Was just having a look at the teams as things stand.  US deadline is after the PGA Championship, Euros get another 2 weeks.

Europe

Rory McIlroy
Graeme McDowell
Justin Rose
Paul Lawrie
Francesco Molinari
Luke Donald
Lee Westwood
Peter Hanson
Martin Kaymer
Sergio Garcia

Looking for wildcards:

Ian Poulter
Padraig Harrington
Nicolas Colsaerts

United States

Tiger Woods
Bubba Watson
Jason Dufner
Webb Simpson
Zach Johnson
Matt Kuchar
Phil Mickelson
Hunter Mahan

Looking for wildcards:

Keegan Bradley
Rickie Fowler
Brandt Snedeker
Dustin Johnson
Steve Stricker
Jim Furyk
Bill Haas
Nick Watney

Looks like the US are going to have an absurdly deep team with no real weak links.  Question marks over a couple of the Euro players though...also was surprised how few viable options there are for Olazabal's captain picks, unless I have missed someone?

Thomas Bjorn maybe and wouldn't be surprised if Olesen gets a pick, Fowler did fairly good at Celtic Manor. On another matter, are you sure you should be starting threads KR? Have a look what happened last time! Laugh

Prefer Olesen to Poulter
Report maggot August 3, 2012 3:16 PM BST
Poults has to be in the side, IMO.

Hugely experienced, and one of the very best out there when it comes to matchplay.
Report Knight Rider August 3, 2012 3:19 PM BST
Poulter 8-3-0, surely he's the first name on the teamsheet if he doesn't qualify?  Especially away from home, not the time to experiment with rookies?
Report dessys August 3, 2012 4:37 PM BST
Freddie Jacobson should be up there for a pick. But yes, as much as it pains me to say it, Poulter should probably get a pick on ryder cup form. Colsearts ahead of harrignton for me too

Getting interesting .  When do we draw the line in Europe ?
Report Knight Rider August 3, 2012 7:49 PM BST
After Gleneagles which is two weeks after the PGA, although there is no tournament the prior week so basically they have the WGC, the PGA then Gleneagles to improve their standing.

Who would your money be on Knight Rider?

i would be happy with that team. Garcia just sneaking in but class in RC. Poulter will be a pick. Harrington prob shade it due to experience. Colsaerts and Bjorn next best. Olly and Bjorn get on well, if he has a good few weeks he maybe the leftfield choice
Report Mighty Whites 2008 August 3, 2012 10:44 PM BST
garcia wasnt class when anthony kim took him apart 4 years ago set the tone for that sunday
Report mintymonster1 August 3, 2012 10:50 PM BST
not good last rc he played. Before that class.

Not sure at the moment.  It will either be USA or no bet.  Last time I laid Europe for a very large sum which obviously I lost, but only by half a point.  Made it all back on the individual matches though (by selectively opposing Europe).

This time USA look stronger, and Europe look weaker, and USA have home advantage of course.  Hadn't really looked at the market until today, thought USA would be a big bet but then I didn't think they would be odds-on.  Still tempted though.  Will look at it properly when the market forms on the week of the event.  Current liquidity is meaningless really.

The 2 wild cards i'd liked to see picked(and i know one of them will never happen)are Ian Poulter and Bernd Wiesberger.Poulter is different class in an event like The Ryder Cup and Wiesberger in his 2 wins has shown how you put an event to bed in the last round.I know Wiesbergers 2 wins were in lower grade events but it was just the manner of them.He currently sits sandwiched between Harrington and Laird in the world points list,so he's no mug.

Just checked the updated standings after the WGC.  Keegan Bradley has rocketed up into 4th place after his win so he's a lock.  Mickelson is most in danger of slipping out in the final week.  Would leave an interesting dilemma for DL3 if Mickelson, in poor form and with his poor RC record, misses out on a place.  Knowing PM would not be surprised if he privately tells DL3 to leave him out so he can spend time with the family.

As things stand Mahan, Stricker, Furyk, Fowler and DJ are all fighting for 4 captain's picks (hard to see the likes of Snedeker/Watney/Haas getting a pick now unless they really impress this week).

Euro team is unchanged.
Report Mighty Whites 2008 August 7, 2012 4:47 PM BST
Id be amazed if Phil didn't get a pick if needed. As you say there is always the possibility he may opt out but this could well be his last ryder cup so id expect him to play.

The US have 4 picks. It will almost certainly be 4 from the 5 you have suggested unless someone bags a win this week. I suspect it will probably come down to Furyk or Fowler.

The US side does look very strong.
Report Knight Rider August 7, 2012 8:53 PM BST
One objective way of rating the teams is by looking at this week's PGA odds:

Woods 11
D Johnson 26
Dufner 32
Watson 36
Kuchar 42
Stricker 42
Bradley 44
Simpson 48
Mickelson 50
Mahan 55
Fowler 55
Z Johnson 55

(could substitute Furyk 65 for Fowler, Mahan, Stricker or DJ)

McIlroy 20
Donald 22
Westwood 30
Rose 38
McDowell 44
Colsaerts 70
Garcia 90
Kaymer 100
Molinari 110
Poulter 120
Hanson 220
Lawrie 250

(could substitute Harrington 50 for either Colsaerts or Poulter).

Top 5 are close but USA look miles better on the rest.  Obviously Europe have historically played 'above themselves' in Ryder Cups so that will be a leveler.  But on paper USA much the stronger team, and they are at home.
Report Puggy4 August 7, 2012 8:58 PM BST
Kaymer & Garcia in poor form and weak links for Europe.
Report Mighty Whites 2008 August 7, 2012 9:03 PM BST
Westwood and Rory are hardly in the form of their life.

Really feel the USA will thump Europe this time around and the Odds to back them in my view is value..Rory,Hanson,Garcia,Moli,and Lawrie are not going to put the fear into any of the USA's team...The Picks for Europe will be Poulter and Colsaerts ....but if you cast your minds back 2 years when the likes of Rose and Casey who at the time were both playing well, and got left out... then you start to understand how much weaker this years Euro side is..This should be a steering Job for the USA...if Micko doesn't make it their team will be even better without him....He really looks like he could do with sometime away from the game...

Sergio in now.

Surprised Kaymer isn't playing this week. Left the door wide open for someone to pass him.
Report Manmouse August 21, 2012 11:19 AM BST
I would imagine Kaymer wants to be passed at this stage.

Three time Major champion Harrington started the year World ranked 90
now he is world ranked 61

2012
Masters 8th
Players 19th
US open 4th
Irish open 7th
The Open 39th
PGA 18th

I would say that he is "in form"

here is the reason he won't make the team

Can anybody tell me if the ranking points from the Barclays count for the Ryder cup qualification
Report Knight Rider August 23, 2012 2:37 PM BST
No they don't.  The equation is very simple now, if Colsaerts wins or finishes T2nd with no more than one other player, he gets in ahead of Kaymer.  JMO would then have to choose from Kaymer, Poulter and Harrington for Wildcards.  If Colsaerts fails to qualify then it's Colsaerts, Poulter or Harrington.
