No need for fitted clubs for a beginner.  Just buy something cheap new or as you want, 2nd hand.
If and when you reach 20 hcp and are hooked, then spend more on new personal fitted clubs.

disagree for the sake of £50 better to start well and have proper allignment/offset etc clubs, playing golf with unsuitable clubs is bad for your body and can easily result in injury imo

been playing for 30 years without fitted clubs

buy a half set--go to the range--get a few lessons--grip/swing etc

Why would anyone not play with fitted clubs? If you go along to any golf club pro shop ( you don't need to be a member ) they will be able to make sure you get a set that suits, their not gonna send you out with something with the wrong shaft flex or don't lie correctly for you.

He's a beginner.  His swing will probably change a lot in the next year or two.  Then these fitted clubs wont suit his swing/swingspeed, therfore imo wasted money.
Better to wait until your swing has settled before you get fitted clubs.

Eddie IS correct.

Beginners need to buy cheap clubs to see if they like the game, improve the swing, get lessons.

Once that is done and your basic swing is sound then get proper custom fitted clubs.

What do you think fitted clubs are? I am not suggesting that he go's along to a Ping or Callaway customization centre and gets the latest frequency matched set using their launch moniters etc.
So you think it would be no problem to give a beginner a bladed, stiff shafted, flat lied longer than standed set of clubs and it would make no difference at all?, when for no extra cost he could get some expert advice from a Professional.
He will then be able to get a set that suits a beginner and his build.
I mean lets say the Pro has 6 second hand sets in stock we can probably reduce the choice to 3 sets, if he is right handed we can disregard the left handed set, tho wait he is ONLY a beginner, some of you might want to keep that choice as they might be the cheapest. Disregard the bladed set and the ones with oversize grips as the customer may have small hands and choose from the remaining 3.
From those remaining sets the Pro can make sure the clubs sits correctly for his build, and if not adjust them so they do.
That's all I am really suggesting needs to be done, I have taught 1,000's of people to play golf and you would be amazed at what clubs thay have brought for themselve's, Ok my left handed bit above was a dig at some of the previous comments, but if someone writes or plays tennis left handed they often assume that they should buy left handed golf clubs as well? yet when using a cricket bat they use it right handed. Just get the free advice!!

Go with Eddie, just get a half-set cheap, a couple of starter lessons with a pro to get the basics, then practise on a range then play on a short 9 hole course for a while to get used to the game.
Unless you are very tall or short don't worry about fitted clubs until you have a fairly grooved golf swing. By then you will have gotten to know the shops and local pro's and will be better placed to judge where you would like to be fitted, if you go that route, but for most golfers the standard clubs are fine.

Eddie is spot on. Get a cheap set of second hand clubs and see if you like the game. If u do and get into then you can look at upgrading.

Getting fitted is completely over hyped unless you are a good player, it is a relatively new phenomenon. Many mid to high handicappers rarely swing it the same way at the same speed multiple shoots running.

I agree. Start off with some cheapies. You may find that you don't enjoy the game, so no point on splashing out at this stage.

As for ill fitting clubs causing injuries... I've never heard such claptrap. They are only likely to cause injury if your playing partner grabs one and hits you over the head with it.

Good luck. It's a great sport, in the main played by decent folk.

Can get expensive after your fifth shot on the trot ends up in the lake. Also a great holiday, if, like me, you find sitting on a beach for two weeks the most boring pastime on earth.

Well I am amazed of some of the thought's on this thred, It cost's you no more to go get advice from someone who is a expert and who can see you in person, yet most of you are saying "spend the same but just get anything coz you are only a beginner"?
The thought that his swing speed will change, so what? his build won't change and thats what fitted clubs for a beginner is mostly about, chances are that about 80% of golfers will never need anything more than a regular shafted club anyway.
At least this way you won't end up with something that needs changing soon, do's not suit you and won't have cost you any extra.

If I was a beginner, I would take a course of 2-6 lessons from the pro at my local driving range, using hire clubs, before I decided,
a: If enjoy the game...
b: And if so, take advice on purchasing appropriate equipment.
