Joke winners or players ten years passed their best   - may as well put everyones name in a hat and draw the winner out.  Very little skill involved irons off the tee for most players. It's all in the luck of the draw to see who gets the best weather wins.

Els  - 10 years passed best
Clarke  - joke
Cink  - passed his best
Curtis - Joke
Hamilton  - Joke

Case closed,  make Sawgrass a Major and make the Open the British Open on comparison with Scottish Open

Yeah, fair point. Sawgrass throws-up top class winners, year in, year out, doesn't it?

With the likes of: Ames, Mudd, Clark, Funk, Sutton & Perks all being household names, hey?

Gravy is a simpleton of the very highest order!

So Ames and Funk in the last 10 years then, the rest of the list reads like a who's who of world golf

Sawgrass has got the best hole in golf fact, the Open has nothing it just creates negative play and the rest is down to the elements.
This is only my opinion Ronsk dont need to throw insults around or is that the only way you can express yourself.

This has got to be the worse and ignorant thread ever in the history of golf forum.

Very little skill involved irons off the tee for most players.

Link golf IS all about skills and course management......not wide flat fairways like in the USA.....most golfers simply lack true skills hence why many finishes par or worse.....Typical pga events has 3 skills.....hit the ball as long as you can anywhere......chip...putt = whoever on putting form wins....simple as that.

It's all in the luck of the draw to see who gets the best weather wins.

You are joking??......the weather been the same all day every day for 4 days.

Molineri seems to disagree with the weather on his twitter account !
Tom Watson at 60 nearly wins the Open to add fuel to my fire - could be compared to Jackie Stewart winning a grand Prix
Oosthuizen won by 7 on a pitch and putt St Andrews course, do I need to go on - something has to be done otherwise i fear the top Americans will just swerve it all together

Tiger woods has won the tourny 3 times in the last 12 years. This is one of the oldest tournys in the world and every golfer states they want to win it. Also Cink nearly won the Masters the year before winning the Open, Ernie Els was 9th in the US Open just a few months back and Oosthuizen nearly won the masters this year. Clarke was an odd one but he put his heart and soul into that win and how you can call the man a joke is quite offensive.

think graveyboat is Adam Scott.  He would have won a major if it was at Sawgrass Tongue Out

Oh okay, apparently we're forgetting the last 10 years all of a suddden.  That means all The Open can offer is duffers like Faldo, Woods, Price, Norman, Duval, Els, Lehman, O'Meara...

Having been to the last 5 opens i agree with St Andrews as being a pitch and putt course.Very outadated course for todays golf and very hard to view on a few holes 2,3,4 as greens are above eye level and in middle of the course where no spectators can get near.. Best Open course....Turnberry.....fair,good viewing and very picturesque.....
The Open is still my favourite tournement of all, followed by The Masters.....I find The PGA worthless as a major and they should make Sawgarass the 4th major.

Every major throws up an unlikely winner from time to time, except The Masters where the field is so ridiculously limited.

Can't see a problem with that myself. Best golfer over four days wins the thing, as in any other tourney.

Don't forget that Andy North won two U.S. Opens, and only one other tour event.

To suggest that the greatest test of golf does not merit being called a major, is laughable. Ok, the wind didn't blow much this week, but I don't recall one single player ripping the place apart.

If you only want red hot favourites to win things, then I suggest that you stick to darts, and maybe tennis.

The PGA has been very good in recent years. Whistling Straights when Kaymer won was probably the best sunday of a major i can remember in a long time.

Im looking forward to Kiawah Island next month.

St. Andrew's has about as much chance of being taken off the Open rota as Mecca has of being delisted as a Muslim shrine.

i'd favour all the majors being restricted field events likes the masters. it just doesn't feel right when someone miles down the rankings comes out of nowhere to win a major and then usually disappears back into obscurity again

Surely the guy who scores the lowest over the 4 days proves he is the better player???? I thought that was kind of the point of golf Crazy

Suspect graveyboat is talking from his wallet.......

Whilst I dont bet on the golf myself, I can well imagine there are some very shrewd punters on here who are not afraid to back a live outsider having done the required research etc.......

As pointed out , nobody actually ripped the course apart, and indeed it wasnt that long ago that I saw an interview with Tiger Woods who stated that he had gotten a bit fed up of playing " target golf " on the US tour, and loved the challenge of our Open.

Its a fantastic tournament, and long may it stay
