Greatest athlete of all time.
Report HeinzGuderian July 21, 2013 8:29 AM BST
Agreed.
Best of luck today Mr. Nicklaus. Cool

Tiger is a legend.

Moresomes on a Saturday night , major wins on a Sunday.

Hope he booked a trio of lovelies last night to get himself in the right frame of mind to lift the claret jug.

Go get them Tiger.
Report Puggy4 July 21, 2013 8:36 AM BST
not correct to call a guy that swings a golf club as the greatest athlete of all time, im sure tour de france riders, triathlon competitors. track & field competitors would have a different view.Pumping iron in the gym does not make someone the greatest athlete of all time.
Report Over2.5 July 21, 2013 8:41 AM BST
Theres are very few who even come close to woods... enjoy while he is here cause you will never see his like again
Report Deplasterer July 21, 2013 8:44 AM BST
I'm starting to come round to woods, must have a new PR man because he was hateful barsteward for years.
Report Puggy4 July 21, 2013 8:45 AM BST
as i said swinging a golf club and walking between shots does not make "the greatest athlete of all time".
Report therhino July 21, 2013 8:47 AM BST
I wanna see him go and get it today. Aggressive, play to win, don't play not to lose. Big difference between those approaches. Make a putt then pump the fist and let out a roar, remind the others of who you are Tiger... If he is gonna get to 19, or even 18, I sorta feel he needs to nail down 15 quick, can't keep knocking on the door, break the door down. Then floodgates may open.
Report Over2.5 July 21, 2013 8:48 AM BST
name me a better sportsman ??
Report aberdonia July 21, 2013 8:48 AM BST
Woods always praises the shots of his opponents and from what i can see is liked by many of his fellow pro's.

And he is a winner.

He has played great this week.  Dont know how well the likes of Scott and Mahan have been playing as we have not seen any of their long game all week.

He must be the most likely winner, however links courses play to luck, one shot bounces and only rolls 10 foot whilst another "perfect" shot rolls through the green.

Can be a lottery, i guess it will boil down to who gets lucky with a couple of 20 footers that drop.
Report Commodus July 21, 2013 8:48 AM BST
I already said he is the greatest athlete of all time, now shut up and enjoy being in the era of such greatness. Privileged.

Michael Jordan
Report aberdonia July 21, 2013 8:51 AM BST
Yes, your right, he is only the world no 1, top of the fed ex points list and 4 times winners this year.

He is gone at the game.
Report Over2.5 July 21, 2013 8:51 AM BST
^^ incorrect.... the closest to woods is federer and hes still miles off

Federer... rubbish. Not even the greatest tennis player. The greatest ever in their sport must have a winning record against all their contemporaries. Nadal has smashed him head to head. So Fed is out. Jordan was amazing, a pure winning machine with a will to win every bit the same as Tiger.

Think Jordan could win an nba ring with a broken bone in his leg?

Tiger is the greatest athlete ever by miles.
Report aberdonia July 21, 2013 8:58 AM BST
If snooker was a sport Stephen Hendry would be the one.

I won fortunes backing him.

He had what every great needs "bottle".

He has his version of this, commonly referred to as 'the flu game'

And playing basketball with a broken bone in your leg is not exactly feasible

Greatest golfer of all time by a mile in my view. Nicklaus won majors in a far less competitive time. Woods has won 25% of tournies he has entered on the PGA tour which is simply phenomenal. Has a will to win I've never seen in golf and his performance at Pebble Beach to win by 15 was as close to golfing perfection as you will ever see.

Always hard to gauge greatest athlete as all other sports are so different but for impact on his chosen sport he is unsurpassed. Brought so much money and exposure into the game and without Tiger a lot of these guys would be playing for a lot less cash

Miguel Indurain, see ya lads.

