One of the biggest con tricks of the last 10 years has been the selling of IR to punters. This has been done by Betfair for sure. You only have to listen to pundits when they appeared on Betfair radio. Every race seems to be littered with what it was IR or how this horse looks a good back to lay etc. When they appear on other media its never mentioned. The bookmaking industry love the pushing of IR plays because they can offer a new breed of ridiculously bad bets to unknowlegable punters. Hence you now have the cash out bet which is mug bet if ever there was one. This all ignores the other fact which is that you are up against on course players who are ahead of you in time. This is why the IR market is extremely efficient as anyone who has studied the data will know.

pretty ridiculous. being able to bet IR on an exchange is the biggest innovation ever in gambling
also there are no efficient markets. this is just a concept to allow the majority who is of course unable to beat ANY market to feel a little better

OK you back a horse to win and then place an offer to lay in running at price - x. Now someone explain to me please how you stop loss the above transaction

Search under courtsiders tennis for more information, but it applies to any sport offered in-running where there are rapid shifts in odds, the horse that falls, the whip comes out on a known non-responder, the interception return, the ball going for six magnificently caught one step inside the boundary, to give some examples
These chaps are knowingly breaking the rules of the game for monetary advantage, which is a fair definition of cheating. Betfair don't want you to know too much about them as they have been allowing them to operate here profiting from newcomers who aren't wise to what's happening, even though Betfair's own rules are being broken.
So to summarise the answer to the OP: betfair and the coutsiders are making the money. Enough for one firm ( Sporting Data ) to send 6 operatives all round the world on 40K GBP annual wages, plus expenses, plus profit for their masters back in London.
This post will likely be deleted from here in the time it takes to play a tennis match

Anyone who thinks people at the track have such a great advantage should go and try it themselves. You will most likely end up licking your wounds. You're up against people with tablets, phone callers and you will have huge expenses.
Knowledge and experience are just as important as picture speed.
Long live in-running, it's just a shame it isn't promoted better/more education for newcomers.
