Ian Poulter and his matchplay hype is found wanting on a cold windy sunday morning and afternoon in Arizona. HE can play and he's hard to beat but the hype by sky and its commentators is ridiculous. Those who backed him to beat Jason Day for thousands from 1.13 to 1.2 when two up thru 4 believed that hype and look like getting burned. Poulter is barely a top twenty five player IMO, talks himself up big time but his long game is just above tour average. His short game is to die for, possibly ranks alongside Luke Donald as one of the best .A major winner , i dont think so.
You should wash ur mouth out with soapy water. I mean its not as if he went out in rd 1 the last two years or flopped at the euro version.
shush he is the match play king don't you know. You should wash ur mouth out with soapy water. I mean its not as if he went out in rd 1 the last two years or flopped at the euro version.
It's hard to knock Poulter really, he is playing against guys with oodles more talent than he has, but has worked his arse off to get where he is. Hats off to him I say.

i was looking for 1.3 at 2up but nobody was laying. in the back of my mind thought 1.2 was a bit short considering he was only playing for a bit of change

He genuinely is the worst ball striker in the worlds top 100 by a country mile, imo.I've seen him on the range next to Casey and,my god, what a difference.I've followed Poulter a few times and he's like a very, very decent amateur player with a good short game.Hardly see him miss a putt, though, and has supreme confidence in himself.
He gets every ounce of talent out of his game and is a multi millionaire so who are we to question......he's also quite refreshing to the game and speaks his mind which i like.
Plenty of room in the game for the likes of Ian Poulter, imo.

Agreed -the RC is a special event of its type -an emotion-filled hypefest. But it has sweet phukkawl to do with rating genuine top talent or champion quality -witness e.g. how Jack and Tiger have modest records in the RC but no one -least of all themselves- give a tuppenny damn.

Poulter, Rose and possibly Donald aside, the other 3 are mentally weak players.Great at beating up the journeymen on the Euro tour but constantly found wanting at the highest level.
The Ryder Cup is a great big comfort blanket for those fragile nerves and yes,Monty,we do know you have a good Ryder cup record but if you mention it one more time whilst commentating i wont be reponsible for my actions
Also,no major winner would even begin to think about swapping their major for Monty's RC record.......not one, imo.

Majors are individual , RC team , essential difference . Matchplay vs medal play , 2 different animals .
The real great players ( with the possible exception of Tiger ) were good in both . Those who shine in one discipline but not the other generally dont rate as greats . Seve was brilliant in both , sealed his greatness , sometimes I think Seve put his matchplay hat on when anywhere near the top in medal play .
But the Americans dont care as much about Ryder Cup as we do , and up to 1980 or so , it was easy peasy for them most years , so no challenge . No money in it either , relevant for some .

I actually think finishing 4th in a top class field of 64 exactly qualifies all the hype that Poulter is a Matchplay great. To get consistently good results in Matchplay events is very difficult indeed.
Not a top 25 player? Is that why his WGR is 10?I actually think finishing 4th in a top class field of 64 exactly qualifies all the hype that Poulter is a Matchplay great. To get consistently good results in Matchplay events is very difficult indeed.
He was won the wgc matchplay more times than anyone else. He won 3 US Amateur titles.
He was 4 wins 2 ties and a loss in the ryder cup singles.
Matchplay is different to medal but it suits the less able player more than the more able.
Bit harsh on Tiger KellyHe was won the wgc matchplay more times than anyone else. He won 3 US Amateur titles. He was 4 wins 2 ties and a loss in the ryder cup singles.Matchplay is different to medal but it suits the less able player more than the more

Correct Harry.
Poulter went out in rd 1 in 2011 and 2012 at the wgc matchplay. He lost in the rd of 16 at the euro version last year.

the real great players win majors...........ryder cup is great viewing and us europeans may remember some moments but please u dont need a good ryder cup record to be a great player........

Ian Poulter knows where he stands in the world's golfing hierarchy.
He knows that he will never go down as one of the greats, but he also knows that he is where he is because he's worked his butt off to get from being an assistant pro, to being one of the most successful golfers on the planet.
If he didn't ooze with self confidence (some may say arrogance), then we would never have heard of him.
There seems to be a fair amount of dislike for the fella on here, but for me, every young golfer, or any other youngster starting out on their chosen career, should take a leaf out of this guy's book. Hard work pays dividends.
I'm a big fan, and I can't really see why the fact that he went out in round one in 2011, and 2012, bears any real weight.
He is clearly a class above most when it comes to matches.

