After the successful Luke Donald express reached its destination it is time for a thread for his successor as world number 1.

Currently languishing at number 28 in the rankings but it won't be long before Tiger is back at the top of the tree.

His current ranking score 3.49 is misleading as he has only played 30 events and the score is determined by dividing by 40 events. His actual ranking should be 15th with an average of 4.66. Any how that will be soon be rectified.

Enjoy the ride as the greatest soars back to his rightful position as world number 1.

Hope he plays a lot, nothing better than reps after the last few years he's had. I think for once there is cause for optimism as the speed is there and doesn't look like an old man swing protecting his back. Short game especially chipping look a problem and difficult to know whether that is rustiness or yips that might never go away.

His game is in unbelievably good condition.

iron play last week was great esp distance control,
putting mostly very good-just the odd blip,
chipping getting better all the time
better off the tee too

The only thing I was worried about was when Tiger was asked about forthcoming plans-he said something like "back to the gym for some hard work". I hope he doesn't overdo the gym stuff.

Wonderful to see Tiger back, a true great of Sport.
Best player I've ever seen, comfortably.
My only concern from weekend was when truly under the gun, ie at 15,17 Tec, he really really hit some very very poor shots.
Clearly not fully trusting himself.

Augusta really punish him if can't address that. It did the last time he was up there .
Report Mighty Whites 2008 February 27, 2018 9:18 PM GMT
Think thats a bit harsh zaf

on 17 he birdied on saturday and hit a good shot on sunday into the heart of the green

on 15 on sunday he was firing at the pin and was a couple of yards right of the target.

Not sure what price he will go off rhino will depend who else is in the field. Bay Hill not an over popular destination. The market stayed higher than I thought it would on saturday when he was going well so think there are a few yet to be convinced.

It will be interesting to see if he plays valspar. Personally think he would benefit from a couple more starts prior to the masters.

Let's hope so,thoroughly deserves one imo.
Report Wessex August 15, 2018 2:14 PM BST
Much of the stuff in this thread is misguided.

Tiger has no points to lose from last year so has to do this over mush of a 2 year period.  He has gained the 16th best total of points in 2018, so that (not 4th) is probably the best assessment of where he currently ranks.

To get to Number 1, you have to win and keep winning tournaments - even Luke Donald did this - or have stellar non-winning performances in pretty much every major and WGC over at least a year. DJ currently has 460 points which is pretty typical (Tiger was consistently over 600 in the halcyon days of 2001-02), sole 2nd in 8 majors over a 2 year period would give you 480 points before the decrementing for all but the most recent 13 weeks, so without winning you need to do very very well very consistently.

It is great to see a fit fighting Tiger back but he has some way to go be be close to Number 1.

In January 2001 Tiger's points were 28.8 nearly three times as many as Ernie Els in second.

After he won the Us Open on one leg Tigers ranking was 20.68 Adam Scott was third with a total 5.857!

Wessex is right that he has accrued the 16th most points this year although he will get a boost from being eligible for WGC events going forwards which carry big points and limited fields.

To get back to number one it is wins and high finishes that are required but of the current bunch we are not getting the 6, 7, 8 or 9 wins in a season rather 3 or 4 so it is possible. There isn't currently a player who is consistently better than the rest 5 or 6 wins over a 2 year period with some consistent form can get you to the top.

think he will get back to world number one at some point.

he's just better than the other players, even if the overall standard has arguably gone up (some would argue otherwise) in his peak. amazing ability to strike the golf ball and seems to have this uncanny ability to hole putts from everywhere when he's on. reminds me of spieth that, although spieth doesn't hit the ball as well as tiger does.

whether he can win 18 majors, who knows. think he will have to have a year where he wins more than one to get there, that's just my view, although his good friend mark o meara won two in his early forties, so if he can tiger certainly can.

next year is huge for tiger i feel he has to build on this momentum and win another major, the scary thing for the opposition is that he will only get better

This week will be the 450th professional major championship in history.

Only four times has a player won by a dozen or more strokes. Tiger achieved the feat twice – at the 2000 U.S. Open (where he won by 15) and the 1997 Masters (where he won by 12).
The other two to achieve this were Old Tom Morris at the 1862 Open Championship and his son, Tom Morris Junior, eight years later. Not to disparage two legends of the sport, but in both instances when the Morrises won the course was only 12 holes long, and there were fewer than 20 players in the field.

Living legend! Congrats on No.82 @TigerWoods!” tweeted Tony Finau as reactions poured in.
The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas, where Woods got his first win in 1996, also tweeted congratulations, as did Jack Nicklaus and Condoleezza Rice.

“Just a crazy number,” Gary Woodland, who played with Woods the last two rounds, said of his 82nd victory. “You look at the guys that have won 10 times and it’s pretty special.”
Snead was 52 when he won for the 82nd time; Woods is 43. He converted a 54-hole lead or co-lead into a win for the 55th time in 59 chances, including his last nine.

It is tempting to look ahead. Vijay Singh won 22 times in his 40s, Kenny Perry 11, Steve Stricker nine. What if Woods, who now has three victories in his 40s, is just getting going again?

From 2014 through 2017, Woods often couldn’t even swing a club. Captain Woods will lead the US Presidents Cup Team at Royal Melbourne, 12-15 Dec. and is expected to be the first playing captain since Hale Irwin in ’94. Woods will turn 44 in two months (30th Dec).
Making his first competitive appearance since a minor knee operation in August, he said his recovery is right on schedule. Any question marks were answered with scores of 64-64-66-67 at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP, keeping a world-class field at arm’s length in Japan amid a typhoon and 10 inches of rain - the seventh different country in which he has won. (The others: America, England, Scotland, Spain, Canada and Ireland.)

“To battle through the injuries he’s dealt with (spinal fusion surgery) – gosh, he’s young and he’s playing unbelievable,” Woodland said. “The ball striking exhibition I’ve seen the last two days is a joke.” Added Woods: “I didn’t really know that I would come back and play at this level.”

When will he break the record with No. 83? That depends on when he plays next – the Farmers Insurance Open is a good bet – and whether and for how long he stays healthy.
Bay Hill? Torrey Pines? The Masters in 2020 would be my fav and also tie Jack's six green jackets record (12's to 10's in recent days).
If his career longevity mirrors Snead’s, then watch out. “As far as playing until 52, I hope that’s the case,” Woods said. “If you would have asked me a few years ago, I would have given you a different answer, but certainly the future looks brighter than it has, and hopefully I can be as consistent as he was well into my 40s and early 50s.” Three wins in the last 13 months are an awfully good start. Wyndham Championship is a professional golf tournament in North Carolina on the PGA Tour. It is played annually in Greensboro, and was originally the "Greater Greensboro Open."
Less than two months shy of age 53, Sam Snead set PGA Tour records in 1965 for his eighth win at an event, and as the oldest winner of a tournament - both records still stand.
