Out , I backed HARRINGTON top 5, he tied 8th, so I
divided my returns by 8 and then took the resultant figure
as 5/8, but my actual returned figure is less than I had expected?

you backed him top 5..but he finished 8th?..you get nowt pal.
Report bazzar June 18, 2012 6:23 AM BST
He finished TIED 8th, because the winner was one over, the two tied third were 2 over
and the next 5 were 3 over, hence he was judged to have finished in the top 5, but like a dead heat his odds were reduced, I am asking how the returns are worked out in that instance!!!!!!

I have been paid, but less than expected.

he finished 4th but but dead heat rules apply

if you backed with ew terms of 5 places, you will get 2/5 of place profit because the top three all fully came in the top 5 and will have paid out fully, whilst harrington and the others have to share the other 2 bookies' place spots (ie. 4th and 5th = 2 remaining spots, between 5 of them).   effectively 2/5 of your place bet won and 3/5 lost.

if you backed with 6 places then half (3/6) of your place bet will have won and half lost

Not correct regarding firms paying 6 places - you get 3/5ths of the full place return, not 3/6ths or half.

Gileo1 is correct,Betfair should pay you 2/5 ths of your stake to the odds,as the 1st 3 places were covered and 5 shared the next spot

Although they may describe the calculation in another way, that is basically what you should get.

Yes, P Haigh is correct in case of 6 places, where thered be 3 places to split between the 5 T4= players; a slip on my part!
Report sandsave June 18, 2012 2:12 PM BST
Precisely why I dont bet each way. Nearly always a nightmare with diluted returns which are hard to calculate!
Report bazzar June 18, 2012 7:10 PM BST
The bet was with Betfair and as you know win bets and place bets are separate, my win bet was much smaller staked than the place bet, but since the place bet came up I just wanted to know how to work out the place for future reference, of the fifth placed there were 8 players involved, I would have been worse off if I had backed for ten places because there were 14 involved.
