Ever laid a 1.01 loser or backed a 1000 winner?

someone of the golf thread said spare a thought for the 1.01 layers - why ? I admire them for putting their money where their mouth is.

yes im half asleep - still no sympathy backing at 1.01 - there are so many that seem to get beat, i am not on here everyday but sometimes over a weekend I see 1 or 2 get gubbed, but over a week I just don't know hiw many, if it is the same people backing them they must surely be losing.

Not quiet but lost heavily on Phil in the Scottish open he won prior to his open championship in 2013.

My biggest price winner in 14 years on the fair was a sweet 590/1 on Chez Reavie on the PGA Tour which amounted to almost six grand profit.
The highs and lows of it , luckily the highs outweigh the lows in  cash terms.

Imagine I have layed a fair few 1000 poke winners over the years.Part of the game.Simon Khan springs to mind.Remember backing Tom Watson at 1000 the year he went 1.3 in Cink's Open.Backed hundreds if not thousands of 1000 pokes ,can't resist.Never hang on to them long enough to remember the winners but there must be a few.

I definitely laid Garrigus at 1.01 when he had his 18th hole meltdown at the Fedex St Jude a few years ago.  Also Chez Reavie when he butchered 18 in the playoff event that Webb Simpson won but can't remember if that was a 1.01?

Another 1.01 I laid was Jimenez at the French Open when he dumped a 7 iron into the drink on 18 but in true Miguel style he rallied to win a 3 man playoff.

That's it really, in over 12 years of betting golf on here.  It really is hard to get one beaten nowadays as they have to be almost over the line to go 1.01 (markets were far more volatile in the early days and you'd see more 1.01s beaten across a range of sports).

I remember Reavie, I laid him too before the wedge he flew to the rough, wasn't a 1.01 though. NBA you see a decent share of 1.01s get done. Saw a game recently - a month or so ago, Spurs got gubbed twice in the same game at home to Portland. 1.01 in regular time, then went 1.04 in OT and lost in double OT. Wonder if the original 1.01 backers topped up at 1.04 in OT

I have laid a fair few 1.01's who went on to lose, only trouble is I have always backed them back for about 1 tick profit.
There seems to be a spell of 1.01 losing at present, think I have worked on 19 events so far this year, 15 snooker matches, 3 golf and 1 NFL, and there has been 4 or 5 maybe even 6 1.01 losers in just those.
Wish I had made a new year resolution to just waste / invest a tenner on all 1.01's this year, rest of the year would already be covered.
You would think that as I first read this thread last night during the NFL and Green Bay where 1.01, which I thought seemed rather short I might have had a go, but no, not even £2.

The problem nowadays Trebor is the bots get 1.01 lays up very early, so if you do want to lay 1.01 you're going to be behind about 20k in the queue which vastly reduces the chances of it being a good value lay.

It gets headlines when they lose but as an overall strategy you're still probably better off backing them.

wonder if those who had enough on kaymer to scatter a few bets around when they were all a 1000,covered some but left stal out been a rookie etc,

KR ... yeh I would guess my 1.01 lays may not show a profit coz I back them back too soon, but I would have thought 1.01 lays with no backing back on golf and snooker would show a profit, might not on many other sports, but golf and snooker both give the player time to think about what can go wrong, then it can become very hard to get over the line.
There must be more than one 1.01 beat each year on golf, even 2 every 3 years would be about break even.
But as you say you may not get on every one because of the money ahead of you

Have laid a few horses in my time before the jump that have matched at 1000-1 in the run and got home. See horses all the time match at 1.01 and get beat, especially where say #1 is scratched and #2 powers away with the win... seems some unfortunate punters load up on #3 by mistake, it being 2nd in the list.

I backed a horse in a harness race recently for a stupid amount of money. Had odds up to lay at 1.01 to get back my stake so I could keep backing horses without having to wait for the market to settle. Matched about 38 bucks before it galloped in sight of the winning post and ran last.

Never on the golf though. Had Johnson Wagner last year at 1000-1 in a tournament where he got into odds on but lost. I made a few bucks but there'd have to be punters around making millions on it.
