there is. its called betfair

|
By:
yomomma, do you mean an exchange owned by the people, for the people, via a decentralized peer to peer network? yep, surprised it hasn't been built yet.
|
|
By:
I also wonder about Google, Facebook and Ebay. High charges, security or privacy issues, diabolical customer service or bad publicity don't seem to make the slightest difference to some companies' popularity.

but the long odds you get on betfair put it miles ahead of the bookies

It's just a matter of time.
The exchange concept is brilliant. Betfair pioneered a revolution in betting and then decided to kill the goose. Someone else will come along eventually. I don't trust existing monsters like Ladbrokes. I think their motives are on the nose. Take over the exchange market from Betfair and then run the exchange into the ground and force people back into the outmoded 19th-20th century bookmaking model, with a perverted 21st century twist which enables them to ban winners. But the original exchange ideal still exists in the minds of idealists. Someone will come along to revive it eventually. The main problem with the smaller exchanges are just lack of liquidity. There's only one way to fix that. Migrate there in our droves. Who wants to be first? And therein lies the problem. No one wants to be first. My excuse is that the smaller exchanges don't seem to cover my particular betting interest ... U.S. horse racing. What's your excuse? |

By:
Yes they do.I can think of 3 exchanges that have US horse markets.

The problem is that the recreational punters are cemented here. The people who have moved over are mostly PC-2 payers, and these guys and girls are not willing to give up much value. I see no point in trying to seed the Purples markets at this point. It will take time and a lot of advertising world wide to get another exchange going.

I think it will take a big idea to kill off Betfair, nothing out there offers anything genuinely different and for the average punter charges are not enough of a differentiator. That said, I think there is plenty of unexplored opportunity in the P2P / social betting space. For example if you look at poker and even online video gaming (MMOs etc) competitive online gaming has never been bigger, and I think there are lot of ideas that could come in from there to the betting world- a truly social exchange which combining the excitement of betting with competitive elements could be the next big thing but as yet no exchange has moved in that direction (indeed in closing off the forum Betfair has actively moved away from it.

Although I've been mostly critical of Betfair recently (PC and lack of exchange advertising) I think an interesting development will come when sportsbook bets get directed to the exchange. Should help liquidity even though I have no idea of the mindset of somebody who would use Betfair's sportsbook.
|
|
By:
Reading some of the comments and complaints to the Betfair Twitter address last night and this morning, it's clear most punters don't understand how cash out works, so aren't going to understand the ethos of the exchange rather than sportsbook.

Gambling laws in other countries are stopping massive exchanges starting up aboard. Imagine a exchange in the far east the liquidity would be so good you would be able to get what ever you wanted on.

I was on purple horse racing last night and for the first time, betfair odds were following purple- about 5 seconds behind.

.....because the margins are not big enough.

All problems will be solved when Feckfair eventually starts up. Still a wee bit of tinkering to sort out apparently, but when it explodes onto the scene there will be less disgruntled punters on here. I should add that I can't speak for the traders, but the real punters and layers will be in clover. (IMO)

Talk in India of legalizing gambling. If it happens then could well see an exchange out of there. Also moves to legalise online betting in the USA.

"Feckfair?"

By:
Yes, Feckfair. The new exchange coming soon which is for punters and layers only. I heard through the grapevine that in-running may be allowed, but strictly no arbers, no traders, no spoof merchants and definitely no trap bets.

sounds great- I'll join if it has a pc charge but forget it otherwise
|
|
By:
No PC charge, but a small FF charge. (to cover setting up costs in case it goes pear shaped and the multi-millionare pro-punter/building contractor has to sell shares in his building firm).
|

"feckfair"
Isn't "feck" Irish for the word that we in the civilised world spell with a "U"? This has gotta be a wind-up. |

I keep waiting for purple to come good. TBH, the horse racing is very acceptable- liquidity ok- certainly the ticks are all filled by 10 mins before race time.
Football still has a way to go- just not quite there yet, but if you are laying, you can offer some outrageously bad prices and get taken in play. Obviously the hope is that Laddies will drive this forward. I would imagine they will eventually, as they are an established market player in all things gambling. A commission free peer to peer site, with the site funded by advertising, does seem logical- with global liquidity. It would be a killer site. |

Haha Stewarty, it seems a few people don't remember Feck!

Feck is still on here with a different name

Feck is a forum legend and one of the best eggs on here. I for one will be signing up if Feckfair blossoms. Having said that, I don't think he's very happy with me giving his secret desire away. ![]() I hope he bears me no grudges as apart from the Scottish independence malarkey, we get on like a house on fire when it comes to discussing horse punting and the tale of woes we have shared re: the perils of punting and how our better halves react to our screaming at the TV when a horse we've backed is still there with fifty yards to go. ![]() Feck is still on here with a different name No disrespect Coachbuster, but as they say in the US....'gee, you think'? If the sharp minds on here were so sharp, they would remember the name of the pal that Feck took with him to Perth races at the Scottish General betting drink a couple of years back. I think he took him in case Bayes came 'tooled up'. ![]() |

Talk in India of legalizing gambling. If it happens then could well see an exchange out of there. Also moves to legalise online betting in the USA. Not sure about about India tbh, in Hindu scriptures their are contradictions on the rights and wrongs of gambling but in general gambling is frowned upon, I would be surprised if they attempted to open an Exchange site esp considering what is still a fairly poor country for most living there. The US see exchanges like Betfair as a form of money laundering, would be surprised if they changed their stance. It would be great if there was someone in this country the will and means to start up an exhange to grow it to Betfair's size, for the people as it was intended, no floatation, no PC charge, just a fair commission structure. Hallelujah. |

But the Sportsbook enables you to back/lay accas involving many more football teams than the maximum 8-fold offered on the Exchange.
|
|
By:
In fact, by offering me the opportunity to extend my 'fun' accumulator bet to include more teams (and before you scoff, yes I do win regularly enough to keep me interested), it prevents me having to use other betting sites or, worse, go into a shop.
