I am currently in the process of designing a practice range and putting a business plan together. My idea is simple. I want to produce a small, intimate range with approximately 14 bays, with a top tier bay set further back for the longer hitters - they will drive over the lower bay. Both bays would be built into the slope and made of sustainable materials. Top quality matts, automatic ball dispensers, proper golf balls etc etc. I want to design a range that replicates a golf hole(s) on the course - include fairways, undulating greens with changing pin positions with exact yardages for customers. I will include hazards.
Every golfer needs to practice, but I never enjoy going to a range where you thump cheap balls down a field repeatedly. All the ranges near me are like this and I never really learn distances or practice shots as I get bored. I know there are amazing ranges across the country, including TOP Golf, but not near me. I hope this will allow golfers to actually practice different types of shots and actually learn club distances and make practice enjoyable and beneficial. Anyway, I hoped you could respond with some answers...your help is v.much appreciated:
1. Out of every 100 population, how many people do you think play golf, or would visit a practice range on occasion for fun? 2. What is the most important thing to include in a practice range? 3. How often do you play golf, and how many times do you visit a range? 4. Would you use a putting/chipping area at a practice range? 5. Do you prefer to practice off grass or astro turf? 6. How far would you be willing to travel to practice?
Many thanks everyone, thanks for reading if nothing else!!
1. Tough to know, maybe 10-15. 2. You seem to have identified most in your introduction. Decent quality balls and accurate distances to targets are a must. 3. Play 2-3 times per week; driving range perhaps every 2 weeks. Tend to practice at club but it doesn't have a particularly large practice area, so if there was a better driving range locally I would be more likely to practice there. Unfortunately the only range local to me is pretty sh1t. 4. Probably not, club facilities are fine for this. 5. Grass. 6. Probably no further than 15 miles.
Good luck, I like the sound of your proposal!
