Hi Guys

Am planning a golf trip to Portugal for March sort of time with a group from our club. Got 8 of us together which is a great number I think and works out nicely for the golf.

Have done quite a bit of research on the internet, but just wondered if anyone had been over there to play? If so do you have any recommendations on courses, hotels/villas, areas or companies that organise this?

Any help or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

many thanks

More info needed, handicap range, age mix, drinkers or sensible, Lisbon or Algarve, buggies or bags etc.

Hi Golfdaft

Age ranges will be from 30-50 with the handicaps ranging from 6-18. Fair to say we are all drinkers, so would need to be near a fresh supply of booze.

Algarve is where I have looked so far, but open to suggestions.

We will all be taking across our own clubs, but I expect we would be using buggies if possible.

Looking at a 3 night break to keep teh families at home happy(ish!!)

Portugal was the one that came up when I was researching as a good break and with a great price, but happy to go anywhere really.

Cheers

I guess your budget is important too. I would say that if you want a ready made break, then go to yourgolftravel website and there are loads to choose from and there is bound to be one to fit what you require.

If not, the Algarve has a few multi course holiday options, given your handicapp range and the fact you want ale then you could do worse than stay at the Tivoli at Lagos, about an hour and a quarter from Faro, heading west. Nearby courses are Penina ( good resort hotel with free golf, but too many people without there own teeth in the evening and all singing begin the begin with a sherry in hand ). You also have Morgado, Boa Vista and Palmares ( great spot for a beer and lunch after your round. Some very decent restaurants in Lagos too and a few bars showing the footy too.

Courses are not as classy as the Vilamoura complex, but given your motivation and the fact that your actually going goin the xxxx, then you will find the prices more reasonable.

Hi Guys

Many thanks for your replies, have given me a lot to go away and work on.

Budget wise I would think around £300 pp, this is only going from figures quoted on golfbreaks, will learn the reality soon!

Will check out villamoura, sounds like it could fit the bill

Should you play Parque De Floresta make sure you get a buggy, do not walk it as its likely you will pass out, bring 2-3 litres of water too, the walfs from green to tee are massive!

It is stunning however and one of the toughest courses i have played, a real test.

Vilamoura is as stated beautiful but is also one of the toughest, Boavista is nice but overpriced. I have other scorecards and course guides and will dig them out later and give views on each course, i am sure many on here have played the same ones so sure you will get plenty of info.

Good luck with your trip, cant beat a few days away with the lads and playing to your handcap if not a few better....enjoy Wink

a bunch of us go on golfing trip every two years, Malaga, Las Vegas, South Carolina, northern France.... great times had at all but I would say the week in Cascais, Portugal was amongst the best, never been to the Argarve so can.t comment on that, but Cascais was excellant as the courses were good and the hotel is in a town, rather than a resort as such, a stones throw to the casino at estoril was a bonus....

Hi Besty,

Went to Portugal last year with a group of 16 and stayed at this place as part of a golf package. I didn’t organise it but there is links on the website.

http://www.formosapark-hotel.com

Hotel was great, a bit out the way but only 20 mins to Vilamoura and easy to get a taxi/mini bus from hotel and back. Free transfers to course and a happy hour between 6 & 7 was particularly welcome!! It is geared up for golf the rooms we had were 2 bedroomed apartments with dining/kitchen area in the middle.

Superb golf at San Lorenzo and Pinerhos Altos and it was great value. I would thoroughly recommend.

We are going again next year as we alternate between UK/abroad. Just ask if you need any further info?

Hi 365

Thats great thanks, will get on that site and have a good look.

The issue is there is so much choice, I think it is one of those where you just need to pick and go for it

Cheers

Leave your clubs at the airport, change flights to Malaga and spend the week in "My Ladies Palace" in Puerto Banus.
A must do thing before you expire.

Forgot to mention I am going back with a family in September.

Yes, there is loads of choice and tons of companies offering the 'best deal'. I can only speak from my experience and it was really good value and excellent golf. All the lads said it was the best ever trip they had ever organised and the society is 25 years old.

I'm sure you will make the most of whatever you decide, enjoy.

have been to algave every second year since 2001 with a group of 12.  this year we are going to Lisbon (Cascais) in Sep for the first time.  Finding the valus for money a bit better in Lisbon, for golf at least.
Algarve; suggest you stay Vilamoura or Albufeira.  Both are easy to get to from Faro. If you want to avoid the package deals and book yourself, use a company called polotour for airport transfers and golf transfers - super value and good to deal with.  Some hotels do free transfers to the golf.  Old Course, Quinto south, Victoria all excellent (Vic a bit pricey). VilaSol also very good - ensure to play the old 18. Pinheros Altos gets mixed reviews - I liked it although the 2 nines have different types of grass which is a bit off putting.
All of the courses tend to fleece a bit when it comes to buggies etc,
For Lisbon this year I am using yourgolftravel dot com - found them decent to deal with - the tour operators can get discounts for green fees that you wont be able to get.  They also get ok prices for hotels.  They can fleece you on the transfers bit, so see above and easy to manage this bit yourself
Both towns will be quiet in March, but plenty watering holes. No problem getting Sky sports etc.

there are fantastic deals for staying at the Dona Filipa with free golf at San Lorenzo

http://www.yourgolftravel.com/dona-filipa-hotel.html

Hotel is 50 yards from beach, bars and restaurants - courtesy minibus to golf course

Been twice in last 2 years - cost about £240 - absolute bargain

10 minute cab ride to Vilamoura if you fancy a change of scenery

If you give me  a call giving me more details I will price up a few alternatives for you. Some of the replies you have had have pointed out that there are great deals at Formosa Park and they are right; theres a fantastic golf course at San Lorenzo and the apartments are 4 star. However that type of holiday where you stay on site so to speak may not suit everyone. It may be that you want to stay in a town where you have far more choice of evening entertainment rather than having to stay in the same place every night. If thats the case either Vilamoura or Albufeira would be the best bet. Have a look at www.glencorgolf.com and get in touch and we will look after you at special Betfair rates !!

Just got back from a long weekend of 3 nights & 4 rounds of golf staying at Waterloo in Belgium. Nice hotel & decent pubs/restaurants. £319 with Golf breaks inc. channel tunnel. St Omer (played on way down to Belgium on 1st day), American Tournette, Empreneur & Sept Fontaine.

Alternatively really good places to stay in France are Dieppe or Arras as both offer excellent bars & restaurants for good value & play courses such Belle Dune, Hardelot (Les Pins), St Omer & Arras or Dieppe.
