ago at a triple figure price and watch him blow a five shot lead - so it is difficult to go for him again but I feel he is simply too big a price this week. He won for the third time on tour a year ago in California and is well worth having onside this week £30 ew 90/1 + £15 100 Betfair. Chesson Hadley didn't play well here last year but that is not a prerequisite. He went on to win his maiden PGA title on a resort course and he had also been 5th at Summerlin. Add in a top ten at the Pebble Beach pro-am and a 3rd on the Web.com pro-am and I think he may well have a good chance this week - especially as he has been practicing here since last Friday. £25 160 Betfair + £25 25/1 top 5 including ties Sportingbet Carlos Ortiz seems to be a name quickly forgotten having won three times on the Web.com tour last season. He has had a solid start to his PGA tour career including a top ten in front of his home crowd in Mexico which must have been tough. Don't worry about the missed cut in Hawaii that course wouldn't have suited him but it would have blown away the cobwebs. £25 win 350 average Betfair + £30 top 10 22/1 Nicholas Thompson did make the cut last week in Hawaii with only a poor final round stopping him from producing a good finish but it was only the second time he had made the cut and when he did in 2013 he came here and finished 6th. Other notable finishes in his career include a 7th at Pebble Beach and 4th at Annandale so in theory this week presents him with one of his best chances although I must admit I prefer the top ten angle with him £20 win 270 average + £30 top 10 16/1 Last pick is way out from left field - Jim Renner who is basically hit or miss. In just 53 PGA tour starts he does actually have three top 5's to his name - at Montreux and interestingly Annandale and last year when 2nd at Pebble Beach. He was suffering from an elbow injury for much of last year after that top finish but apparently is fit again £10 ew 1000/1 + £10 70 top ten and £12 1000 on Betfair |

Max Homa 290 seems massive won a pro am on the web.com 6th last week and born and raised in California plus had a top 10 in California before on tour 2013 frys backed him win top 5 top 10 and top 20
Also backed stallings and Piercy |

a little bit ew 40s Brendan todd for me

Speculative e/w shots for me this week on Todd, Tringale, Ishikawa and Swafford. I have a feeling it could well be a shock winner at a three figure price this week. It's just finding the one...
By:
i'll have a throw at the stumps this week... J.Leonard, Chad Collins, Harris English, Scott Piercy...Brendon Todd. Something for the battler.

A couple of small plays on Steele and Laird to start. Both go well in the desert and can light it up which suits the event.

***We have a 59 ALERT***
Mark Wilson -8 thru 9 |
By:
Seen some scoring corrections on that course so far, would maybe want some visual confirmation.
By:
And there you go. Eagle at 16 was totally made up.
By:
bogey at 15 too, was only 31 out not 28
good job these scorers cant use betfair |

REED and KUCHAR the pick on day 1. The others in front wont have the bottle. maybe Francesco. pretty consistent player, rarely misses a cut. Nice little earn for those who got on at 125 so far..
By:
Reed will make an interesting trivia question if he gets up. When was the last time 2 different players successfully defended titles in successive weeks at the same venues? One for Mighty Whites and the muppet moans I reckon...
By:
After winning in Hawaii, Reed was asked what his goals for the season were - "to be a multiple winner'
Looks like he has a reasonable chance of doing it in his first two events. A long way to go of course, but nicely positioned after R1 |

After making a wee profit on Jimmy Walker last Week I have had 2 small bets here so far. Webb and Harris respectively @ 36 and 28/1. Wont get rich on my stake but I am just edging baack to interest on the tour and looking forward to seeing how Shane Lowry shapes in his first top50 season. Good luck to all.@Quincy....have not heard from you hope you are ok.

Scoring has Palmer -7 through 7 on the back 9 at NP, although that story sounds a bit familiar.
By:
Now allegedly -9 through 9. Might be too scared to mention it in case he has Wilson's scorer with him.
By:
comms just confirmed and showed vision of him getting some love from playing partners. Although they would be going off the same information I suppose.
By:
Yesterday the radio had a guy join up with Wilson and even he didn't know the score was wrong because the walking scorer had it wrong. This one seems more believable, though, I'm sure between TV and radio they'll have someone going to check to save more embarrassment.
By:
Palmer the kind of player you expect to go on such a run, far more than Wilson anyway.
By:
Now got him at -10 thru 10. 58 watch.
By:
From 120 to 6.4 in 10 holes. Not bad.
By:
Can't be right ,par par start ,no way.
By:
Just made bogey
By:
Maybe only a 59 then.
By:
Another bogey. Wonder if they're real or if it's a cheeky way of fixing earlier mistakes.
By:
Watney just got corrected, can't trust the NP scoring. Palmer could be anything.
By:
Son of a gun moving along nicely, loves this place.
Palmer on the comeback trail, back to -9 for the day. |