Woods made the mistake of going first to Harmen and then the rest. The golf swing of a genius like Woods is a gift,
and it is very dangerous to tinker with. Woods has known for a long time now that things are not the same as when he was
19..and he will never get it back. Such a shame, Harmon and the rest have the destruction of what would easily have been
the greatest ever [player. Woods has not even been in the top 10 for the last 15 years
Report The Mod father July 21, 2013 12:29 PM BST
It took the great Jack Nicklaus 700 events to get to 70 wins on the PGA Tour

It took Tiger Woods about 280 or so

Just think about the one stat for one moment, its a absolutely phenomenal record.

The 15 shot win at the 2000 us open is the single greatest sporting achievement even. His overall win record is something like 27% even with all his problems

Even a 70% Tiger Woods now is still the best player in the world by some distance

The bloke is/was a utter sporting genius

When in his pomp he was the ultimate sportsman, a absolute relentless winning machine in what is the most competitive sport in the world

Enjoy him while you can, we will never see the likes again
Report happyhibee July 21, 2013 12:30 PM BST
In his prime he holed more clutch putts than anybody has ever. He was just an awesome athlete and even after injuries he still got back from nowhere to become the world no 1 again.
Report Puggy4 July 21, 2013 12:40 PM BST
again..awesome athlete, he swings a golf club and walks between shots....Phil Taylor has won 16 world titles and he also walks between throws....is Phil also one of the worlds greatest "athletes"??
Report happyhibee July 21, 2013 12:41 PM BST
No but Taylor is a phenomenal sportsman. Darts is a sport and he is the greatest so it stands to reason he is a sportsman
Report therhino July 21, 2013 12:41 PM BST
Woods said in an interview once he reinvented the swing to maintain the hunger, and to continue to strive to be better. Thinks without it he may have gone stale or become bored, the challenge was what drove him on.
Report therhino July 21, 2013 12:42 PM BST
Where the standard arena is a mans garage, it is not a sport. Darts does not qualify, Taylor the champ of the backyard bbq past time, nothing more.
Report Puggy4 July 21, 2013 12:47 PM BST
some people cannot see the difference between a sportsman and an athlete....thats my point
Report mp06 July 21, 2013 12:48 PM BST
forgive him golf gods he is good for the game Silly
Report happyhibee July 21, 2013 12:49 PM BST
So you're only considered an athlete if you run around a lot? I'd say Ayrton Senna would be in any top 10 list but he just drove about quite quickly?
Report Mighty Whites 2008 July 21, 2013 12:50 PM BST
think woods injuries and the criticism that followed - will he ever win again provided motivation for him to come again.
Report The Mod father July 21, 2013 12:51 PM BST
Pretty sure the swing changes came about because of the pressure on his body would have took its toll in the long run. The swing changes were needed to pressure off his knee and prolong his career at the very top

Sorry mate that was lost in translation.

I think to be athlete or a sportsman there has to be some kind of physical exertion involved which is why darts, chess and snooker etc. don't qualify for me. Games, not sports, and certainly not athletes.

Report happyhibee July 21, 2013 1:01 PM BST
yeah fair enough Rhino I know what you mean with darts, snooker etc. So is golf a sport then as you're walking?
Report therhino July 21, 2013 1:02 PM BST
Oh dear, replying to myself Blush was meant for puggy
Report therhino July 21, 2013 1:05 PM BST
I still call golf a sport but I have mates that don't. Fitness and fatigue play a definite role, so endurance is very important which is fundamental for athletes. When we debate it, I don't tell them Darren Clarke, a guy who smokes while he plays and it overweight won the games highest honor Whoops

If it is a game, as opposed to a sport, it's definitely the worlds most loved game. For me though, sport.
Report Puggy4 July 21, 2013 1:06 PM BST
it is a sport but you certainly dont need to be an athlete as you see from all shapes and sizes...aphibarnrat for example
Report happyhibee July 21, 2013 1:06 PM BST
I agree Happy
Report Platini July 21, 2013 1:19 PM BST
just because its played outdoors does not make it a sport

golf is about as much a sport as snooker and darts. Again "athlete" LaughLaughLaughLaugh
