Fair trade, after all they take your money but if you win they get rid of you, its not in the spirit of things, should they by law be allowed to operate such practises.

no,but they do,,,,,,they want mug punters they monitor all accounts
Report mikenz February 21, 2014 9:05 AM GMT
perhaps the word mug may be appropriate aye.
Report loper February 21, 2014 1:02 PM GMT
The punter is the worst protected customer on the high street.

There is an Office of Fair Trading for all other forms of high street commercial activity. But bookmakers have a license to abuse their customers at will.
Report iprefertolay February 21, 2014 4:38 PM GMT
A way to get back at the bookies is take them for mugs.
Open a new account with one, take their free offer and arb it.
Then move on to the next one, until you have used them all.
In time you will get accounts closed or restricted, but you will have won a fair amount.
Also its the only way I know of as a sure fire way of winning.
Report RichardHughes February 23, 2014 11:55 AM GMT
Bookmakers don't close winning accounts. They only close arbs and people who only take top price. If you do all your betting with 1 bookmaker and make profit year in year out then they will not close your account.

what r u on rickyy

For the record Richard bookies close accounts for the following reasons >
Firstly if the account is not economically viable for them (winning for customer)
Secondly, if they know you arb.
Thirdly, always taking top price, which alerts them you arb.

Richard why would bookies want winning accounts? think about it for god sake.

Thank you zealot and logroller, yes ricky is a mong.

Think all bookmakers must use the same standard letter when closing accounts. I have about 30 closed on me in the past 18 months and every closed account gives the reason as my account not being viable in pretty much the exact same wording. Only once has arbing ever been mentioned as a reason but that was when I spoke to someone in customer chat when I contacted them just to see what they would say.

I dint what Richard said on this thread which is so wrong. He clearly stated that if it was clear that a customer was not arbing and always taking best prices a winning account would not automatically be closed. I have had more than one account closed when I was behind with a particular firm as it would have been clear I was always taking best prices.

I would be interested to know from someone with knowledge what kind of software bookmakers have to flag up accounts they look at closer.
Report paddletoe February 24, 2014 9:41 AM GMT
As faor bookmakers not liking arbers I don't think its so much that an arbing situation means that a bookmakers is always wrong with their prices. In every arb there must be an over round book with two or more bookmakes. Sometimes two bookamkers can each be a little over priced in their odds but sometimes only one bookmaker is wrong and a punter needs to take the worst of it with one bookmaker in order to place an arb bet. When one bookmaker is correct with their odds but they still think you are arbing the real reason they are closing your account is not because they are losing on on a particular bet but rather because they know arbers are not the kind of customers who they can make money from long term.

FFS! You can fool some of the people some of the time................

The myth that has been created by bookmakers that it is arbers that they shut down because they are somehow doing something underhand and morally questionable. this has been swallowed hook line and sinker by a huge majority who actually sympathise with this ruthless and arbitrary tactic. Arbing in itself is a perfectly legal and morally justified act, but in reality the % of accounts closed for so called arbing that actually perform this heinous act are miniscule.

Punters have been looking for value ever since bookmakers started quoting independent prices, decades before betting exchanges came into being theoretically providing the opportunity to arb. PRICEWISE was set up as a service (supposedly for punters but in reality for bookmakers)at least 10 years before the idea of BETFAIR was conceived.

Bookmakers close accounts for daring to take a price rather than settle at SP. Arbing is the myth they hide behind and the gullable public are taken in by it and thus the myth becomes fact and the real morally questionable action, closing winning accounts, is obscured by the arbing smokescreen.

Bookmakers close accounts if the punter displays any skill, knowledge, intelligence etc.,even if he is losing. If it looks like he MIGHT win in the long term then he is closed or restricted. It's called the "mugs only policy".

I dont have a winning account (lost some thousands) with an online bookmaker but still was limited to 3-4 Euros a bet now.

Are they allowed to limit a customer who lost a big amount of money or is there something I can do against it?
Report pumphol. February 24, 2014 4:48 PM GMT
Some actually close your account others limit you to pennies or in the case of boils  max stake 0.00 & claim they have not closed you down Crazy
Report iprefertolay February 24, 2014 5:08 PM GMT
Paddletoe, what I do know is that bookies categorise customers when they ring up to place a bet.
Various lights flag up to alert the bookie on actions to take for example>

Accept all bets
Refer to trader
Restrict all bets
Restrict bets on specific sports

I know this because my son is a manager of a bookies.

ps Artie is correct they only want mugs.

Just one thing i would add to Richard Hughes claim if you do all your betting with one bookmaker then you won't get closed, how would a bookmaker know you are being faithful to him and giving him all your business

if you are taking 5/1 with him when 13/2 is widely available then its fair to say you don't shop around

toffee, if some mug is taking 5/1 when 13/2 is widely available thier thick and the bookies best friend.
Report alwaypunting February 25, 2014 7:03 AM GMT
Agreed iprefertolay , also if you are in the habit of taking 5/1 a generally available 13/2 chance you are highly unlikely to be a winning account

I would also suggest that you are a Gold Card Account holder who gets free bets and complementary tickets to Royal Ascot and the Cheltenham Festival.
