whoever wanted to back fowler at 230 before rorys shot was being optimistic. i tried laying it but the prices kept moving. got about 12 quid layed up to 300, crazy price should have been 500+

Not a classic by my means. Unless the weather intervenes the vast majority of the Open venues are just miles too easy these days. I expect the winner will be 20 under next year at St Andrews - basically a pitch and putt.
If there's no wind at St Andrews it will be even more of a putting contest than this year

me,too, hh - always strikes me as very genuine - you do just wonder if he has the competitive edge to get the job done but he shot 66 today, albeit the bunker shot on 15 was a real aberration.
I like him he's passionate and an incredible shot maker. Just think he might have missed his chance

hard to say how many he will win. When he is good he wins just a question of whether he gets the consistency and obviously needs longevity.
His confidence must have soared after this week. No double bogeys which have ruined his rounds even when he is struggling he makes birdies. His driving is superb.

scotts only won one major. i dont see that mcilrory is any better than scott.

i wouldnt be at all surprised if he never wins one again, never mind 1 in 4.
harrington won 3 majors between 2007 and 2008, im sure people back then were talking about how good he was, never done sh1t since. theres a lot of good players out there, mcilrory is just one of em. the other week kaymer was unbeatable, this week hes been rubbish. it happens.

Your missing a crucial point that nearly all the greatest talents in most sports showed it at a very early age. Thats what makes me think Rory will prove different class to Adam Scott et al.
Sideshow when you can drive it as long as and straight as McIlroy you will always have a chance.

Correct -and his putting from all distances has improved considerably from what it was about 18/24 months ago.
Add in his formidable scrambling ability and you have pretty much the complete player -now approaching his prime ten year stretch.
He can be as good as he wants to be -if he has the relentless drive and focus that the true greats have.

Let's revisit this thread in 12 months (and again every next 12 months) when he's one at least 1 of the next 4 majors and so on. I will then take the plaudits.
Well, that's the golf losses sorted in three races at Cartmel, May's Boy @ 6/1 (won), Cool Baranca (non runner), Galley Slave (fell) and Makellys Blackpool @ 6/1 (won) Best Odds Guaranteed. 5 EW Doubles and 2 EW Trebles. Dividing all future golf bets by ten.

1) The biggest stat of the week is that Rory McIlroy is now three-quarters of the way to the career Grand Slam, having won The Open Championship, the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship. McIlroy will look to complete the Grand Slam in 2015 at Augusta National, where his record is not as good as you might think. Despite famously holding a one-shot lead with nine holes to play in 2011, he only has one top 10, a T8 finish this year.
2) Speaking of McIlroy’s three majors: Sunday’s win makes him the third-youngest player to become a three-time major champion (at least since 1934 when the first Masters Tournament was played). At age 25, Rory was slower than only Jack Nicklaus (23) and Tiger Woods (24).
Just for fun: To get to No. 3, it took Rory 24 major starts, Tiger 20 and Jack 16.

Great post skiwiz. Another point about the really great players is their consistency. Jack and Tiger always seemed to be there or thereabouts in virtually every Major year after year. Its more than possible Rory could do the same. Its a tragedy whats happened to Tiger with his off course nonsense which has ruined his legacy but i dont think we have seen the last of Tiger in Majors, not by a long way.
One of my favourite Tiger stats ( can the Jack fans top it ? ),forget the 4 consecutive top 5 finishes ,even top 3 finishes .How about winning 4 consecutive majors.
I am a huge Tiger fan but nobody can question Jack Nickalas's record - simply amazing
winning four in a row is a fantastic achievement, the fact being placed in four in a row merits a comment tells you that
