When Steven Hendry accidently had his cue broke in 2003 - the cue he'd won 7 World Titles with, he was never the same player, after previous winning 56 ranking events he only managed to win a further ONE tournament in Malta 3 years later - and then retired another 3 years after that. Same player, different cue, so what changed? Psychologically it killed him, with Rory it's both, physical and mental, difference is his old clubs are not broke -  imo if he doesn't change back he's a lay for the Masters as 6 weeks still won't be enough to adjust his swing to how it was and even if he played through the year getting used to Nike's equipment I wouldn't back him anywhere, you can't underestimate the importance of psychology in sport - last year he missed 4 cuts from 16, this year 2 from 2 and if that trend carry's on - it won't look good for Nike's brand either, he should either switch then switch back after the Masters to 'appease his sponsor' or switch full stop as it's not doing anyone any favours, it takes time to gain confidence in a new driver, time he hasn't got, what's more important - money or Majors?

Did he also split from his management team recently? Most of the game is played in the head and you need all aspects to be working well to succeed.
Report Vubiant March 2, 2013 7:46 PM GMT
Isn't it entirely likely that even if he were to switch back to his old clubs he would have lost his touch with them since he has spent three months or more trying to adjust to the new ones?
He's deffo in a bad place now and charting a clear way forward will be hard unless he gets lucky and something 'clicks'.
Mouney can't buy you love ...maybe it can't buy you majors either.

As i put in another thread,it's absolutely nothing to do with the new clubs lads

It's the massive increase in the weight of expectation that is beginning to cripple young Rory, imo.
Report mesmerised March 3, 2013 9:26 AM GMT
I don't think expectation bothers him, but Golf is a sport where the workman can blame his tools if they don't do the job.
Report pokeron March 3, 2013 11:29 AM GMT
in this case it's more like, 'the workman IS a tool' Cool

Don't under estimate the Wozniacki factor for all this either as he's young and clearly smitten !! If the wisdom tooth was an odd call this week what about the last day of the Ryder Cup when he nearly missed his tee time and the complete b0llox he came out with to try and explain it !
Report baNjackst March 3, 2013 12:36 PM GMT
How many times have you heard top sport stars say " Its not about the money " well it is all about the money Rory, and I don't buy into your tooth ache nor do I wish you any success with your NIKE clubs.
Too much to say for a young lad.

More chance of me teeing it up at The Masters than Rory ever changing his Nike clubs. He has 256 million reasons to stick with them...

Nick Faldo was the first pundit to publicly question Rorys decision to switch equipment , and you have to respect his opinion , particularly as he has known and watched Rory close up since before most of you knew Rorys name . He ventured caution in respect of the change , having suffered himself through experimentation with club change . He did not venture the opinion with any sort of malice , just a warning not to expect a smooth passage , 100% right so far , assuming the change has engendered some swing or mental "feel " problem .

Or maybe it is toothache , or the tooth fairy as the ST puts it .  Or something else .  Who knows ?
Report GoBallistic March 3, 2013 2:16 PM GMT
He's got a swing that's not very forgiving when the timing is off (unlike some of the more mechanical swings you see taught now). Change of clubs probably doesn't help but he missed three cuts on the trot 10 months ago with the old clubs. A few months later he was winning a major.

To my mind he's never been the strongest mentally so we're not really seeing anything new here
Report xmoneyx March 3, 2013 3:12 PM GMT
Faldo changed his swing not clubs?
Report Kelly March 3, 2013 4:13 PM GMT
Go Ballistic , Rorys slump 10 months ago approx was not related to clubs . Subsequent events were the evidence of that .

This time though it might be wisdom teeth or something we know nothing about , but the prime suspect is different feel with new clubs in your hand .  I cannot believe that some people are dismissing that possibility and assuring us all "its nothing to do with the clubs " .

All of us have favourite balls , anyone who hasn't has not figured out their game . Some play different balls in different conditions , proof ( if it were needed) that equipment and balls do matter , dependent on conditions .  If someone handed me a box of new balls on the first , I would try one out for a hole or two , if they worked OK , if not , its back into the bag for the pro v1 .

The biggest change in European golf occurred when we switched to the bigger ball , up to that we were trotting behind the Yanks . Why --makes better golfers .

In the process of catching up on Jacks comments re Rory walk-off , I came across an article where Rory was railing at Nick's comments re equipment change .  I saw that piece on TV when Nick warned of potential problems with equipment change , Nick was not having a dig at Rory , he was just warning that sometimes these changes did not always work out . He related that at some stage he switched clubs and one particular club took 30 yards off his normal distance previous to that .

Like some others I suspect , I took note of what Nick had said , equipment does matter to most people ( maybe not to Jack , plenty of stories regarding his ability to play with any equipment , but everybody is different ) , so far Nick's comments have not been proved wrong re potential problems for Rory . Plus there is a big point to prove in the event of such a high profile switch , and the jury will be out for a while sifting any evidence .

