Invested in a beginner set... they look decent played a bit before but only starting out really. any tips for the novice lol??

15 years! not exactly regular, went from once a fortnight to once every year. shows you, love watching, love punting it, hate playing

This is one on grip. Once you get setup and grip correct just watch a few videos on swing and take it from there. Getting the basics right from the start is key. |

There's some great stuff on youtube on putting, chipping etc. Golf is just about getting the setup and basics right the practice.

Get a few lessons from a local pro at one of your local courses. I would avoid youtube like the plague for the time being. You head will be battered from watching all the videos and they things they are telling you. Get some lessons, get the basics taught one to one from a local professinal then get some practice in. Do not try and run before you can walk

I agree youtube is a mine field. But the setup video i posted is very good.

My first set was from the same make, served me well.
Maybe look into beginner group lessons from a local young pro, at some municipal courses they are only about £5 an hour which is the same cost as a bucket of balls. |

Go to a local pro , ask around , and the posh clubs dont always have the best teachers . Best one around here operates at a driving range .
Grip , stance , rhythmn , drum it in . But if you cant putt , trade in your clubs unless you are only looking for a good walk spoiled . Because if you cant putt it will drive you mad . If you are near a beach , use it ( provided you dont upset the surfers and the dog walkers ) for practice . Improves striking , and there is variety in the "going" , and you will never be ultra scared of bunker play . |

Try to avoid thumping the ball. Try to have a smooth swing. Grip the club very, very lightly.

putting is very important like kelly said.
i always tell my friends to mentally think of the putter as the easiest club to hit in the bag. after all it's the flattest face! this takes away some of the mental terror of putting in my opinion for beginners. having said that my mates still read their putts like a porno - in other words no reading! |

Most important thing is to get your grip correct. I play to a good standard and would say this is crucial, most average/poor players do not grip the club the right way.
