Been the best player in the world for over 12 months, completely dominant last year when doing the unthinkable and topping both money lists. Almost went without acclaim, can you imagine the accolades had Woods ot Mcilroy achieved this?

Going along with his game is a graceful individual who carries himself immaculately as all times.

Absolutely outstanding player who deserves more respect

Completely dominant in winning zero majors ?
How many times did Tiger do this unthinkable thing but because he played to few events did not qualify ?
Report Eddie the eagle • March 19, 2012 8:43 AM GMT
frames, I think Tiger did it 5 or 6 times.....
Report Aussie Driver • March 19, 2012 8:44 AM GMT
Tiger is the greatest of all time.

He aside it has never been done.

You can down play it all you like but if Luke was not the dominant player of the year there is no way he could have 'won' both tours. That, in itself, is truly dominant
Report Eddie the eagle • March 19, 2012 8:49 AM GMT
AD, I think very highly of Luke, but with the majors and lately all the WGC events counting on both tours, I think we will see someone topping both money lists on a regular basis in the future.
Report Aussie Driver • March 19, 2012 8:54 AM GMT
It's a good point Eddie and certainly it won't be a once in a lifetime thing that's for sure, I am not sure I would describe it as a likely "regular" occurence though.

I guess the point is no other player in the world topped one, while Luke topped two. I find it hard to ascertain how is he is not rated higher by most on that basis
Report the stunning • March 19, 2012 9:34 AM GMT
One reason is that he just isn't "flash" enough for people. He is every bit as good as phil around the greens, but where phil hit's his 60 degree wedge, luke plays a chip and run with an 8 iron with the same result.I think he has the game to win the masters with that short game, length there is overrated.Class performer.
Report Kelly • March 19, 2012 11:25 AM GMT
Long been an admirer of Lukes . Only thing that seemed to be keeping him back over the years was a bit of a lack of "divil" . Think he has overcome that now , although he needs to seal his prominence with a major or a series of good performances in the majors .

Seems to be more appreciated outside his own country than by his fellow countrymen ( judging by observation and voting on BBCSPOY ) .  I find that strange , particularly as he is an excellent role model for younger players / people . Good that he has regained No 1 , should make for some good sport over the next year , assuming the "lead " changes a few times .

Luke has my respect.......solid behaviour like a proper gentleman......came back from a wrist injury to dominate last year and just regained his number 1 spot dislodging arrogant Rory......all he needs now is to win a major.....preferably The Opens

Donald has a brilliant short game no doubt. But i would not cross the road to watch someone pitch and putt. Golf for most people is about the long game which is why people like watching tiger and now mcilroy as opposed to boring luke. Sorry but thats the way its going to stay.
Report maggot • March 19, 2012 2:08 PM GMT
An excellent choice of name. No doubt that you are one of the many that use the whole bucket of balls to see if you can hit the back fence.
Report whataloadofbollocks • March 19, 2012 2:22 PM GMT
OK then if i am wrong could you explain why he doesn't get more respect?
Report maggot • March 19, 2012 2:27 PM GMT
I would argue that Luke is the most respected player out there. Don't get fooled by the clowns on here who love to knock him, just because he hasn't won a major.
Report rolo2 • March 19, 2012 2:28 PM GMT
if you're not a golfer and watch someone like rory play you will think wow golf is a hard game but this guy is so good. if you watch luke you think what a píss easy sport this golf this, i could do that.

luke just makes it look so easy. briliant player and seems like a genuine nice guy

Great achievement to become No.1 no doubt.A look at the list of past World No.1's and only two are without a major.I would rate Luke ahead of only Lehman on the list.
I remember his best chance of winning a major ,2006 PGA and tied for the lead going in to Sunday. How strange when paired with Tiger he chose to wear red, maybe it made no difference but I doubt it.
Report xmoneyx • March 19, 2012 3:09 PM GMT
i like lukes temperment

only 5ft 9(thought he was taller)(11 stone 5)same height as tom watson but a stone lighter.

100 weeks in top 10

age--luke is 34-----tom watson started winning majors at 28

luke has to win majors over next 3 years or h will be another monty
Report maggot • March 19, 2012 3:17 PM GMT
frames. Luke has improved somewhat since 2006. If you rate David Duval above him, then that's your opinion. Personally I rate him above Westwood, and Kaymer. I really can't see Luke being at all bothered about what colour shirt he, or his opponents are wearing.
Report ericthecat • March 19, 2012 3:30 PM GMT
I agree that Luke has the best short game in the world and looks more and more comfortable when in contention (a huge asset) but he will never go down as one of the greats because his long game is ordinary. He may sneak 1 major but I doubt it and think The Masters is his best shot.

Maggot, what ever you think about Duval, for 12 months or so he was unquestionably the best in the world, with some of the best approach play you will ever see.
Report maggot • March 19, 2012 3:36 PM GMT
I don't disagree, Eric. Duval was a wonderful player, just not as good as Luke, in my opinion.

Yes, money. I would agree that those 3 players are, or have been better than Luke will probably ever be. Length off the tee is one of the less intersting stats for me, even though Luke is also not the most accurate (which I do consider to be vital). Last year, at the important end of the hole, Luke was number 1, and the all important stat of scoring average, guess where he ended up ?
Report xmoneyx • March 19, 2012 3:49 PM GMT
where?
Report maggot • March 19, 2012 3:51 PM GMT
??? Number 1, of course.

ranked 1st putting pga tour

but greens in regulation 114th

he could be chipping onto green alot
Report maggot • March 19, 2012 4:19 PM GMT
Greens in reg, he was 41st with 67.33%. You can't really consider this years stats yet. He's only played 4, and one of those was the matchplay.

I think donalds long game will stop him winning a major cos of the way most major courses are set up, but its speaks volumes for his short game that it has escalated him so high, I would put it significantly ahead of anyone else, including Mickelson
Report frames • March 19, 2012 8:28 PM GMT
Fair enough Maggot ,it's all opinions as you say.I rate Duval an absolute country mile in front of Luke.
Report frames • March 19, 2012 8:50 PM GMT
Just having a look at the past No.1's ,only been 16 since the rankings were started and Luke is 7th on the list with 41 weeks.Another 4 weeks and he will go ahead of Nick Price in to 6th.Mickelson never made it to No.1 for the obvious reason ,hard not to rate him a better player than most on the list.
Ernie only managed 9 weeks ,the Tiger factor again.

What would be the odds for Rory to become the 3rd on the list (needs 98 weeks)? I'm expecting a huge price from AD.
Report Kelly • March 19, 2012 10:13 PM GMT
Rory is odds on to be world No 1 at end of 2012 .  Not sure why that is given Luke is now back at the top . Think it could be back and fro between them  , not to mention Lee and any others who have a good run .

Report greelo • March 19, 2012 11:33 PM GMT
incredible stuff from donald, particularly in an era of golf where the power game is becoming dominant, i'm full of admiration for the guy and his achievements

having said that

the best player in the world is rory mcilroy and if he ever gets his long game together Grin, he will dominate the world rankings for many years to come (unless Tiger etc.)

looking at his golf stats in ratio to past performance of past winners.US an PGA are much longer set ups

or in simple terms---his ave drive is only 275 yds.
Report ericthecat • March 21, 2012 11:31 AM GMT
Luke has always struggled off the tee with length and accuracy as compared to the greats, it is only is short game (which is great) that gets him to where he is.

I do agree that Luke will struggle on the tough long courses and where he does have the advantage is where a short game is at a premium i.e Augusta. The Masters is where poor putting costs you many shots and good putting saves you many, nearly always the best putter wins at augusta
