"If you just include horses that don't win and just place" - then the place markets here are going to be much better. After all, by definition, you've lost the win part of the bet on all of these horses!
In general the place odds on here are better than the place part of an e/w bet, except in bad e/w races. Things like a race with a heavy odds-on favourite, 16 runner handicaps, etc. In these cases, the traditional bookie e/w terms are much more favourable (but they won't like to take a bet!) |

Mr Magoo, 16 runner handicap place betting is usually
favourable to the punter on the shorter prices in my experience. |

If every horse in a 16 runner handicap was 15/1 with the bookmakers the
place odds would be 15/4 = 16 bets in and a payout of 19. Place odds for 16 runner races will never exceed 20%. i.e 1/5 odds, and the shorter the odds at the top end of the market will distort this figure even more. |

In some 16+ runner handicaps, this is often not
recognised. |