I agree maggot he has done well to make the most of his talents.
This Mr Matchplay stuff is rubbish though. He had a decent run this year but in previous years he has gone home at the first time of asking not only here but in the euro version.
18 hole matchplay is a bit of lottery. Take last week Tiger was -2 thru 17 and lost. In a normal week it would have been a steady start but the guy he played was better and sent him packing.
I accept Poulter does better in matchplay than normal events but that is because he rarely contents in medal events on the PGA Tour.

Clarkey is spot on about Poulter....His ball striking is shocking and his Pga tour record is nothing short of terrible!Never has he made it to the tour championship and he has never won an official stroke play event...in 7 years..He has however been the most over achieving guy to make the most of lets face it average ability...I also agree about the RC ...the Yanks only start talking about it the week before the event....Monty ffs dear oh dear...he is brutal i wish Sky would see the light and off load the self serving ...!

The HSBC hasn't counted as official money or fed ex cup points in the past due to its date. It will be included in the new wrap around format for next year. The event does get the winner a tour exemption and an invite to the tournament of champions.
I think hackers point was that Poulter has never won and rarely contented in strokeplay events on US soil.

not so much Poulter that I had a problem with but Sky's coverage.
Both Livingstone and Poulter were pretty objectionable....Monty: 'the viewers will be thinking.......' - a) we think individually not collectively and b) I'm mainly thinking that whilst you were a bit of a novelty when you started the commentary gig, you're becoming very predictable and one dimensional'
Livingstone managed to summon up the temerity to have a go at Jason Day for descibing Matt Kuchar as 'steady' before resuming the Poulter love in and then there was much merriment from Monty speculating that neither Simpson nor Mahan wanted to win their quarter final because they'd have to play Poulter next.
Rob Lee banging on about Simpson's slow play seemed to completely overlook the fact that he and Mahan spent most of their match waiting for the group in front.
I'm becomng less enamoured with the Sky coverage with every passing week - far too parochial.

^ yep...and that's another point - they were missing shots when there were only four players on the course.........akin to running commercials or switching to Redknapp and Hoddle in the studio whilst Manchester United fire in shots at the Real Madrid goal

Fair play , Mighty Whites , re Tigers overall record , which is good in matchplay . But I was only referring to the Ryder Cup where his record is not up to the level of the rest of his legacy . Could never figure out why he just did not seem up for the Ryder Cup .
Whatever about Poulters striking ability , he has played very well in the last year , particularly in the RC and in the world matchplay over a longer period . Suits his game , and he is a very good putter when he is in the zone . Golf is not just about ball striking , its the lowest score .
The real gripe most of us have is with the hype , be it Tiger , Rory , Bubba , Phil , Poulter , Monty etc . Just let the golfers get on with their game and talk about it afterwards in a cool calm and collected way . Leave the superlatives to when they are deserved ( if they are ) .

I like Ian Poulter and not just because he's an Arsenal fan, he's one of the games characters and the way he celebrates a great or important shot is a lot better than seeing some players that have little or no reaction - that aside the truth is he doesn't have the same passion for winning a major as he does say a Ryder Cup win and maybe that's because he revels in the team spirit/mentality as opposed to doing it for yourself, if he is gonner win a major, he needs more power be it off the tee or attacking a flag when it matters.

The problem with Sky golf coverage of USPGA events is that there are gaps in the live golf so the commentators have to think of something to say to fill the gap. Usually it's a load of repetitious shoite.

Dont think even Poulter would buy into that , xmoneyx . Mind you I do recall Poults talking of himself in the same breath as Tiger , so nothing would surprise .
Seve and Tom are firmly in top 10 of all time , majors alone doing that for them , never mind their other wins and their contribution to the game .
Poults is good craic as they say from a viewers perspective . But when the sands of time run out on his golfing career it will be interesting to see the tally in terms of wins and majors( if any ) .

Hacker thinks that his PGA tour record is "nothing short of terrible"
He may not have won a strokeplay on U.S. soil, but his record is hardly terrible, in fact it's pretty darn good.. The majority of golfers would love his record.

good post kelly. I agree with you about the putting. Pretty much every week the guy who wins is the one who puts best.
Last week going into the final mahan had missed just one putt from inside 10 ft. Top quality putting is far more important than ball striking.
