Why are bots are considered illegal for use on Poker sites but not
Betfair or the Financial markets. What is the big difference?

The World Chess Champion would be a cheat if he won by using software.  The same applies to poker.  It's a game between 2 (or more) players.  Using software is cheating.

Financial markets are markets not games, so therein lies the difference

I would say bots on an exchange add liquidity (as do manual players), by which the end user benefits by way of better prices available to bet at.

Most people don't want to play poker against a bot, but they do want liquid markets on a betting exchange. The only people that will complain about bots on betfair will tend to be winners themselves (competing with bots). Whereas virtually all (non-bot) poker players will not want to play against bots unknowingly.

Here is the story in Swedish: http://www.expressen.se/nyheter/storbedrageri-pa-svenska-spels-poker/

14 people were reported to the police on suspicion of fraud. Together they had won the equivalent of 180,000 GBP in a year by using using bots on the poker site of the Swedish state bookie - Svenska Spel. (I use the term bookie loosely here. They make the Betfair sportsbook look good haha.)

Using a bot to play poker is considered cheating in itself. They had as far as I know not cheated in any other way.
