Craig Lee is a player I had earmarked as someone who would break out and get their first European Tour victory after watching his valiant effort at Crans-sur-Sierre last year when losing in a playoff to Thomas Bjorn in the Omega European Masters. He followed a sublime round of 61 on moving day with a bogey-free 67 on Sunday where he was inches away from making a birdie on his 72nd hole to claim the victory on a similarly tight track to this one. I highly suspect this could be the week he finally gets over the line on a course he has finished in a tie for 14th and 9th place in his two and only tries. It's no surprise the Scotsman plays well here as he'll be no stranger to the gusting winds you often find at this event and interesting enough his two most high profile wins on the various mini tours he's played came at the Sueno Resort in Turkey where he won back to back events on courses with heavily undulating fairways mimicing the test he'll face here at the tricky Golf du Palais Royal.

On to this season and Lee nearly took some major scalps when claiming the 54 hole lead with some near flawless golf at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship before faltering with a 77 on Sunday. It was more of the same two starts ago when Lee took the 36 hole lead into the weekend at the Africa Open before finishing in a tie for 49th place. This tells me his game is in good shape and I believe he can string 4 good rounds together to hopefully improve further the great record British players have in this event having produced the winner 3 of the 4 times it has been held. 70/1 seems a very fair price for him to do so.

Adding Alejandro Canizares mainly from a value standpoint, shocked to see him at 80/1 here after some stellar play over the past few months. He's another player who's best results last season came on courses were accuracy was at a premium with top 5 finishes at both Crans-sur-Sierre and Wentworth. Canizares is a model of consistency having not missed a cut since that 4th place finish in Crans finishing in the top 25 in 7 of the 14 aforementioned events. His form here at Golf du Palais Royal while not stellar is once again consistent making the cut on all his 4 previous starts and recording his best finish of tied 32nd last year. His play over the weekend has improved dramatically over recent months, and after numerous good performances hopefully he's finally getting the belief he can record his 2nd European Tour win. The performance that should give him most confidence is a recent tie for 5th place at the lucrative Qatar Masters where he battled back from a 1 over par 73 on Saturday to shoot 65 on Sunday to claw himself back up the leaderboard.

Not a market I delve into often but Damien McGrane makes plenty of appeal to repeat his feat of 2012 and lead here after the first round. McGrane doesn't pop up often these days but when he does it's often on courses he has an affinity for as proven when finishing in a tie for 3rd at the KLM Open at the back end of last season (tied for 2nd after a round one 65) where he has numerous previous good finishes. McGrane has been a quick starter this season with opening rounds of 66-66-67 in his previous 3 events before taking on a golf course that was too long for him at the Tshwane Open on his last start.

John Hahn, current form of Tied 3rd, Tied 66th, Tied 116th, Tied 6th in his last 4 starts show he is bang on the form having just qualified for the tour via the q school. He is a 25 year old american player who is trying to emulate the success of Peter Uhlein and Brooks Koepka. What has drawn me most to him this week is that he shot a second round 10 under 61 in his last outing which shows he isn't afraid to make a shed load of birdies and obviously is feeling great about his game. 80/1 looked a bit generous to me in this weak field and just coming off a top 3 finish.

Carlos Del Moral, current form of 4th, tied 179th, tied 67th, tied 13th. The 4th place finish last week gave him his biggest cheque of his career so far so he will be full of confidence and I can't see any reason that he shouldn't contend again this week. I managed to get £20 each way matched when Bet365 put their prices up first but unfortunately they wouldn't let me have anymore on and I had to take the 125/1 available but I still think this gives you a great price for another top 5 finish.

Johan Carlsson, immediate current form is poor hence his price of 125/1 but if you look past his last 3 weeks then he was playing great, Tied 69th, Tied 140th, Tied 80th, Tied 16th, 7th, Tied 18th, Tied 37th, Tied 7th. He won the lucrative Kazackstaan Open back in September 2013, so if he can find some form again I would expect him to win on the main tour this year, and probably a weaker field event such as this week.

Andrea Pavan, Current form terrible he has missed his last 5 cuts which is odd given that he won the challenge tour money list last year, and now has 4 challenge tour victories, he obviously is a classy player and will come back into form at some point, and at 250/1 its worth a few quid this week.

Kristoffer Broberg, current form is okay of tied 24th, tied 140th, tied 29th, tied 28th, as I mentioned 2 weeks ago about this guy he set records on the challenge tour 2 years ago and has yet to win on the european tour but I'm not willing to give up on him yet. 200/1 is a really good price.

Thomas Pieters
, This guy is a young belgium player who got his card through q school, also played last year on the european tour but yet to do anything decent really, but he is still very young and anytime he's 500/1 in a weak field I think he's worth backing. Very small bet on him...

Use to back Rhys Davies blindly so with positives over him here I'll take him aboard along with Bhullar and Kieffer.

Cheers fellas, glad he was in a position where I could laugh at the small predicament he found himself in on the last. Cracking performance.
