Has anyone played Dursley Park, Manchester, or Dalmahoy, Edinburgh? Also playing the Old Course, St Andrews and one of the other St Andrews courses in early April.

Any advice, tips for any of these courses. Thanks in advance.

get a caddy at the old course, well worth the money, as you can't see the vast majority of the bunkers, if you've got a choice with the other st andrews course, move heaven and earth to make it kingsbarns.

Dalmahoy is in a nice spot with good views, and not a bad layout. But they've had massive problems with their greens. I last played in August and they were absolutely appalling. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news Sad

Dress warm for St.Andrews. Played the Jubilee course there - decent course but it must have dropped 15 degrees c in the 4 hours playing there.

good views?

Mexicano's suggestion of Kingsbarns is spot on, but if you are limited to Links trust properties, the Castle is a great course (not everyone agrees with that, usually people who like flat, easy courses). If you are further restricted to courses in the town, either the New or the Jubilee are challenging. The Jubilee bites your bum at the end - you think you are holding on then the 15th and 16th get their teeth out leaving you too demoralised to do anything on the final 2 - and the 17th is about 2 clubs longer than it looks!

i played the castle course a couple of years ago, fantastic layout, but the greens were ridiculous, they said they were going to dig em up to make them more playable, did they do that?

Thanks for your thoughts lads, we are playing the new course as the other option at St Andrews.

Kingsbarns is far and away the best course I have played. Never be a major venue as too easy, but for casual golfer you cant beat. However price tag to match
Report bigH • February 23, 2014 9:06 PM GMT
Agreed Kingsbarns is pricey but you get treated like a king for the day.

Unlike Carnoustie, where for roughly the same price you get treated like they don't want you there in the first place

big h

carnoustie seems like a red carpet job compared to muirfield.

you have to send the hacap certs and applications well in advance, and when you turn up they treat you like you've come to inspect the drainsLaugh

Report bigH • February 24, 2014 10:58 PM GMT
yes had heard that Muirfield is not that welcoming, and even worse if you are not a scot.

you're right money, good base for a short trip as well, nth berwick, muirfield, and archerfield, three great courses all within striking distance of each other.

Excited

1st time we went,we were worried because we forged our handicaps, all play about 80s

then ahead grouping,German aired his tee shot 3 times
Report bigH • March 3, 2014 9:22 AM GMT
Germans!!

I played at Penina on the algarve a few years ago

Play on the front 9 was really slow, took 2 hours to play 6 holes.

When we approached the turn we found out why

Going down the 11th was a 4-ball with two of the blokes wearing vests, swimming trunks and flip-flops. Germans.
