can anyone who's done this answer why?

why lay a bet on someone like Will Stevens to be F1 world champ at odds of 1000/1
betfair min sake is £2.00 so someone is willing to tie up £2000 for nearly 10 months
to win £2.00  Although this is a gambling cert, you would get more money in interest
in the bank.
Different matter if its a bet that settled in hours or days, but 10 months.

He may have no money tied up at all, probably will have laid the whole field to lose 2k and will do it over and over again through the season.

It's not a cert but it is poor value at 1000, trebor is right, you can lay the field, you'd be surprised how much trades at 1000 even when it is mathematically impossible for drivers to win.

Oh, and please tell me where I can get 1% on 2k over 9 months

What trebor said.  Once you've laid the reasonable runners in the field to decent stakes the few quid @ 1000 on the rags comes for free.