Surprised that Rory commented on Nick's view , my counsel to Rory would have been to disprove the comments by dint of performance , leave the talking to the score on the course . But responding publicly just throws petrol an any fire which has ignited  , let the clubs do the talking instead .

One of the problems I find in society nowadays , particularly among the younger generations , is that instant communication does not always make for mature reactions , and some of the pro golfers seem to buy into the instant tweet syndrome . We have seen various tiffs between commentators and players , where in reality both are just trying to do a job , but ill judged comments should be left to others to sort out , thats why "entourages" exist  , better to involve a third party rather than direct spats .

Rory is box office , loved the majority of his golf to date , but as Peter Parker put it "with great power comes great responsibility " . So the world watches , nobody in the public eye can sneeze these days without generating thousands of comments on "social networking arrangements " , living in a goldfish bowl where everyone has a mobile phone intent on taking photographs etc and texting . Sometimes think the whole world is going headlong into a situation where everybody is constantly talking to everyone else on the planet .

Learn from Tiger , Rory , make sure there is a safety net , deflect the trick questions  , use the management company for statements etc , put them in the public eye rather than yourself . They are probably getting 20% , let them earn it . Play smart , not just on the course , but off it too .

Too easy for the media now , always looking for stories .  Unfortunately one of the few places left where Rory has privacy is back here at home in Ireland , where people respect his privacy and he can go go more or less where he wants in his own time and under his own power .  Cant do that in the States though , different expectations there in that respect . Goes with the job , mores the pity .

I have no doubt Rory and Michael will sort out any problems re the golf aspect of current hiccup , if not we will all be the poorer . Its tough at the top ! Precipice living !

First of all i dont think anyone could have turned down the sponsorship deal with Nike. Secondly, no one can ever be the type of winning player Tiger was in his prime. The adverts comparing the two can only put pressure of McIlroy he can never live up to.

Surely, this would be a good time for McIroy and Nike to make a tongue in cheek advert about the way McIlroy is playing at the moment.
Report Kelly March 5, 2013 10:45 AM GMT
Agreed Paddletoe , hard to turn down big bucks as in Nike deal .  Mind you I am sure previous sponsor was not on a £1 nominal fee , so that has to be subtracted , media not good on sums like that , no headlines . If the deal proves to be Faustian ( only time will tell , the tale of the tape in boxing terms ) though ....

There is a well known historical golf happening way back though , involving Jack ( as an aside , Jack is one of the most used chritian names these last few years , when I was growing up the church would not allow anyone to be christened Jack , had to be John or a derivative thereof ..????) .  Jack was offered a million dollars for a one off exhibition game ( not sure of the opponent) when Jack reigned supreme .  Jack turned it down , saying " it would not be good for the game of golf" . I fully agreed with him , it was funny money in those days , way out of line with what the average pro could expect in a lifetime .

For reasons like that , Tiger ( golfer performing) fan though I am , I want Jack to retain his 18 record as a fitting memorial to his talent and integrity as a person and to the game -- a  high bar he has set on many counts . But I wouldn't bet on the 18 surviving !
Report pokeron March 5, 2013 11:58 AM GMT
good work by jack turning down that money. he realised he had ENOUGH. wise.
how much did tiger and rory get each for playing one round exhibition in china? two million? joke.

jack to retain indeed! i reckon majors are total crapshoots nowadays so jack is quite safe. reason i say this is there are only four of them a year. and if you get the best of the best to play four tourneys you'll prob get four diff winners.

tiger is back to human now and rory is enduring vagina cramps. jack is safe!

rory should perhaps have just used his old clubs and put a swoosh on it. a lot of aussie crickters use bradbury bats and simply put their sponsors logo on top. cricket bats are easier to disguise though i'll give them that. for golf fans in know, it will be obvious when one of the cameras zoomed in on a slow mo, that they were indeed titleists disguised as nikes. the question is, would nike care about this? possibly...

Aussie cricket going through a mild mid life crisis , pokeron .  Pretty easy meat for the Indians these last 2 matches  , hope they can make a match of the next one . Remember the cricket bat syndrome myself , still have a "Gradidge" bat somewhere in the garage , occasionally some of the grandchildren spot it .  Must be a museum piece nowadays , like my Golden Goose putter .

Ah for the smell of linseed oil !

Better show from Rory in last round , did not see any coverage ( Mothers day commitments ), but 65 is his best score by far this year as I recall .  Lets hope he continues to consolidate his game , looks like Tiger is back to something approaching his best , not many outside Rory have the game to challenge a good Tiger consistently .  Might be an interesting season .

I think it’s just as hard to disguise cricket bats. I once sat next to the Aussie balcony at Gloucester. The Gunn & Moore bats on show bore no resemblance to the real ones. One definitely looked like a Millichamp & Hall with stickers on.

Rory is "streak" golfer , when he's "on" he's close to unbeatable , when he's "off" he loses interest and misses cuts or finishes tied for 37th , most golfers are similar , only the true greats like Nicklaus and Woods are there week in week out.
