''They are playing for second I'm afraid.''

What a stupid thing to say. He was there at Augusta last year ffs. If a peak Tiger had a 3 shot lead then fair play but Rory is not home and hosed yet.

Murray is terrible.

The man makes me cringe.

Much prefer the yanks, Miller and Maltbie are a great listen. Laugh

As for Monty, he is so bad, that he is entertaining.

This week we have been told all about his ryder cup exploits at Kiawah, by the "great" man himself.

Mentioning "my comeback" against Calc was my particular favourite "monty moment" this week.

I do vaguely recall that we had a much better squad of players to pick from but monty made a game of it by picking hopeless harrington instead of one of the worlds best match players...Casey.

Report Mr Eboue August 13, 2012 12:18 PM BST
The think I think he doesn't grasp is - we know he was a good Ryder cup player. We know he captained Europe in 2010.

He does not have to mention this every time a European player plays his shot.

His commentary style is almost patronising at times.

He needs to understand that Major championships are equally, if not more important, than the Ryder cup.
Report xmoneyx August 13, 2012 12:31 PM BST
hes quite good if he dropped ryder cup mentions

if he won a couple of majors the ryder cup wouldnt be mentioned

Monty got it 100% correct for the USPGA , for anyone prepared to listen and analyse what he was saying . Those who oppose anything Monty says got whupped , up their noses , you have to take people as you find them  , and variety is the spice of life .

Monty said early on Sunday morning that the course and conditions were set up for a player like Rory , and I guess Monty would know that .  Unlike most of the correspondents on here who would not have a fraction of Monty's insight into what goes on out there in a Major .

All may not like Monty , his background , his reflections , but he knows whats going on , he knows the game , he won a lot , captained a Ryder Cup winning side , plus had a tremendous record in it himself . Like him myself , but then I tend to listen and analyse what people are saying , and discount the irrelevant , bye ball etc . Could have produced a nice short priced stress free bet for anyone who did listen .  That cant be bad , and he said it more than once .

He's not everyone's cup of tea, but he got it spot on and deserves some credit for saying so - he calls it as he sees it which is no bad thing.

Tiger was back to his spitting antics and was a bit of a drama queen when he got a thistle in his leg - so he deserved the comments he got from the pundits.

Exactly RF.... he was probably the surliest, rudest, most up his own @rse golfer I have ever had the displeasure to watch live. Several times.

Yes he can put a smile on for the cameras, who cant?

I despised Gary Neville as a player, but am willing to accept he is an excellent pundit Kelly. Its not an 'anti Monty' thing, just because I didnt like him as a golfer. I just dont rate him as a pundit. He isnt particularly insightful, considering he has made it to the top and played against most of these. And is self obsessed.
Report Kelly August 13, 2012 9:32 PM BST
Cannot understand why anyone did not like Monty as a golfer .  For about 10 years he WAS the European tour , played all the time , won hugely , always gave the punters a run for their money ,I made a lot of money on him throughout that period . Monty's ball control in his good years was sublime , always pin high and sometimes close , and he was a good putter before Father Time caught up with him .

He got tetchy with the crowds in USA in particular , but from what I glean a fair percentage of those who go to watch golf in USA do not know the game .  That would be foreign to Monty with his background and I can understand any resentment that generated .

Regarding punditry , if its tipping winners his latest effort was 100% .  His comments about Tiger were also spot on from the occasions I heard , Tiger ( for him ) played slipshod golf on Saturday and Sunday . Thursday and Friday Tiger was all smiles , putting like God , but things changed on the last two days and Monty duly noted that . Monty was bigging up Ian Poulter in the run , you could criticise his judgement there , but its part of a commentators job to keep the audience awake , and they were worried that Rory was getting into a position to put the tournament to bed and thats not good for ratings .

Incidentally Tiger has never come from off the pace to win a Major . Statistically does that indicate anything ?
Report Can't Catch Me August 13, 2012 9:47 PM BST
Kelly. you dont seem to be getting this. I have nothing but respect for him as a golfer. Whats that got to do with what Im saying here? Its completely besides the point.

