Only the financial sector would consider what passes for skill on betfair skill. If betfair folded most pc payers would have to go back to mugging or charging pensioners 25K for power hosing their roof.

many skills are transferable but you won't get very far at an interview if you say you made a living trading, betting or whatever however successful you were at it unless i was interviewing you.

As I've become a world class expert on the intricacies of the Betfair charging structure, I guess I could move to a field of similar complexity and become a tax adviser.

actually, I think you do learn some useful things from this. you get experience quickly analysing situations and making decisions, you learn to tolerate risk, and you also learn to tolerate loss. and you do it without the safety net of it being someone else's money, with a guaranteed income regardless of performance. all of those things ought to be hugely valuable in most businesses.
but if you turned up at a management job interview and said all that, the only job you'd be offered would be mopping up around the interviewers.

It's not the experience that you get here that you can transfer to other industries but more the experience you have gained from other walks of life that enable you to be successful on here.
For the record I am profitable on here but by no way would i classify my self as an experienced pro.
And if I turned up for a management job interview trying to use my betfair experience I would expect to be turned away pretty sharpish. It's not really relevant experience for that type of job. I'm not knocking it, it's great experience if you go for a job as an odds compiler at a sportsbook, but not management. It's like trying to use child-minding skills to get a job in diplomatic relations.

Yeah look, it's not going to magic you a job, but in that industry it's one of the few times that gambling experience can be viewed as a positive rather than a negative.

yeah, I think coach is overly pessimistic. if he'd said next few years I'd have been more inclined to agree with him, but months?
for the record, I started in 2006 and this has been my best year.

Dave ,you should see my potato's and tomato's I failed my English O level back in the day ,but thanks for your concern
yes, the specialist sharks are being rounded up and sent packing unless they're able to cut their teeth at Football
Racing is probably a no no, at a guess.

viva ,swedebank- i will give the exchange a couple of years with the main markets in it's present guise ,but the offshoots will suffer .
and once you lose those supporting structures the building will eventually collapse .It's whether BF sees a future in the exchange ,it won't be for us to decide .
As for this lads exchange - looks a shambles

I agree. Same here. I started in 2006 and this has been my best year. Then again, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 were all my best year too at the time

When I eventually come to terms with the fact that I'll never make any decent money again on Betfair I think think I'll do what most do who can't scrape a profit...start a tipping line.

Money is the only good thing about this. During my fulltiming for 6 years i just become more lazy for every day. I also think that i will ha a very tough time to accept a boss deciding over me in a "real job" in the future.

transferred skills i learnt form other industries to betfair, wanting to know and understand completely the business you work in, spend all your time learning listening to the right people, and eventually you know what they know, if your lucky or intelligent you will know everything there is to know and you will know more than the people you learnt from in the first place.

Investor- is your risk higher ? is your liability greater ? i can believe this year may be your best year ,but the numbers of successful players are dwindling .
You may have a very strong edge which probably hasn't been explored - i think the casualties to date have fallen outside of the main football markets .
I had a useful income which made up 30% of net profits from games outside of the big leagues ,but i wouldn't take the risk on these any more.
Also consider that if you do get caught out there are no refunds of the p/c for that amount, made worse if you feel the markets are suffering and there is less chance of pulling back - robbery imo

because the volumes are higher per big player which tells me that there are a smaller number of pro players ,albeit ones who make a greater profit - possibly Investor fits that profile
as any exchange matures you will get this scenario by default - the premium charge may have helped level the playing field to a small extent but now it's having an adverse effect on smaller and medium sized pros

Yeah Coach, is almost certainly right. That was always bound to happen. Betfair is so new, and it's been like the wild west. Over the next decade, we'll see more structure and consolidation.
