Nice bit of writing! Scott could win a major if he finds himself in a position like Els i.e. not thinking he has a chance of winning playing without any pressure finishing well before leader(s) who then mess up and hand it to him. Otherwise very unlikely!

Like you Boltz , not a big fan of the choker stuff . Last Sunday though did show up flaws in Scotts psyche , 4 up with 4 to play is not exactly maximum pressure when your swing is working , which his was . Earlier this year I wondered on here where Scott was , he did not play for a good while around the turn of the year . One of the Aussie guys verified he had tonsil operation , which accounted for his absence , and I noted it accordingly , thinking we wmight see some change when he came back fighting fit . He played by far the best golf out there in the Open , for 68 holes , should have hacked up .
But he didn't , which will affect him more than any of us . Norman is a big mentor for Scott according to reportage , both are among the best drivers of a golf ball we have seen regularly . If Adam aspires to and comes anywhere near Gregs record , he will have done OZ proud , but I dont think he is mentally as tough as Greg . Time only will be the decider though . Ernie was on Adams side post play , all golfers know when they get a gift from the gods , well though Ernie played , and Ernie is a class act , always was , so its not as hard to take as when an "unknown " pips you at the post . Pick up the pieces Adam , have another long look at the putting thing , reckon they will ban some of the putters currently out there , although in my memory and in my top 10 of all time , Ernie would be the only one who employed a non standard putter for any length of time . Desperation obviously for him at the time , and sanguine enough to admit he thought it "shady" , but within current rules . Not a fan of any pendulum putting style myself , but if it works and its officially legal no one can complain , except to those who write the rules , some of which need examination , ref bunkers floating in water . |

Seems like a nice lad & was genuinely sorry for him, to good not to win a major but hate those long putters.

if he learns from it then there will be another chance
ernie must have been 500/1 too shoot 32 on the back nine iron off 16 wood off 18 is questionable baker finch made a worse job at st andrews and came back to win an open, hope scott does too |

Not sure he'll win an Open, never really thought his game suited. One of the US majors I can see him winning without doubt.

That putt on the 16th was hardly 3ft,not 5ft for sure!
I don't think it was a choke, more poor decisions, worst being on 18th,either take driver or iron,3 wood brought all the trouble into play.On previous hole he tried to hold up an iron into the breeze and wasn't that far out to be fair. Lets hope he has a look at what kyle stanley did earlier in the year and blows the field away in the PGA! |

Think someone made a great point earlier re: McIlroy, whose collapse was far more spectacular. Would have no qualms whatsoever about backing Scott for the PGA or other subsequent majors.

And before the PGA, we have Firestone where he won last year. Picks for that look extremely easy right now, Scott and Woods. Can't go too far wrong IMO.

Was never really a big fan of Scott for no real reason (too good looking and talented maybe!) but massive respect for him and the way he handled all that happened him.No way i could have been so restrained when that brain-dead bimbo suggested that the 3 boogies in a row didnt help
![]() Good luck to him in future really hope he grabs a big one. |

He wont win a major.
Would be interesting to see what price you would get on him to win a any major before he retires?. Seems a very nice lad and he will be enjoying a great life. Obviously dont know him, but he seems a bit soft. He did very little wrong (small errors, didn't seem to be playing to win, rather playing not to lose imo) on those last 4 holes bar the drive at the last when his brain had gone. One would have thought that would have been the time when that mug Williams would have been forceful. |

All day on Sunday you just felt Adam would find a way to put pressure on himself and i really felt for him as he comes across as a really decent guy.Given how superior his play was that week,he should have won the Open by at least 5 shots, imo. As others have said,he's certainy not the strongest mentally and you felt at times that Stevie Williams was bossing him not the other way 'round.
He's a supremely gifted player who'll probably have at least one more decent chance at a major but i have serious reservations about his will to go through with it. However,he's a good looking guy with millions in the bank......i'll sure he'll get by ![]() |

His finish has got all the attention but as has been stated earlier they weren't easy holes and fine margins can lead to bogeys. Early on the back nine he had a number of good chances which he kept leaving short - always a sign someone is getting defensive. As clarkey says above this invited pressure.

1. I would not want to be backing him next week....McIlroy had two months to get over it, he will have had 11 days - big difference.
2. He needs to compete more often - I know he says he does n't, but more tournaments means more in the mix on back 9 on Sunday, means learns more about himself and how to deal with it. 3. He's likely to take some time to adjust if they ban the long putter - psychologically at least. |