I have been in his company a few times... and followed him live about a dozen times (only in the UK). The way he spoke to his caddy, the marshalls, the crowd, was absolutely disgusting at times. I have met several sports stars and Monty is without any shadow of doubt the biggest c*nt I've ever come across. Maybe I caught him on a bad day. Every time.

I would be willing to let him off all of that if I felt he was a really good pundit. I just dont think he is. Maybe I'm so set against him, he cant ever win me over, but I am not small minded and petty enough to criticise the bloke just because I dont like him. Its not even a case of me criticising his judgement.... Thats a separate issue imo. I had to mute him over the weekend, something I seldom do.

We're all entitled to our opinion.

Sorry , Cant catch me , re your post of 21.14 when you said "just because I didn't like him as a golfer "-- seems at odds with your subsequent latest post of 21.47 . I took that as read  , that you didn't like Monty as a golfer .

Regarding what Monty is like as a person , few will get the opportunity to judge that particularly if he goes the commentator route where everyone watches their p's and q's . On TV he comes across as OK , to me , and he knows the game unlike some of the other sporting pundits/ celebrities  who pop up on our screens at various times .

No thread on Monty should ever be allowed to pass without using the words "Valderrama" and "Jakarta".

Plus Jacks line of sight , Tigers ball in the soup , Nicks trampoline ball at Wentworth , Darrens overnight magic grass cut , Ernies invisible pile of rubbish , VJ , etc.

Golf is littered with incidents , most of the pros know how to take advantage .  Darren the only one with completely clean hands in that list . But part of the problem is that the rules are out of date , and depend too much on the letter of the law rather than the spirit of the game . The rules evolved more than a century ago , and need a bit of scrutiny , some of the situations we have seen bring golf close to being in disrepute when high profile players are involved .
Report clarkey August 14, 2012 2:10 PM BST
If Monty had won a few majors he'd barely mention the Ryder Cup.He only goes on about it so much because his ego is being destroyed when he sees guys like G-Mac,Rory,Darren Clarke,Harrington all being major winners so Monty feels, maybe subconciously, that to be able to pass comment on these major winners,he has to beef up his own achievments.

He actually spoiled part of sun nights coverage for me by his obsession with the RC when we were watching Rory's march to another major.
He needs to be told that majors massively outweigh the RC in a golfer's career and it's typical of the mans ego that he can barely bring himself to mention other players success without mentioning the bloody Ryder Cup!!!

As for him having a go at Tiger's on course "antics",Monty's behaviour was an absolute disgrace on the Golf Course

Murray's outburst was sparked by an incident at the London Club last Friday. Montgomerie, who had hit into water at the 13th, did his usual deliciously daft thing in picking on some unsuspecting person to share in the blame. In this instance, it was a Sky cameraman who was pointing a recorder in his direction.

Montgomerie asked: "Do you have a problem?" The cameraman said no and Montgomerie, after a bit of thought, said a condescending: "You're only here because of me. Remember that." LaughCrySadLaugh

Murray called for Montgomerie to apologise and said he had let people down, including the European Tour.

I played with my club pro yesterday, who knows monty well from his junior days when they played golf for scotland together, and they are still friends today. Apparently he is actually very shy, which you can see when he is on camera when he looks at the floor etc.. Also he gives up a lot of his time for charity events, for example he turned up unexpectedly to open a course for underprivileged people in Glasgow which my pro's father had created through charity work. Interestingly the pro said Monty hasnt done himself any favours on the course, and should have left the talking to the caddy while on course. My opinion of Monty was low before yesterday, thanks to the way he comes across on TV an all of the talk about the ryder cup, however I am willing to listen to someone who knows him well and has played with him ALOT rather than forming my own opinion of him just from watching TV.
As a side the pro said his 5 yard fade that he hit EVERY time was quite something to behold!
