Not sure if it was misinformation or a back instead of lay . When I saw it I assumed some sort of announcement had been made .

He is now the favourite to be named captain according to Sky Sports
Report DONEMYLOT January 14, 2013 2:38 PM GMT
Bent as rissoles. DC never mentioned his unsuitability at any point through six months.

market was cleaned out last time monty was appointed

probably a market to avoid in future if monty gets this
Report aberdonia January 14, 2013 5:32 PM GMT
Easy answer this.

Monty backed himself.
Report Senyatta January 14, 2013 5:34 PM GMT
if mcginley doesnt get it this time hell never get it. perfect time for him. very disappointed by monty. if he gets it i hope europe lose.
Report Regular Fries January 14, 2013 6:11 PM GMT
I wouldn't go that far, but I do think it's poor form by Monty.

The senior players have come out in support of McGinley today anyway.
Report mexicano January 14, 2013 6:26 PM GMT
monty not playing very well so decides to get his mates to break with recent precedent and let him have another go.

spoilt brat.........me........me.............me.......me.

Hi mex,

I'm certainly not as anti-monty as many, but noticed that when they were showing re-runs of Celtic Manor in the lead up to last year's RC. Just before Mahan conceded on the 17th, a close up of Monty he clearly says, 'we've won, I did it'. Says it all really.
Report Senyatta January 14, 2013 6:36 PM GMT
monty out to 2.2 for few hundred now...whos the guy who backed 1.01? must surely have known something?
Report mexicano January 14, 2013 6:36 PM GMT
monty was immense as a player in the ryder cup. he was honoured with the captaincy.

that should be enough.

i wonder if he would be as keen to do another one in the states were there's more chance of HIM losing?
Report aberdonia January 14, 2013 6:40 PM GMT
Monty wants to be part of history.

(1) 2014 Ryder Cup held in Scotland

(2) Anniversary of Bannockburn in 2014

(3) Independence Referendum in 2014.

(4) Monty wants to be remembered for ever in Scottish History.  LaughLaugh
Report Regular Fries January 14, 2013 6:43 PM GMT
could you argue Europe made heavy weather of Celtic Manor?

I just think it's been 20 odd years since Europe started revolving the captaincy and they've lost the RC just twice in that time. He had his time, step aside and give McGinley a go. He's been primed for this imo what with vice captaincy and seve trophy and the players seem to love him.
Report aberdonia January 14, 2013 6:49 PM GMT
we were rank at Celtic Manor and very lucky to win.

He should have waited for Gleneagles to become captain but his huge ego got the better of him.

I would be very surprised if there is not a lobby from within Scotland pressing the EPGA to appoint Monty.
Report Regular Fries January 14, 2013 6:51 PM GMT
He's on the 15 man committee as well isn't he? Laugh
Report saxon farm January 14, 2013 7:20 PM GMT
If Monty gets the gig, it is for all the WRONG reasons.
Report Scotsirish January 14, 2013 7:38 PM GMT
I believe there is committee  of 15 of which minty and Mcginley are both members. Assuming they will be asked to leave room. Also Karlsson and AMJ will not be in attendance for various reasons. So vote between 11 members. With the players backing mcginley I hope they have the same desire as they did at Medinah where the will to win was evident if  Monty gets the gig. I don't understand why Monty would want this he is a no win situation.
Report xmoneyx January 14, 2013 7:43 PM GMT
5-live hinting Monty is fav

Darren Clarke stuck a knife in saying--there's no rules u can't be captain twice
Report mexicano January 14, 2013 7:43 PM GMT
why does monty want it?????????????????????

because he's full of peas and self importance.
Report par January 14, 2013 7:46 PM GMT
The senior players seem to be rallying behind McGinley.

Poulter tweeted support for McGinley as well.

Cant believe monty in frame for this again

should be a 1 off duty and passed about, its more of a token appointment for me and has little/no influence on the result of the match.

Shameful to give same guy 2 goes at it out of 3 when many other waiting/deserving a chance
Report STEPTOES YARD January 14, 2013 9:08 PM GMT
the one bonus of him being skipper is of course it keeps him out the skysports comms box
Report henrik.L January 14, 2013 9:14 PM GMT
Monty is a selfish (cant say)
His games gone
He doesn't want to "rough it" with the over 50's
Can't handle it he's no longer in the spotlight
Needs to be the centre of attention
McGinley deserves his chance
If "Fatty" had any decency he'd have refused to stand.
Report ReaseHeath January 14, 2013 10:57 PM GMT
committee surely needs to listen to the players here - Poulter, Donald, McIlroy all come out in support of McGinley I believe.

Monty should phone AVB.
Report i think i have a problem January 15, 2013 12:02 AM GMT
Monty realised he couldnt win a major and decided the ryder cup would become "his thing"

Now he goes on like he single handly turned around the tide of USA ryder cup dominance

in 20 years he will be telling us all how he played in all 16 4some/4balls and all 12 singles in 2010 as well as being captain

It wasn't a fat finger moment that was somebody asking at odds on and gradually going shorter on his ask price.  I assumed that a tv channel somewhere in the world was showing old golf news footage. £288 left there sitting at 1.01 while I scouted around looking for news of an announcement!

Report Kelly January 15, 2013 9:03 AM GMT
Presumably you laid it Shirley , announcement not scheduled back then .  Dont think it sat up there too long though from what I remember  , but I also dont think there were any backs still there to counterbalance the 1.01 lay .

Think Darren had announced that he was effectively not in the running around then , and possibly it was breaking news .  Small market anyway particulalry as originally it looked like a fairly tight 2 horse race ( Paul and Darren ) .

Report kincsem January 16, 2013 5:44 PM GMT
McGinley is a little terrier.  He won't dictate to the players. He will have the organisation spot on.  No need for last minute police squad cars.
