It will limp and linger on till December 2015 imo before the closure renouncement
Every advert you see on tv is for the sportsbook. Come to the sportsbook it's like playing where's wally looking for the exchange, they've gone from a mantra of WE WELCOME WINNERS, to WE WANT LOSERS betting on rubbish odds, I refuse to believe the money from the sportsbook is supplementing the Exchange as you are limited very quickly to peanuts, it constantly has reliability issues whilst the sportsbook never does (FUNNY THAT), and even it were genuine then they clearly have not put enough money into using reliable software and preventing the same old bugs occurring, no other gambling site has such constant breakdowns at peak time
Exchange advertising decline + fewer newbies + PC rebels = liquidity fall and eventual closure.
FLOTATION and being a wh0re to shareholders instead of keeping a risk free profit machine has lead to a sad demise of a once great product you were proud to promote for free.
this one, the others have fairer commissions structures, for now, albeit less liquidity that would increase if this folded, let's face THEY JUST DON'T CARE, all the money is being pumped into the sportsbook, they have pulled out of many countries, and the ones in which they remain, they have increased commission up to 7.5% in some places. the big events have okayish liquidity, majors / slams / world cups, but side markets have died esp in tennis.

The problem for the overall 'exchange' model is that it's more a case of people on Betfair dying off and leaving. For the most part, those people aren't disappearing to Duck or anywhere else. They're just dropping out of the market.
When Betfair's exchange finally keels over (through neglect and the self-eviscerating PC), there'll be very few people left to go straight over to an alternative.

there are markets on here which have long term end dates (e.g. the 2020 general election) so it doesn't look as if they're thinking of closing it any time soon - unless it's all a smokescreen!

the exchange principle won't end . Not in the turf accountants interests.
if this one does go another one will take it's place .
But i believe THIS exchange is still a very good exchange to use albeit a very expensive one.
Any other exchange may well just be badly thought out ,planned etc similar to most government web sites you see these days ,or even the Daq. It would be like closing down M and S ,Debenhams and Sainsburys etc and getting a huge array of pound shops . Not always good.
Be careful what you wish for .

You mean like the 'new' site.
On the internet it is easy to replicate any site. You simply copy what you can see. I was sent a beta of the new site and it was remarkable how many issues there were that resulted from not copying what the old site got right. I can only assume there is no one left at bf who understands the exchange and how people use it. (as noted below)

That's been the exchange's main problem; those who came up with the site didn't have a clue how its customers used the site, nor how different types of players used the site. The site, and the new API, are more Betfair's ideas pushed on to its customers, rather than what customers wanted.

tell you what though - it's been pretty awful this week getting bets matched compared with last month . And any site that doesn't have players or liquidity is a poor site regardless .
It's like somebody diverts the flow from the stream into the Reservior (Sportsbook in this case ? ) and then it gets turned back on again

...had a look on some of the side markets this weekend , namely CORRECT SCORE 2 which was a hive of activity 2 years ago .
During the busy Premier league fixtures this weekend i duly noted a total of ZERO players and occasional bot jumping erratically .
Didn't realise it had gotten this bad.
The side markets are in a deep sleep .
