"Jim Furyk has just had 6 bogeys in a row. One of the favourites"

"Todd Hamilton got into a play off in 2004 which Ernie Els won"

Dreadful thing old age.

No wait a minute he was cr@p 20 years ago.

All seems a struggle for him nowadays. Has no sense of a moment either. Getting down the crunch on the back nine and he is wittering on about Captain Horatio and and his good lady wife and the centenary of some god forsaken golf club still stuck in 1930's

I actually find his general waffle about Captain Horatio etc for the Open a refreshing change once a year, particularly as he obviously doesn't take himself too seriously, when compared to Bruce 'The Colonel' Critchley on the majors with Sky wheeling out incorrect stat after incorrect stat about US tour players he obviously doesn't follow so he thinks they've never won before when they won a month ago, or getting the tournament wrong they did win, or the usual comment about it being a big surprise that "so & So's up in contention as he's done nothing much of late", when in fact he's had 4 top 20s in the past 6 weeks etc, etc.

He seemed to be an hour out, saying it was 6pm when it was 7pm, 6.30pm when it was 7.30pm.
But give me Allis anytime rather than that dreadful septic Curtis Strange, or Mr Bore Jacklin.

I have to disagree with the author of this thread. Peter is a breath of fresh air after listening to the shot centre crew and the Irishman who now claims that he is American. Allis came forward with a gem of wisdom the other night in an interview when he said that the brain is the most important club in the bag. Surely true this week on the parched Scottish links. Allis is an encyclopedia of the history of the game and it trips off his tongue without notes and a host of researchers. He has a very quick wit and is highly entertaining in my opinion.

Yeah I too find it enjoyable to listen to his "waffle", it adds to the whole occasion in my opinion. The man is extremely knowledgeable.

I have to agree with last comments, I also love listningt o what he says next , he might be older but a breath of fresh air on commentary, when he said the bit of waste ground at the sea was obviously earmarked for  new womans nine hole course a classic
who else in this day and age would say such a thing, when every one else is moaning about it ,he has the guts to say what comes to his mind instantly.

I used to like him but just think he is terrible now. All he says when a ball lands on the green is "steady steady steady" or " go on go on go on".

The earlier poster is correct, he has no sense of occasion, I get the impression he genuinely doesnt give a toss who wins as long as he can potter along in his own little world.

I am not disputing for a minute that he has great golf knowledge, but he isn't who I want for my golf commentator to impart drama.

he makes basic errors at massive moments. Mickelson practically had the green jacket on his shoulders in 04 and Alliss was waffling on about how it wasn't over

Watching him commentate over Woods was nauseating for years.

not a fan here - give Ken the big moments

The Open woud not be The Open Open without "Allis in Wonderland" I watch from abroad and enjoy the olde worlde Britishness of the occassion ,and cream cake punditry of Peter. He and Murray Walker are reminders of Britain long since lost.

Belongs in the dustbin of history along with Saville, Tarbuck, McCririck, Stuart Hall, Jim Davidson. The people who tv companies have tortured us with over the years.

I think over all the hours of coverage they have there's room for a bit of waffle, but he does need to be nudged aside when things actually turn serious.  The BBC probably have the best commentators across TV and radio (guys like Andrew Cotter and Ian Carter who actually do some research and can impart some drama), but still everything seems to centre too often on Allis' waffle.

There is waffle and then there is someone simply talking to himself about old Tommy Cockles, or his mate who is celebrating his 50th anniversary or whatever, sorry old chum we are watching to hear about the golf not your senile ramblings.

It is a television programme and as such has to attempt to capture the largest audience possible. It is not simply there to help golf punters get the most up to date information and influential statistics to assist in their gambling. Wish that it were, but its sole purpose is to get as large an audience as possible.
You are all lucky to have the Open on free to air and if you try to kill off the senile ramblings of the only true entertainer on the show you may help to kill off the show.

since when was the "open" English, even though the waste of money beeb present it as such.

their production of the golf has been garbage and they frequently have no idea where the ball is going.

all they have going for them is the fact that it is on for most of the day.

and can someone please remove Hazel Irvine.  A complete joke, thank phuck she cant enter the clubhouse.
