The law is now official.

A turnover tax between 8 and 16% for traditional bookmakers and a 15% tax for exchange markets, like in the UK. And a tax between 15% and 30% for online gambling.

Is Betfair going to remain in Portugal after the end of June?

A turnover tax between 8 and 16% for traditional bookmakers  That can't be right?  The betting exchanges will slaughter traditional books

As far as I know:

1) Unlike Spain or Italy markets for poker and exchange are open;

2) Yes, that's right, a turnover tax for bookmakers;

3) In play betting allowed.

No we are waiting for July for the final rules. I guess that our law will be one of the best european laws...

Seems like Governments in Europe are ruining the gambling industry with high tax and regulation.

The UK would be fine if the Gambling Commission actually had any interest in protecting punters from unfair practices.

I think gambling addicts give the industry a bad name. People need to take responsibility of their actions instead of blaming the industry for letting them blow all their cash. When this happens the government get support to charge the industry higher tax to make it look they there cracking down on the problem. With higher tax for bookmakers to pay they just past this charge onto their customers with higher margins.

poker is ringfenced.

not sure about exchanges in spain though.
none are signed up yet i think because the details havent been finalised.....they were going over them to see what will work.

obviously if they only allow spanish to bet v spanish then no operator will want to buy a license.....

poker has slumped....i think they pay 9% more in buy in fees
sports betting has picked up a bit.although i think one major one has said its pulling out.

its early days in these newly regulated countries and they will learn as they go along....
