Is this a trick question????

Pretty simple matter down here. They just walk up to a bookie and make the bet. Or if they're too busy saddling the horse up they get the stable commissioner to put the bet on. If it's a really really really big bet they might need a few people to put the money on with different bookies.

I'm not sure what the rules are concerning trainers betting with Betfair or on-line bookies.

I'm also not sure how a trainer would go about backing someone else's horse in the same race, or laying his own horse. That might require a bowler.

First they have to register as a Sole Trader.

It was a bit tongue in cheek, but mr big shot owner/trainer wants a big bet, calls mr bookie for example and says i want x amount on this,mr bookie says yeah no problem, you can have as much as you want on.End of conversation....

...or does the conversation end you can have as much as you want on...but let me know when your next hotpot is going to be turned over in a big race...or mark my card on all your other runners...

Joe punter wants to get 200 on a bet and he is told you can have 25!!!

I am just wondering what the mechanics are.

If I was a bookmaker i'd run a mile if the trainer wanted to put bets on his own horse at a certain price.

The owner would be a bit peeved if his horse had a greater possibility of success than the available odds seem to be indicating and the trainer knew this and he wasn't informed. So the owner and maybe the stable staff could be competing for prices in the morning  the likelihood is by the time of the off the horses true odds would be pretty much reflected in the starting price, when it would be probably easiest to get alot of money on

Always the chance you could get a famous front person, let's say a famous England International footballer, trying to give the perception that he is a high rolling mug, to put your bets on for you.

You could even get a national daily newspaper, printing a story that mentions in person, what a hopeless gambler this person is, to embellish  the story.

Aware of someone that works in a betting shop up north.  The trainer still likes to put bets on himself, sometimes even parking outside with the trailer on their way to a meeting.

When he does, the staff always put a bet on themselves.  If he doesn't come by, they always look at the race he has runners in, put a line through his horses and either lay it or look elsewhere in the betting.
