I have been charged 1.5% for my last 3 debit card deposits.  Tried emailing Betfair twice and they can't be bothered to respond.  Quite staggering really.

I am assuming it's a ballsup only affecting me but is anyone else having the same issue?

If you are on Twitter get in touch with @BetfairHelpdesk they are very quick at sorting problems out in my experience.

If you tweeted the right twitter address and were coherent and civil it is very very difficult to believe that you have not had a response.  @betfairHelpdesk are, in my experience, both prompt excellent.
Report maltese falcon December 13, 2013 5:01 PM GMT
Shirley knot they have not responded to any of my 3 emails or the tweet sent.  Whether you find it hard to believe or not that is the case.  And I haven't been refunded either but I am sure I will.  It is just annoying me.
Report ShirleyKnot December 13, 2013 5:03 PM GMT
What's your twitter address please MF?
Report ShirleyKnot December 13, 2013 5:32 PM GMT
Although tommy cockles has already given you the answer to your query I'm trying to help you with asking in a way to get an immediate response MF.  Wot's yer twitter address mate?
Report maltese falcon December 13, 2013 5:41 PM GMT
I appreciate your help but seeing as it's not the money, I would like to see how long it is going to take them to reply.  And then to see their reasons for their tardiness.  The thread was really to see if the problem was widespread.  thanks
Report ShirleyKnot December 13, 2013 6:49 PM GMT
No problem.  It's very puzzling that @BetfairHelpdesk respond helpfully to me and everybody else I know within minutes but you somehow not to you.

For the first time in 10 Years, I have just been charged for Depositing funds with a UK Visa Debit card,
That's a card were the Money on it is mine and Not borrowed from a bank!.

I agree with Shirley. I've found all the Betfair Twitter accounts very good. It's not a 100% success rate, though they're normally very prompt and pretty helpful.

That's a bit rich charging people for the privilege of throwing their money away
Report maltese falcon December 15, 2013 12:25 PM GMT
Shirleyknot, your insinuation that I am lying is quite frankly absurd.  I find it a bit weird that you know lots of other people who contact them.

I have received a response asking which transaction I am referring to.  I have now tried their live chat on the web as well at the address:  https://webchat.betfair.com/en/default and that doesn't work either.

0844 numbers cost 10p a minute or something like that

there used to be a standard number to ring , i seem to have lost it

i have entered a conversation this time on twitter.  They have given up with responding.  Anyone who can see the conversation will see their incompetence.

What do people make of this?

"Thank you for your e-mail.

Having looked into your account further, as you are using an English Visa Debit card overseas (Malta), you are still charged a fee of 1.5% unfortunately. It is still considered a overseas transaction while you are in Malta. If you use this card while in the UK you will not be charged 1.5%."

Why does this affect them?

I have made dozens of deposits before without charge.  Am I alone in thinking this is a disgrace?
Report sidthekid December 16, 2013 7:34 PM GMT
That would only apply if you were transacting with Maltese Money,
I am in Ukraine,i suspect that's why I am being charged, but since I am not transacting in Ukraine Hgrvyvna,it is a UK Bank card,Debit, with GBP Sterling on it,so NO 1.5% should apply!.
Report maltese falcon December 16, 2013 7:37 PM GMT
Hello Sid.  I have been told now via live chat that there is an "International Charge."  However if i switch my proxy it will all be ok.

The premium charge hasn't worked so they are having a crack at theft.
Report brendanuk1 December 17, 2013 12:58 AM GMT
so location of where you made the deposit has on effect on  the cost and just using vpn could save you the fee? bizarre if not straight sharp practice
Report maltese falcon December 17, 2013 12:32 PM GMT
Kevin G.: We have recently updated our payments pages, with this you should have been charged in the past for using a GBP debit card abroad.

That is from the live chat.
Report sidthekid December 19, 2013 12:10 PM GMT
The FSA is a toothless tiger, but a few emails to them would do No harm,
Until this 1.5% is in the terms and conditions,it should Not be charged.

A notice should be placed on the Website or a bulk email sent out stating;
"That,if you deposit funds from a UK Debit card, but the ip address on your,PC,Laptop,Mobile,i-pad,does Not show it is UK based,a 1.5% charge will be levied"

Betfair, you now owe me £5000 to be paid direct to my UK card, for this little piece of work I have done for you Wink
Report dave1357 December 20, 2013 1:44 PM GMT
It seems an odd charge.  As others have said you are not dealing in a foreign currency and I can't imagine that they are utilising a foreign payment processor.  So just seems like bubbly for the shareholders to me.

what if you were making a payment at work, which happened to be multi-national and ip was routed via their headquarters in the Duchy of Grand Fenwick Confused

Thank you for your e-mail.

Please be advised that this fee is correct.
Whilst there is no fee for deposits made from a UK debit card, there will be a fee if the card is being used abroad.
This is similar to the fee you receive when withdrawing funds from a cashpoint outside of the UK with a UK card.

The fee is taken by the merchant bank that moves the funds.

from Betfair's t and c's

Deposit and withdrawal charges

Charges relating to the deposit and withdrawal of funds to or from your Betfair account are set out in the deposit and withdrawal pages within the ‘My Account’ section on the website. However, additional charges may apply in some cases to reflect the cost incurred by Betfair as a result of processing excessive transactions.

Please note that if you become eligible to incur additional deposit and withdrawal charges, we will contact you before any charges are paid.

Presume they haven't contacted you to inform you of the change? If not, ask for a refund.
Report bilbobaggins December 21, 2013 5:19 PM GMT
Surely you could just ring them from abroad and tell them to deposit £x into your account from the debit card on the system . This will incur No Charge so what this is all about I don't know.
